Hi Fov,
Don’t worry!!! The NEF raw files which are lost during transfer process can be easily recovered only if they are not corrupted. Even I was under the same problem couple of day’s back where I lost some of my precious raw photos while transferring it to computer. Then I got to know about photo recovery software and I used it. This utility helped me to recover Nikon RAW files. So it can also be helpful in your case only if the files are lost not corrupted. Following are the details which can be useful
http://www.nikoncanonphotorecovery.com/recover-raw-images-from-nikon-d4-dslr-camera.html
Download link: http://www.nikoncanonphotorecovery.com/download/nikoncanonphotorecovery-windows.exe
All the best,

I have been having the exact same problem the last few weeks when transferring NEF files from my Nikon D800. I don't use any transfer program just simple copy/paste and a few files every time is corrupted.

Then I edit in Lightroom 4.2

Today I fortunately still had them on my SD card and tried to transfer the same two files again and re-import into LR and they were fine?!?!?

Weird

So save them on the SD card until you know they work for sure. Its a drag, but for now it works for me and I have my NEF file uncorrupted

i have also a problem with reading the nef files, not in camera but after transfer from sd to computer and also from cf to computer. Old nef files still on sd card can be read but all nef files that I make now cannot be read.
I have reset the camera, I have downloaded and installed the latest firmware for D800 (1.01) but still the NEF files are showing as corrupt.
This only happened after 2300 shots and before that time I didn't have problems at all.
Is there a solution for this already, I cannot find a definite solution in this post to this problem. Thanks in advance. Frank.

Sorry to weigh in late. The problem program here - Nikon Transfer 1.5.3 - is a stand alone program that is no longer supported and has not been updated for the D800. The issue of 1.5.3 corrupting files is a known issue - don't use it.

Nikon View NX2 has an embedded program - Nikon Transfer. There is no version number and it is only available as an embedded program.

Nikon Transfer (the embedded version) does simply transfer files, but it also can edit or add to the EXIF information. You can drag and drop files but it is a little more cumbersome if you are using renaming functions or adding EXIF information during transfer.

Once the files are corrupted, I don't think there is a way to fix them.

So you obviously don't have any back up copies anywhere then - bummer.

What about copying them to SD and using the Sandisk recovery utility?

I know this is an old thread now, but having just read through it quickly for the first time, doesn't Nikon transfer just 'copy' the files from your card to your chosen drive? How were the original NEF's on the memory card corrupted? Maybe I missed the explanation for this somewhere, but I would have thought you could just drag and drop the files from the card (not using transfer) to your computer, and them open them in your chosen editing package. What am I missing?

Hi Guys --

I was shooting with my D800 this past week and when I was downloading my card at the end of the day, I noticed that about 80 images were corrupted [and file names altered]. As they are right now they cannot be opened by LR,PS, etc.

Example File Name: DSÿ_41ÿ2.NEÿ

They are close to 50mb in size, so I feel like the data is there, however everything I have attempted has failed.

Any ideas on how I might be able to save these files?

Thanks! tk

@DutchNikon Yup, tried and double checked all these settings. Still it would simply fire away in or out of focus. Now, there are situations, during shooting when set so as to "trap focus" which does prevent a shot until the subject is in focus. But no real way to push the button, bring the subject into the frame, and have the camera fire once the subject gets into focus, unless one is using continuous servo mode. So, I asked NIKON ....

Well, NIKON tech has informed me the camera will not do that. No "trap focus". Instead the suggestion was a remote for $285. However, the discussion was only academic as I never use trap focus. Using continuous servo, nine points, the system follows what I want and there is really no need to have the trap focus. Of course if one has a remote wan wants to shoot an object which enters the field, well, I guess I am out of luck unless I rig a trigger system which utilizes infrared or other sensing device. Oh, well...

Actually, as I remember, the trap focus idea was back when we had a slower FPS, and we had a scene set up and then an object would come into the action and be captured. But with the high FPS, maybe it is not necessary.

>>or how to get the D4 to trap focus. I could not get this done as the camera would release even when the lens was out of focus<<

Just 1 remark, often overlooked : did you set up for "single Point AF" ? otherwise every fly that gets in your VOF at the edge can trigger the trap ....

apart from that, your lens needs to be on AF/M, rather than just M , since the camera still needs to use its AF cirquitry ..

Tao, Trap Focus was a pentax innovation and terminology I believe. So, you set the focus and when the (say) bird comes into focus the shutter fires. http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/pentax-dslr-camera-articles/51036-how-use-trap-focus-catch-focus.html

I called the Nikon mob that do the cashback today because I received a very confusing email which made me think there was a problem (IT problem so she said) and I got a response that was only just short of downright hostile. I also sent a technical question to support about the D7000 so we will see how long it takes for them to answer.

Having read a lot of posts on issues with the D800, trap focus, and other issues, I asked NIKON tech support as to why, or how to get the D4 to trap focus. I could not get this done as the camera would release even when the lens was out of focus, yet set to release only when "in focus". I noticed they had not answered a question asked on 4/26/12, when they state the answer will come back within 24 hours. My question of 4/26 was to the actual coverage circle of the 24mm PC Nikkor. Not too difficult and should be information readily available within NIKON.

So, I am wondering if others have asked NIKON questions and received answers or not received answers. Maybe it is frustrating to have a new camera and not get it to do what I want, but for the money spent, I would think maybe some support would be available almost instantly. Ahh well....

Let me hear from others as to the responses from NIKON. Maybe they are all in the back room trying to build cameras, ha, ha, ha.

One other thing causing trouble is blocking the SB900's filter sensor with any modifiers.

Sorry to take issue with your post Ofeqve, but Pocketwizard specifically suggest starting at the top and working down as you suggest, but powering off in reverse order. Camera-PW-Flash. This is the proceedure I follow and have never had a problem. Maybe you have?

So far my new Elinchrom D-Lite IT (400ws) units which have the Skylite radios in each unit are working great. While these of course need plugging in, if we are using off camera flash, indoors, this may not be a problem. My experience suggests the small battery operated units just do not have the power I have needed.....so.. maybe Nikon is not as excited about the new product as one might hope for. Of course, Canon may have changed all that.

On my einsteins and elinchorms they seem to work great but with the sb900's, they seem very moody. I was actually thinking of getting rid of them. It seems i make an adjustment to my camera then all the sudden ill change a setting, then a flash will stop firing. Nobody else has had problems with them?
