When I updated mine last night the icon automatically switched to 4.2. I would try finding lightroom and making a shortcut from there...or like spray said from the start menu.

FYI Nikon bought NX from Nik years ago and have been self developing the program themselves. The purchase of Nik won't make a difference in the Nikon world. The name may change possibly.

I'm not looking for an argument either, but a thought occurs...

Presumably there is "Pride" at stake here. No doubt Canon and Nikon (and others?) would argue that their RAW format was better than all the others. And hence be unwilling to adopt what might be seen as a "lowest common denominator" format.

True, all camera makers agree on JPG, but that's seen as a work-a-day solution, not an elite format.

I used viewNX and corel paint shop pro x2 for a while. It was OK. I used NX for the RAW and then messed with the jpegs in paint shop.

I eventually broke down and got lightroom though and use that exclusively now. I wouldn't do without now.

Not looking for an argument either, sorry if I came across that way. :)

The NEF format was developed years before Capture NX came around, and was used in "Nikon Capture", the original software that shipped when the D1 series was released in 1999. Nik helped Nikon make Capture NX2, for the control point system Nik developed. Nikon developed the original Capture NX in house several years before that. Nikon took over development again some time in 2011, so Nik hasn't had any active roll in the software for a while now.

I'm not looking for an argument, Rob, but Nik does have at least something to do with NEF because they produce Capture NX, which is Nikon's proprietary raw converter. Maybe the acquisition by Google won't change anything. I was just speculating that some google might rub off to make Nikon feel less evil...um...proprietary.

Do I have the relationships wrong here? I'm not very clear on all of this, which is why I asked the question.

BTW, in my previous post I should have said 'monetary interest in NEF.'

Edit: I think it's a bit wrong to say DNG doesn't play nice with everything. A better way to say it would be that not everything supports DNG. Is it the right format to be a standard? I don't know, but I think it is a step in the right direction.

Nikon was using NEF long before Nik was around, Nik has nothing to do with Nikon's RAW format.

It would be even nicer if there was a real open RAW format, not one created/maintained by Adobe. Not everyone uses Adobe products, and DNG doesn't play nice with everything.

It sure would be nice to unbox a camera and have lightroom support its raw format natively, and dng seems like a nice format to have that happen.

I just spent some time reading up on this, and it looks like my observation might just be due to chance (and may not even be accurate).

The updates for lightroom come out approximately quarterly, so if D600 support isn't included in the next one (4.2), it may be three months like TTJ was saying.

This is how I'm dealing with the D600 right now. If I want to do any heavy editing on a picture, I export the NEF to a TIFF using ViewNX 2 then play with the TIFF in Lightroom. For non-critical pictures I just shoot JPG usually.

Depends on the codec but usually 1-3 months. Due to the huge release of systems this last week, I'm guessing it will be closer to the 2-3 month mark.
