Here is what i think what happened to mine.

At the beginning I transferred the file NOT using nikon transfer, (no issue) hence i wasn't aware that there were any. Later on i transferred other sets using Nikon Transfer 2 (had older version installed at the time) and these files are broken (they are viewable but not editable and not able to be converted to any other type i.e jpeg etc).

Nope, Photoshop 5.1 (part of CS 5.5) opens D800 NEF's just fine. However, if you're trying to launch Photoshop from Lightroom 4.1 you do get a warning about camera raw differences, but it will still open.

Now I'm not saying that CS6 and CR7 won't do a better job with them, but they do open with the older versions.

Tethered shooting does NOT work with LR 4.1 though (big nasty bummer surprise there).

I don't think CS6 is required to read D800 raw files. As I mentioned, the larger uncompressed raw files opened fine. I transferred the 14-bit files from my camera using Windows Explorer. I've tried DNG too. It does not recognize the file type.

Moreover, I just took more 3 shots in MOVIE mode and 3 in STILL mode and cannot replicate the results I had before. They all open fine now. Very frustrating. Maybe I can download a demo of CS6. I would love to be proven wrong.

The only other cause I can think of is that I had the *OLD* version of Nikon Transfer still on my computer when I transferred the 14-bit raw files (using Windows Explorer). Could that be the poison pill? Cheers

For Lightroom, you need version 4.1

Brock, which version of ViewNX2 do you have installed ?
You need to transer the files with the latest version of ViewNX2, and this needs to be installed after removing all versions of Nikon Transfer.

CS5 does not support CameraRaw 7 which is needed for the D800, for this you need CS6 , LR4.1 or Elements 10 .

Another path to use your D800 Raw files with CS5, might be to convert them using the last version of DNGconverter from adobe to convert your RAW's to DNG, and the use the result in CS5 ( maybe, did not try this...) .

Just wanted to point out I had a similar issue with a full weekend of pictures with my D800. I shot raw + basic, with raw set to the 14-bit compressed mode. The raw files are viewable only in ViewNX which says they are only 1632 x 1080. CS5 will not recognize the files even with Camera Raw 6.7 installed and reinstalled. I shot through the viewfinder with the switch in MOVIE mode. I tried some test shots with the switch back to STILL and CS5 opened them fine. In both cases the raw files are still around 33MB.

I have not any issues opening the large uncompressed raw files with the switch set to movie mode. It pretty much sucks to lose a whole weekend of on location raw files and be stuck editing basic jpegs.

Just an update

I tried to replicate the problem, took pictures with the LV indicator in Still and Movie, taking some more pictures prior to and after recording movie. Transferred the file via latest ViewNX2 (version 2.3.2 32 bit) no problem. Which i assume should not be a problem at the first place.

I wonder if it has something to do with the way i transferred the files to computer? There were 2 set of pictures are currently untouchable (not able to edit or convert, but viewable). One of them are meant to be use for my daughter's incoming birthday invitation :(

When i try to convert the nef file, a window pop up saying:
"Your selection includes some NEF/NRW images that cannot be edited with ViewNX 2. These images will be skipped. Do you want to continue? (If you click No, the change you made will be lost)"
with the option to click Yes or No. No matter which i select, it won't do anything.

Not sure what the problem is now, my first few sets of pictures taken were uploaded fine.

Just to add additional info, I think I have taken the picture with the Live View in movie mode. The info says the picture size is 1632 x 1080 FX, yet the file size is still over 70mb.

I wonder if this caused the problem as I had no issue previously.

Dear All,

I have almost similar issue, however, not quite the same.

I got the d800 for a while now, no issue with LR4 and have never try it on ViewNx2.

So last nite i tried to load recent pictures including video files to LR4. It only imported the video and failed to show the still files. I then tried on my ViewNX2 not sure how uptodate it was. It loaded the pictures but wont let me edit, not even convert the nef to anything. So I unistalled the ViewNX2 as well as Nikon Transfer 2. I then installed the ViewNX2 from the disk that comes with the d800. Still no joy.

I am running window 7 32 bit. Any idea what else can i try? I have tried to update the LR4 with no luck (it says it is already up to date).

Any help would be much appreciated.

Regards,
JY

I can verify that Lightroom 4 worked out of the box with my d800 and Lion. I don't use capture nx2. Bridge cs6 beta
does not recognize NEF files from my d800, but bridge CS5 does. I use Lightroom to save the files as adobe RAW files and go right into Photoshop CS6 if Lightroom isn't enough. The new Lightroom4 is a great program: I can't get over how useful it is! I'm glad you sorted Capture NX2: I could never get it to work right.

What, Nikon didn't build in D800 NEF file compatibility on that version??? LOL, I'd write in and complain Bennaux. Seriously though, don't beat yourself up, we've all done something similar.

As far as I know, RAW support in OS X comes from within the OS itself. I use Aperture, and recently downloaded updates from Apple to support the newest Nikon bodies (although, I don't have a D800 yet--plus, I'm also still only on Snow Leopard). But, I believe it's an issue with OS X, not LR or NX.
