It's probably worth the extra hundred dollars to get the AF-S version, LTTL. That way you won't have to worry about Nikon releasing a pro body without the AF screw. I don't see it happening, but no one can tell the future.

I'll be buying the D800 when it's released. So will there be no point in getting the G lens? I don't mind manual focusing on it for a few months.

Well it's established that you'll want the 50mm f1.4G lens for your setup. You should be happy with the fast glass and something that is essential in most of our kits.

I think the optics are nearly identical.

samysbr: welcome to the forum. The 35 1.8G is another good option that will AF on the D5000 and doesn't cost as much as the 50 1.4G.

The 50 1.4G has a focus motor so it will autofocus with your D5000, so that's the one you want. The older 50 1.4D uses the older screw drive focus system,, so wont focus with the D5000.

I think if you buy the 50mm 1.4 G lens it focuses on cameras such as the D40, D5000 etc.

Don't meant to hijack the thread or anything, but is a 50mm 1.4 G any better than the older version? Is the only extra feature auto focusing or does it have better image quality as well?

photo923 said:
Tokina makes a good "macro" screw in and a .45 wide angle that works very well if you don't need a dedicated macro. I've used one for years to my satisfaction. I think you could pick one up on EBay for around $40.

Photo923, which Tokina macro lens are you referring to here? Just curious... (and making sure it works on D5000s...)

All the important variables have pretty much been covered, but i'll add my bit. I bought my camera with the 18-55 and the 55-200. I also bought a 70-300 which i returned.

the Nikon 70-300 is significantly larger and heavier than the 55-200, this is very noticeable on a small camera. The image quality of the 70-300 is better, but with 2 years of hindsight, i agree with my decision: i would have used my 70-300 MUCH less than i currently use my 55-200, as a consequence of its larger size. Your experience may vary.

VR is VERY important in my experience. go to your camera store and grab a 55-200, go to 200 and half-press the shutter. The VR will turn on and you will be pretty shocked at how much more stable the image is.

Also, its essential whenever you do not have enough light, which is usually pretty often.
