I have a 2+ year old D90 and have had this "Green light of death" issue for a few months now. I am wondering, if one rememdy is to get the main power circuit board replaced, then, why would it only do this occassionally, wouldn't the board issue cause it to always do it?

I also have experienced other mentioned issues; not able to reset the camera with the (2)buttons pressed and/or reformat the memory card (in the camera), the back screen stays on until the shutter button is touched and other strange lock up errors. And, all of these seem to be occassional, not permenant.

I also have trouble with my SB-600 flash, either it does not recognize that it is attached, or it won't flash at all (at times)...

Has anyone heard of Nikon doing more to help all of us with these issues, especially since I am now out of warranty. Also, I hate paying for repairs and maintenance the does not actually correct or fix the problems.

It's a deadly common problem of D90. It's not the memory card at all.
Symptoms:
Memory access lamp is flashing when cam turned off. After terning ON the top LCD backlit lamp turned on and information came up on main LCD. After one snap they become normal. The battery drain like hell when turned off.
Fixation:
Simply go to the DSLR repair shop or Nikon service center and ask them to change the main power circuit board of the camera. Will take about $100 if the board available.
Reason of issue:
The power control IC get short and feedback the battery power to the battery causing the draining out and other problem like the top LCD back lamp turned ON after turning on the camera.
Careful:
To avoid this issue in future, after full charge of the battery, do not put it in the camera right then. Wait for the battery to cool down for 5-10 min and then put it in. With the full charge, the battery hold high ampere for a short time. It could damage the power distributor IC suddenly if you put it in the camera right after a full charge.

I'm glad to hear it, zman. I've never had anything get to me DOA, and I think if anything ever did I'd cry because I get so worked up about new things (tracking their status 3 times/day on UPS, downloading and reading user's manuals, etc.).

Spoke to CAMETA support, before I finished my sentence, he said, ship it back we're sending you a new one. Didn't elaborate on what the cause was; nor did they sound like they'd never heard of this in D90s and were surprised. That by itself was interesting.
I am a happy customer.

I've heard of this problem happening with D90's before. Its a sign of a faulty SD card slot.

I just purchased a d90 Thursday with this symptom.
I'm using the 24-120 lens and have tried 3 different
SD cards. No card in slot, no problem.
Happens with lens attached or removed.
Formats from menu but not from "red" buttons, though
they perform their normal functions.
Waiting to hear from seller.

I've never heard of BGLOD striking a D90 before? Nikon provides free repair on the D70 even if it's out of warranty. Is your camera completely dead? You should tell us what you have already tried doing. Try what the others have said and good luck. Keep us informed.

I seen many more problems and glitches overcome the Canon product than any Nikon or Olympus. Shut your camera pop the battery and the memory and start from ground up first seeing if it will respond to all the commands with another memory card. If not try with no memory card (you can make it shoot without a card by changing an option in the menu) if it still has a problem ^^^

You could try turning off your camera, removing the battery and then removing SD card from the camera.
After that replace the battery and turn on your D90 without SD card,
If the problem has gone than you have faulty or incompatible SD card, if not you are out of luck.
As for reliability Nikon is world leader but everything breaks sometimes (I recently had a problem with my Nikon lens CPU contacts and it was replaced in a matter of minutes), that your Nikon two years warranty is for, by the way Canon statistically has more warranty returns then Nikon, but I doubt it will be good enough explanation for your mother.

If you have tried resetting it by the method described in the manual, the AF and EV comp buttons in conjunction I think, and that has not cleared what ever is hurting the camera, then take it to Nikon.

If you did manage to reset it in any other way, you would probably invalidate what you have on your warranty, and the blinking green light could be indicative of one of many problems; so the likelihood of it arising again is there.

As for proving to your mother, whether you made the right choice or not, well, don't even try... A lot of people prefer one brand over another, regardless of whether they are actually aware of the capabilities of the other brand; so unless someone is using the 'right brand' then it will be wrong regardless. However, that is moot and invalid, because if you can take a good photograph, it doesn't matter what camera you use. A camera is a means to an end, not the thing that creates the magic.

hi guys the dreaded BGLoD has hit my nikon D90 does anyone out there have any quick fix solutions to my problem? all i've found on the internet is that i have to send it in... but i want to find out all my options before i decide to do so... also since for me to use my warranty i'll need to buy a ticket to our capital which will cost me a little extra. so if i can solve this problem some how without having to fly out i'd like to do so first... more so i cant format or reset my camera... =S sadly i'm stumped and worried and sad... i dont want to think that i made a wrong decision by choosing a nikon over my moms suggestion of canon... i love nikon! i love the ergonomics and i love the handle! i really hope this problem can be solved so i can get back to shooting and more so to prove to my mom that i still made the right decision... please! any help on the matter would be greatly appreciated...
