Thanks guys, yeah the Tokina is almost a prime.
Not much difference between 11 & 16mm, I haven't had the time to really test the 10-24mm yet, hopefully soon!

Cool nice job guys! Are you enjoying the 10-24mm more than the 11-16mm Tokina so far Regulator? When I had a copy, the 11-16mm always felt more like a wide angle prime so I understand why you made the jump perhaps :)

The 17-55mm was my first love nikkor lens... First new nikkor lens I tried at Samys and swore I'd own one someday... 2 17-35mm f/2.8's and a 14-24mm f/2.8 later I still don't have one. :P

Your kit is looking very well-rounded.

I'm looking forward to enjoying the results of your purchase in the PAD thread.

If you have a moment, can you message me what you sold your 18-200mm for?

Haven't really had a chance to try out the 16-35 in daylight stopped down for landscape shooting to really see how sharp it can get, but it's let me open up the night during a bit of walking around. Though I shoot a few frames on continuous 6fps, I've taken "sharp" (as sharp as ISO 1600+ can get) shots at up to 1 second at 16mm and 1/2 second at 35mm. And the 24mm f/1.4, shooting usually at f/8 for landscapes, oh my goodness is that a sharp lens! Plus the creative abilities of shooting at f/2 or f/1.4 at a wide angle to get a shallow DOF, with the nice smooth bokeh, really opens up creative opportunities in confined spaces where I couldn't use a longer lens to achieve shallow DOF. Already put a bunch of those shots in the photo-a-day threads.

Also, the 16-35mm was just in time for my trip to Iceland! I fly out the 14th and return the 24th, with the 16-35, 24, 70-200, and either the 100 or 35 and 50 (fitting everything in my one small bag to stay in carry-on with me). Also, 2x 64GB, 2x 32GB, and 2x 16GB SD cards. I'll be doing nothing but Iceland for quite a while after I get back. :)

Congrats! I just sold my Tokina 12-24mm and snagged a used 16-35mm f/4 VR when a used one came up on lensrentals. This comes shortly after getting a used 24mm f/1.4 off B&H.

(One of my friends got a refurbished 24mm f/1.4 when he saw I'd bought one, and happened to bring the same kit to a dance as I did!)

Now I'm at:

Nikkor AF 20mm f/2.8D
Nikkor AF-S 24mm f/1.4G
Nikkor AF-S DX 35mm f/1.8G
Nikkor AF 50mm f/1.8D
Tokina AF 100mm f/2.8D Macro
Nikkor AF-S 16-35mm f/4G VR
Tokina AF 28-80mm f/2.8D
Nikkor AF-S 70-200mm f/2.8G VR1
Kenko 1.4x TC

Hopefully my next thing will be a 2x teleconverter, but I keep myself more or less at the whim of the used lens market. Not sure what my next body will be... D800's most likely released body, but who knows what'll come out.

I sold my Tokina 11-16mm and Nikkor 18-200mm, then added two new lenses to my Nikkor collection.

One of Nikkor's sharpest lenses for the DX format.
The 17-55mm f/2.8 is a beautiful piece of glass.

And the latest DX super wideangle from Nikkor - the 10-24mm.

I can't wait to put these through their paces. :)
Now my kit consists of the following:
Nikkor 35mm F/1.8
Nikkor 50mm F/1.8
Nikkor 85mm F/1.8
Nikkor 105mm F/2.8 VR Macro
Nikkor 10-24mm F/3.5
Nikkor 17-55mm F/2.8
Nikkor 70-300mm VR

Next upgrade will be Nikon's next DX body, hopefully they release it later this year, or early 2013 (fingers crossed).

Tokina 12-24mm is great lens, very well build and optically correct.
AT-X 124 PRO DX II has built in motor so it can be used on every Nikon (D40,D60,D5000 and all others).
At the current price level it is probably best buy ultra wide DX lens in my opinion.

I don’t think that the build quality of Sigma lenses is proverbial or idiomatic, it is just not as good or consistent as Nikon or Tokina, the fact actually valued by some people as well as manual focus override that both very much affects the typical use of this or any other lens for me.
It does not have to be a Nikon lens no matter what, but if IQ, usability and everything else is better what exact methodology do you use to say how this relates to the price, for example what measurable parameters would you use to evaluate IQ and price difference between 200-400 and 70-300 Nikon lenses.

The Sigma 10-20 is built like "the proverbial", and for the typical use at these focal lengths the speed of focus and manual override are not factors. Likewise "slower and noisier" for the Tokina doesn't affect typical use for this lens.

So, apart from the "it must be Nikon" school-of-thought, basically it's down to IQ v. price, and there's not enough information available to make a judgement.

Nikon 10-24 is more useful, better built, faster to focus, easer to manually override AF if needed, sharper and therefore better than Sigma 10-20.
Tokina 11-16 is build very well, but it has much smaller range than Nikon or Sigma, and it doesn’t have built in AF motor that makes it slower and noisier to focus.
I actually find all these lenses pretty good and your choice should depend on what you could afford and your personal preferences.
I doubt vast number of reviews could give you a definite answer, more reviews you read usually means you get more confused by author’s personal preferences.

Leon, save your money and go with the Tokina. 10mm is a little wider than 11 so if your obsessed with getting wide, you may want the Nikon. The distortion at 10mm is a bit on the heavy side, so I don't know how useful it will be unless you are willing to correct all your shots. Otherwise, the Tokina gives you a solid and more impoortant fast, lens that performs well.

As far as DX vs. FX... well lets just say that if you want FX, you only really have 1 option. The good news is its the best wide angle option on the planet for the 35mm format.

Why? Why is it so much better? I'm waiting for someone to do a comprehensive comparison of Sigma 10-20 vs Nikon 10-24 vs Tokina 11-16. One has the best bang for buck, the other has the best range, and the last has fixed, fastest aperture and toughest build.

I wish one of them would just blow the others away and make this decision easy!!
