Let's stay on topic... I had a question that was bugging me for a few days and that is if the older 50mm 1.2 is any good on D800. I was planning to get the 50mm as my "last" lens in a few years but I just want to know if the 50 1.2 is something to consider if I find one for a good price. Also I found something about "coma" and Im not sure if this applies to this lens but if so then it's probably not that useful to me.

I have an early 60's 50mm 1.4 and I use it fine on the D800. Technically the newest lenses produce better photos but when you use older lenses or the 1.2, you are going for a "Look" not technical perfection.

Of the 1.2s probably only the newest version (that is still made) would take the most advantage of the sensor. MF is hard to hit and anything off, you will see it.

I can't answer that, don't own that lens. I do have an ais 50f1.4 and 50f1.8, the AFD 50f1.4 and the new AFS 50f1.8. I've accumulated these over the years because there was a time when a 50mm seemed to be sold off with every SLR on the secondhand market or maybe it was just me. Of all those lenses the AFS 50f1.8 is the best, I tried the AFS 50f1.4 at the same time but it weighed a lot more was only a little bit faster and cost a lot more. I stop down to f5.6 or f8 most of the time anyway so it was no contest. The new 50f1.8 is a no brainer it's brilliant, light good IQ. I bought the new one when I decided to go all primes.

As for the 1.2, it's only a tiny bit faster, it costs a lot more, it's manual focus only (ok by me). I have read there is a coma issue but its a really old lens design. Can't imagine why a tiny bit faster is worth it, the 1.4 is pretty good.

If you need 36MP in actual resolution, which really requires you to use a tripod, mirror lockup etc, then you will want a very good lens to fully resolve this. In the Nikon literature that comes with the D800 there is mention of lenses they recommend but I bet they only considered current lenses. Nikon have a vested interest in trying to sell their 24f1.4 etc. When I do landscapes I do use a tripod etc and I go for my best lenses. I have also tried my 75-150E lens on my D800e and the results are stunning, are they as sharp as my 85f1.4 at f8, well no but they are still stunning quality if you take care. There is much more to a sharp image than a sharp lens. Most people don't need to resolve all 36MP, I like to get max sharpness and res for my landscapes and I've slowly migrated to all primes for that work. If I shoot a portrait, I am happy with the 75-150 hand held, the D800 is a stunning camera and out resolves the D700 even hand held.

Buy a D800 use old lenses and be happy you get 20MP in res or whatever but when you do use the best lenses you'll get the best results possible. It depends on your work if you really need that quality.

All those quoting Ken, he's a tosser. There are much better sites.

I bought one with funds from a client at the beginning of the year. My client elected to use the 17 to 35 lens for his application instead so I got to keep the 14-24.

I haven't used it yet, as it is not something I use for work, and I have never used a lens wider than 24 mm before. I will try to take some pictures with the widest of angles on my holiday trip to Nikko next week and post them on PAD. (There, now I have promised to use the lens and post pictures!)

What a fool I was. Now that I own D800 14-24mm is the lens I pretty much want right now. :)

I understand davideanastasia wants to use 18-35mm or something like 20mm 2.8D on D800.

I can't help you with 18-35 but I personally use 24mm f/2.8D until I get cash for something better. :) It's a good lens that's pretty sharp for the price. Quote "It is as sharp as the $1,800 24-70mm AF-S" Quote -Ken Rockwell
Im not sure about the 20mm 2.8D but I think it's not bad either just don't look in the direction of a 28mm 2.8D and you will be good.

Should work fine just fine short of something being wrong with the lens. From what I can tell it is an AF lens so there shouldn't be any issues at all with it.

If you can find one, I have an older Tokina 17mm F/3.5 ATX (crackle finish) and the thing performs superbly on my D800. I think I got mine for about $150 used but usually they go for $200-$300 on ebay. They are not up there often but few know what they are, and you can usually get some really good deals.

The other one I have considered is the old 20mm-35mm f/2.8. Anyone ever used that?

While I do not have a D800, yet, I have used this 20 mm on the D3 for 4 years. It is really a fine lens. Plan you picture around the distortion of a super wide and you will love the lens. A lot of bang for the buck.

I was wondering if anyone had had issues with a D800 or D800E locking up since the new firmware came along? I have had my D800E lock up 3 times now. Each time an err is displayed and you can not turn the camera off. It is completely loced up and all I can do to recover it is to follow the steps below.

Turn off (even though it doesn't)
Remove battery
Remove cards
Wait period of time (20 sec) and reinstall battery.
Turn on (err is still flashing)
shoot a picture sans cards (Err disappears)
reinsert cards and go

I can find no pattern to the lockups. I have tried many solutions to unlock the error but only the sequence above seems to help. I was thinking this problem was solved with the latest firmware but it appears I have the latest version available.

Is there a solution to this I have missed short of the 6+ week trip to Nikon USA for warranty repairs?

@corigliano: Having not use shutter propriety in a very, very, long time on any of my bodies, never the less, I just pulled out my D4 and test it out. The only thing I noticed when I was trying to get proper exposure, the F-stop would start to flash indicating that I was not at the right shutter speed for the lighting in the room. The exposure indicator on the right side, while looking threw the viewfinder also showed up indicating that I was under exposed. Are these the things you are referring to?

I have had my d4 for about three months now. Twice I have seen a problem with the meter indicator inside the view finder. The problem is as following. When in shutter priority mode the metering indicator pops up in the viewfinder and starts going crazy. I havent reached below my maximum aperture and am not using bracketing or exposure compensation. There should be no reason to even see the metering indicator. Any suggestions??

I finally got my 20mm f/2.8 AIS (circa 1985 or so) from Adorama as a project lens since it had issues. Cleaned the aperture blades and for the most part got the focus system on the lens re-calibrated. I think it is still a little soft at infinity but it is a lot better than it was to start with. Whomever owned the lens before had apparently taken it apart (to clean it I am assuming) and reassembled it wrong in a lot of ways. So after much messing with it there is no longer tunnel vision of being scary out of focus and it is consistent across the whole frame. Need to shoot with it some more to see if I need to try adjusting it more but at least it is now usable. Now to figure out if I want to dork around with getting infinity right or to see if there is a place that will calibrate that for me for a reasonable rate.

Indeed I have a D4 and I noted the left focus issue (not existing at all in live view with the same scenery and exposure) when I use the 24-70 at 24mm at f2.8. it is ok at center sensor and better (than left) but not perfect on right sensor. The problem exists also on the left sensors that are not fully left. I am seeing with Nikon suisse or germany if they can address the problem that apparently has been successfully fixed by Nikon repair centers on D800 at least. And my unit was quite new as bought in August and embodying already the latest fw. I am a little bit disappointed as I discovered it unintentionally when just shooting pics.
Suddenly there is a flashing "Err" sign in the Control Panel. I tried changing batteries, cards, tried reminding the camera that it is in S Mode in order to coax the mirror down. No response yet. Still the "err" message. Is there a way to reboot the camera?

Have you tried a fresh battery? Factory reset? Also, check the contacts on the camera body inside the lens flange for any damage or crud.

Edit: on second thought, if it all works in live view, it's not a crud on the contacts problem. Do try the reset and pulling the battery.

So I've had my D5100 close to a year, and it suddenly stopped auto focusing when shooting through the viewfinder. However, if I switch to live view the AF works just fine, so obviously everything is setup for AF. This incident occurs in every shooting mode, with every lens I have (standard 18-55 & 70-300, also 18-200). I'd appreciate any input or knowledge about this problem. Thanks!
