it works great, though it's a bit slow as it has to be driven by the camera body. I thought you had to lock it on the widest setting (ie;1.4), well, that's what I did, and used the d700 to adjust aperture (no i didn't, why would i be shooting on 1.4) when i rented it last week.

I recently replaced my AF NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4D with the new AF-S version. However, with the exception of 1 issue the AF-D gave me great service on my D700 and all three D3 (D3,D3x and D3s) over the last 4 years.

Like all AF-D lenses of its era the 85mm has a Auto/Manual focus ring-switch - and mine broke - I got it fixed, it cost me £100 though. So big lesson - try to keep it in one (auto-f) or the other(manual-f).

As to setting the aperture - I would keep the lens locked in f/16 and use the camera body to select the aperture you want - its much easierthis way. That way you won't forget if you want to move to shutter or auto or manual exposure settings and you will limit wear on the lens.

Didn't even know that there was that function. The only reason why I know about the lock thingy was that I handled a D90 with the 50mm 1.8. That's a really cool combination.

Yes the AF-D lens works fine when you change the aperture through the dials on the camera when the lens is locked at F16. I just wanted to be clear the camera does not meter when you dial the aperture, however I'm not sure why anyone would want to dial the aperture.

On a D300 and up, you can change the settings (custom settings F7, Aperture Setting) in the camera to allow you to change the aperture on the lens, rather than via the dial.

Are you using an AF-D lens?

You're supposed to lock the aperture at F16 and then change the aperture through the dials.

Noxin, that is exactly what I wanted to know, could you change the aperture via the camera dials as usual. Glad to see it works like expected.

I have this lens on my D700. Everything works like it should, although I have only changed the aperture through the camera dials. Fantastic combination if I say so myself.

Hello all, just a presumable simple question. will the AF NIKKOR 85mm f/1.4D IF work correctly on a d700 or d3 series body. Will you be able to change aperture as usual on the camera body. Are there any issues I should be aware of?

I have looked around a bit, but been unable to get the answers. Ideally someone here has used this combo and can say definitively.
