Might be the popup flash mechanism. My D800e (along with all others I have seen) make a rattle when the flash is closed, as the flash retention arms are not under pressure. If you pop up the flash, the rattle goes away since the arms come under spring pressure. . Completely normal.

I just did this with my D90 which has a lot of use. Sounds like a huge piece is loose inside. But, the fact is many of these cameras and lenses have parts which move and if jolted will make sounds. If the camera works, I certainly would not send it to Nikon and spend a service charge..maybe $75-$100 to find out nothing is wrong. I think if one sends in a camera even under warranty and no problem exists, there will be a charge. But, I cannot say for certain what any one service center will do.

Hi jtcaraig, welcome to the NR forum.

I have to ask you - have you noticed anything wrong with the function of the camera or any problems with the images that the camera takes, and do you have any previous experience with DSLR's of the D7000's complexity? I'm just trying to get a feel for the detail behind Newbie with that last question.

Hi. I am a newbie. I am also having exactly the same problem. And I also did what he did actually. My question is: Is the 'mirror flapping' normal? Shall I bring my D7000 to service center?

I too have had very good results with the 70-200mm f2.8 and the TC17. I am looking forward to using this with a TC2.0 III someday which should be even better. This is such a good lens! When I bought it, it nearly crippled me financially but it was worth every penny really and is my favourite portrait lens. To my surprise, it is also very good for product shots in studio and location as well and I often use it in preference to anything else.

@ DJBee49

Good point about the TC-20EIII with the 300mm f/4 being good. If one searches on the forum you will find a comparison I did with the 70-200mm f/2.8VRII with the TC-20EIII and when stopped down a stop it is excellent even when compared with the 400mm f/2.8VRII. Actually, the first generation of the 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6 VR (Ser No 201XXX) is an excellent performer when I use it and compares favorably with the 400mm f/2.8 and the combination of 70-200 plus TC above. The primary issue with the 80-400mm is the focus speed.

@ msmoto Nikon will sometimes say a combination will not work when it actually does function under some good conditions. They like to error on the conservative side so no one can get into a hassle about promising something which is not true.

I am sure that this is true and makes the dissemination by users of the real day to day possibilities, without 'corporate responsibility' getting in the way, very important.

On a related note, the reason this is all important to me, and I suspect others, is that I can neither afford nor justify the purchase of a 300mm f2.8, or more pertinently, a 600mm f4- however much I would like one....or both! Therefore, the performance of the 300mm f4 and TCs of various strengths is of great interest. This is in fact why I got the D800, not for the 36 megapixels or the video (I don't shoot video and my D700 had ample sensor resolution for me) but for the ability of the sensor to accept good AF performance at maximum apertures of f8. Thus, when I can afford one, I will get the TC 2.0 III and have a usable 600mm lens set up. The D800 and TC2.0 III is a CHEAPER option-by about half- than purchasing a 300mm f2.8 and TC2.0 III. I know it still is not going to be quite as good as the f2.8 option but I am not in a position to choose this anyway. Perhaps I would if I was able to justify it from professional earnings but wildlife photography is a hobby, not my professional photographic sphere. Maybe one day!

@ DJBee49...excellent point about the physical limits and potential for rear element/TC element colliding. Once this happens I suspect it could destroy both lens and TC. Playing with the lenses and focus points is probably the best solution to figuring all this out.

True and the clarity is welcome. I have not been able to find this information anywhere in Nikon's published material, hence the thread! The list of TCs that Nikon says do and do not work with various lenses is simply not accurate with relation to the D700 (and I presume other bodies) and is certainly inaccurate with regard to the D800. I am, of course, not referring here to those lenses whose rear elements physically collide with the TCs. That is a separate matter.

The only slight anomaly is that the camera WILL set to AFC 51 points! This is of no real importance to me but makes me slightly puzzled as to why Auto and 3D are programmed out but the straight-forward 51 points remains possible to set on camera! I also suspect that the set up probably would work in these settings in good light- were it possible to set them- but would not be sufficiently reliable for Nikon to 'allow' them to be set as an 'approved' option. I have no proof of this and will never be able to find out- even if I wanted to! I might, though, do some further experiments to see how well the 51 point setting on its own actually works at f6.7; just out of interest. I don't think that I have ever used this setting with the 300mm + TC17, only using the central cluster settings (up to 21 points) before on both D700 and D800 bodies.

Here is the answer to my query from Nikon for everyone's information.

Thank you for contacting Nikon Support.

TC17 converter darkens the photo by 1.5 EV. This means that if you use it with an f/4 lens, the effective aperture will be between f/5.6 and f/8 (roughly f/6.7).
D800 can focus up to f/8, but only with some of the AF points, not with all 51.
That's why the AF modes which use all 51 points are not available and that's why it works if you use the converter with your f/2.8 lens, which, combined with the converter, gives you effective f/4.7 aperture.

If you have any other questions please don't hesitate to contact us again.

Best Regards
Martin Maco

I think that the information on the Nikon website:

a. refers to the camera sensors before the D800 and

b. is covering their backsides as it is true that the (effective) f7 or f8 maximum aperture does not work fully for AF in cameras like the D700. In which case they obviously would not make claims for it that would not stand up in court. It does work though, as long as the ambient light levels are reasonable and many people have used TCs on the f4 300mm in the past with success- including me!

The combination should work properly with the D800 though as far as I can determine and I cannot see why it would prevent me SETTING AF Auto or 3D on the camera- working or not, but perhaps I am missing something!

I will contact Nikon in the near future and see if they can come up with any explanation.

I wish Nikon would update this or add an explanation. The lens will AF with the 1.4 and 1.7. I think there is too much light loss with the 2.0 though. In Thom's review of the lens he says it works great with the 1.4.

Maybe they used to not work with the older bodies, but it seems the list isn't all that relevant anymore...as I said I think it need to be updated or explained as there are always questions about the TC and lens combos.

As for the OPs problem...not sure about it. I don't have a TC to try it out or I would when I get home. You said it works on the 70-200...maybe it has something to do with the aperture ring or it being an older lens.

OR the camera is limiting it because of light loss...being F2.8 vs F4. Camera might actually be doing it intentionally...would be curious to see if anyone else has tried any other F4 lenses.

Thanks for the replies.

In fact the 300mm f4 WILL autofocus with the TC17 and I believe the TC2 as well. I have successfully used this combination on my D700 many times. It sometimes hunts a little and can be slow but it does work- in moderately bright light at least. The D700 allows full autofocus at f5.6 but struggles a little at f7 or so, whereas the D800 is designed to allow autofocus at f8 so it should work perfectly well, which it does. As msmot suggests above, it works fine in single point servo and with 9 and 21 point AF settings. The problem is that I cannot SET either AF auto or AF 3D with this 300mm f4 and the TC 17. The camera just will not come up with the setting. I do not have any other TCs to try out as substitutes for the TC17. I suspect some sort of electrical conductivity problem with this particular lens or TC and wondered if anyone else had had the same problem and if so what the solution was.

My 300mm f4 works fine on my D800. No problems. When I put my TC17 on it, I cannot select either 3d or Auto AF modes. When I put the TC17 on my 70-200mm f2.8 I can select all the AF modes. Curious. For some reason there is a specific problem with the 300mm and TC17. I have tried cleaning all the contacts to no avail. It may have been like this all along because I rarely use either 3D or Auto settings on this lens, indeed I may never have tried these settings on this lens before! All the other AF settings seem to work OK.

Any ideas anyone?

@golf007sd, there is also a "Nikon" tab on that same dialog that calls the same value "shutter count". The reason I like reveal is that it's a tiny standalone program that displays all of the EXIF data. I grew up on unix so I guess I have a tool mentality. Most apps are like Swiss army knives with a small chainsaw attached. Yes, you can use that Phillips head screwdriver on the knife in a pinch, but I like a real (standalone) screwdriver for most tasks. Really just boils down to personal preference I guess :-}
