I read that Studio as well. I hope not because other manufactures will make fun
out of Nikon for not doing so.

looks descent. . .maybe a stop better than the D90, so I would say we're in for some interesting pre-photokina announcements with the D90 sucessor (which will have to be better than the D3100 at the minimum, I'd hope. . .)

That ISO3200 shot looks like it is at least as good as the D90 at ISO1600, assuming that sample hasn't had some heavy noise reduction applied in post.

Is it's high ISO better than a D90?

Wow, a 600mm f/4 would be pretty hilarious on a GF2, even more so than a D40 style body.

Well sometimes they do get early production models (dpreview) but for the most part manufacturers don't release anything until right before or right after the cameras go on sale.

I was under the impression that tech sites got the camera early to do their thing with it, but maybe I've just followed too many smartphone releases in the past! I'm really eager to see some feedback on this camera; it'll be my first venture into the world of DSLR's (and really, the world of photography).

Welcome to the forum Baytastic. There aren't any "full" reviews yet, just some initial hands-on with the D3100. We usually get some "real" reviews a few weeks after it goes on sale. Maybe sooner if dpreview.com already has a production version of the camera.

It is necessary then to get a 10mm lens in order to have at least a resulting 20mm wide, when using a 3/4ths camera body. I like the idea of the 200mm f/4 Nikkor becoming a 400mm f/4 with this EVIL-type camera. I am now eager to see what the Panasonic GF2 may be like (if it ever comes out).

Does anyone know when reviewers will get their hands on this? I'd love to see a review before I preorder.

Why not just ship it directly.. ..
and these days good ol photoshop can be the "filter" in most cases..

However.

There are several pages worth of information off this site as well. The sites for Hoya, Tiffen, and Schneider-Kreuznach have tips and -- even more helpfully -- photos showing what the filters actually do. To further complicate things, you can also experiment with gels on your strobe, and if you use those in conjunction with color lens filters, things can get interesting. :)

Yes, your lenses will be cropped significantly and your wides will feel quite unimpressive. On the plus side, your 200 practically becomes a wildlife lens :).

I've never purchased a camera from overseas but I buy online from various US retailers and haven't had a major problem yet. As long as you stay away from "too-good-to-be-true" prices you should be OK.

B&H Photo, Adorama, Ritz, Calumet, and other major retailers. B&H Photo and Adorama do lots of international business. Amazon has the D3100 for $699 and they also do preorders so you might want to go with them.

Thank you. I am concerned about the focal length a 3/4 format camera when used with regular 35mm lens. I suppose that a Nikkor 20mm f/4 will become 40mm f/4 when mounted with an adaptor on the Panasonic GF1 or similar, and similarly a 200mm f/4 will turn into a 400mm f/4. Is that so? Even my ultra wide 12mm will only turn into a 24mm, so I feel that I shall need a dedicated wide Panasonic lens for true wide angle shots in a 3/4 format body.

With the proper adaptor, yes, but focus and exposure etc will be entirely manual.

I have a 20mm to 200mm range of manual AI and non-AI Nikkor lens, including 24mm, 35mm, 50mm and 105mm. Can I use them in a Panasonic GF1 with a M4/3 to Nikon adapter?

The D3100 sounds like a good lightweight camera for traveling for a geiser like me with back problems. I just wish it had a higher res screen.

Sony cameras have had that feature for a long time jonny. The zoom to focus I mean.
