What would the benefit of having such a large sensor be for video? I mean besides the low light. Would you also get an incredibly shallow DOF too?

As the article states it's 100x more sensitive than a 35 mm full-frame CMOS sensor. So the pixel pitch would be 10x bigger. This is probably about a 10-12 mp chip with a ~60um pitch.

NASA? I have read that NASA commissions large image sensors for space station, satellites, and the rest. I do know that Canon has made "image capture devices" for them in the past. Not all development is for cameras that ever reach an individual's hands.

Yes there are much bigger imaging sensors in use by the military and NASA (not made by canon though) but this is the biggest CMOS. Interesting to know whether is sensor is actually a bunch of APS-C sensors connected as one? Or maybe each one of those squares is a "full-sized" pixel? Imagine one pixel from this sensor is larger than your camera's entire sensor! ;^)

Yes this could be for the worlds first digital large format camera. I'm sure motion picture studio's would also be interested in this for extreme low light video applications too.

No it's NOT the same sensor. They unveiled a 120 megapixel APS-H last week. They unveiled this sensor yesterday. It's a different sensor that is the worlds largest (physical size) CMOS sensor.

Here's the new 202 x 205mm CMOS next to a "normal" 35mm CMOS! And remember this sensor can shoot video too!

The 120 megapixel sensor canon announced last week is smaller than that 35mm CMOS on the right. If I were RED cameras I'd be very worried.

canon unveiled a 202 x 205 mm CMOS sensor! It also has the ability to record video at 60fps! Last week canon also unveiled a 120 megapixel APS-H sized sensor.

Remember those rumors of canon looking to buy/partner up with a medium format manufacturer like Pentax? And remember the "MX" medium format Nikon rumors?

Hmmm...interesting...

These new sensors will be coming to future Nikon models.
