The awful live view screen is one of the failings of the otherwise impressive D800. I'd suggest the Zacuto EVF and Z-Finder or SmallHD DP4 or DP6 (all with focus peaking) to solve manual focus problems. I'd've gone that route myself if it wasn't for the poor high ISO low light video performance of the D800. Amazing camera otherwise.
