I leave mine in 14bit. I changed it to 12 when I started shooting with it and decided to try it at 14. It didnt seem to make much difference in my computer editing time, so I left it at 14.

I cannot say I noticed a difference however I was not really looking at an image difference, just if it would make a noticeable difference in my editing time. I leave it at 14 for the same reason I leave it at 36MP.

R8R, do they have it on tape ? ;- >

You only read to page 435 huh? You do remember that as a Nikon fan, you need to read every manual cover-to-cover, even if you don't own the camera.

The Nikon D800 is no way a beginners camera and you will need top pro lenses to get best results. Invest in lenses first then upgrade your camera. The D800 is a fantastic camera and well worth the money but you will need a fast computer with plenty of storage. The D800 is not the type of camera that you can snap away taking photos of anything that moves. You have to think more when taking photographs and just shoot the images you need (i.e., who needs 300 pics of a squirrel , lol) been there, done that. Think of the type of photography you want to do, then buy the best lens you need to do the job. Just because the D800 is a top class camera, it won't give top results using cheap lenses so think before you buy. As others have said, there are new Nikon cameras to be released in 2013 so I would wait a little longer and see what is available then. Good luck with your choice. theoldnikonian

Perhaps this isn't quite kosher on NR but I accidentally ran across this wedding photographer's website and was very impressed by his creative and unusual compositions. If you scan through his site you will find lots of ideas you can try yourself. He was a sport's photographer who now shoots weddings, perhaps giving him an unusual perspective.

VERY, very nice post, thanks so much, seriously. Wow. Wow, wow. It once again shows how much it's the photographer that makes the picture. I just saw 10 pictures until now, but they were truly great, simple, touching, perfect. This link should be posted as an auto reply to "which camera should I get, A or B" questions.

About Two-Button Reset on the F5:
Pressing BKT and CSM·buttons simultaneously for more than two seconds resets various modes to their initial settings.

You might also, try to deactivate the autofocus when shutter release is lightly pressed. Use the AF button to get the autofocus prior to shutter release when in this mode.

And, if none of this works... try to determine if somehow pressing the AF button also releases the shutter. If nothing corrects the problem...Nikon Service may be a resource or contact Nikon Support. Both cameras doing the same thing suggests an operator error rather than both malfunctioning identically at the same time.

I am not certain as to why I do what I do, but in the D4 is an XQD and CF card each 16 GB. And, I tend to download the photos to an external hard drive connected to the computer after a shoot, and reformat the camera entirely immediately after this. In the computer I have all the files in NEF and from that file I choose the downloads to Lightroom.

If, I am shooting an important job, I will look at the files in the hard drive to make certain I have those recorded and then reformat the memory in camera. Only after many years of photography have I determined my images are not priceless....and if they somehow are lost, well, I have lost tens of thousands due to Ektachrome dyes being unstable, so that is just the way it is. Hopefully, on Flickr, the images will stay for a while.

Ironically, when I ordered my D4, no one knew the cameras were delivered with the cards and reader. So, I have now two XQD readers and two 16 GB cards, but rarely use the second card as I perform the above and do not go out on long treks.

Hi Pino, welcome to NR. I am not familiar with the Nikon film cameras as I was an Olympus user but Can you tell us whether you have a motor-drive on there or just the mechanical button. If it is just the mechanical button, it sounds like some ageing has taken place of something non-metallic somewhere and is causing this.

Whatever, your course of action is clear - send it to Nikon for service.

On a related point - how are your light seals?

Huge SD cards (256, 128 and 64 GB) aren't needed for photography but come in handy inserted into a laptop as an extra "hard drive" or "removable media backup." I use from 4 to 32 GB and never fill them up. When a camera body has two card slots I will put one card in the first slot and a card containing twice as much GB into the second slot and set that second slot as backup. Then I shoot, edit and reformat the first card time and time again while just letting the second card fill up until it is nearly full before I reformat it. This way I have a backup of every shot from the last few shoots just in case I want to go beck and look for something I have already deleted when I edited. Cheap insurance. I use 4 GB in a D90, a 4 and 8GB pair in a D7000; 8 and 16 GB pair in a D600; and a 16 and 32 GB pair in a D800. I never come close to having a space problem but the most I usually shoot at a time is less than 300 images.

Hello my name is Pino and I live in beautiful Tasmania. I own 2 F5s which have the same problem, a hair-trigger shutter. The shutter sometimes fires without my touching the shutter button! It seems to occur randomly especially when I am rolling the camera gently in my hands. I took it to a camera technician and naturally it behaved itself and he could find nothing wrong with it but the problem persists.Has anybody encountered
the same problem with their F5? I put a roll of 24 film today and 7 shots went off without my touching the shutter button! Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I have successfully moved over completely to the more expensive Sandisk cards and find that 2 16 GB SD Extreme cards at 90mb/s and 2 32GB CF cards at the same speed get the job done for me no matter what.
looking at your photos, I think you could benefit from something fairly wide

if you are also getting, or thinking of getting, the 16-35 then the 28-300 should be fine

otherwise I would still recommend the 24 -120; ask your self. How often are your photos, take above the equivalent of 120mm, worth keeping

Congrats on the new camera. You'll really like it. My guess is you will want an ultrawide angle lens next - maybe something like the 16-35 f/4 VR.

You can guide future purchases by using software to graph the focal lengths you use most frequently. I use Wega2 - and its free. It will take a folder of JPEG files and provide a wide range of information on the images - Aperture, shutter speed, ISO, and focal length.

Thanks msmoto, I'll give it a try. I would like to at least approximate the original but if they have something that works that would be good.
