I just pulled the trigger on a 24-70. I don't think a VR will come out at the time of the D800 announcement, but if it does I'll return it, I suppose.
My only regret is that unlike my 17-35, it cannot be used with my F2s.

FYI: I don't use a clip on diffuser, the batteries are fresh and the flash is auto TTL mode. Strange that it will not work at times and then rare times it does. ????

Thanks everyone for your input. BTW: I just turned on my SB900 and it was syncing up with my 18-200 mm lens again tomorrow it might not. johnnyapple I will need to look up the focal length information to see if that info is being stored in the exif data.

Check your batteries... The Sb900 will have a slightly off response when it is near death... Also make sure the contacts are clean.

Are you using the on-board diffuser or the clip-on diffuser dome? Either of those will lock the SB-900 zoom head to 14mm.

is there a chance your flash is set to manual zoom?

I don't know what would cause that, Marc, but could you let us know whether the focal length information is being stored in the exif data of the pictures you take with the 18-200? That way you would know if the lens isn't communicating it to the camera. I'd think that's the first place to look. Welcome to the forum.

HI all, I was hoping that someone might be able to help me figure out why my flash is not syncing up properly with my 18-200 mm Nikkor lens. I have a SB 900 Nikon flash and sometimes it will sync up with my D7000 and my 18-200 mm Nikkor lens but most of the time it will not. I have always tried to make sure my D7000 is off (sometimes forget to turn off) when I attach my SB 900 flash. I also try to make sure the flash is off when I disconnect or connect it to the camera body. I will then start up my D7000 and then switch on my flash. First thing I will do is move the 18-200 mm lens in and out to see if the flash has connected or synced up to the lens. When the flash syncs properly the flash's internal lens will automatically adjust the focusing of the light (in or out) with the lens zoom range.

Is there anything I can do to correct this problem? I recently updated my D7000 firmware but that didn’t seem to help correct that issue… HELP

The 24-70mm was my last lens purchase in the "trifecta" It is now my "go-to" lens and on my camera pretty much all the time. Use it much more than the 70-200 or the 14-24. Should have bought it first!

would love to see one, but I doubt it's gonna be released soon - there's a lot of different lenses that needs to be upgraded before this one

Boy I'd hate to see how much that would cost especially with the 70-200mm VR II going for nearly 3 grand yikes...

Having the 24-70 2.8 is, in my humble opinion, a no brainer. I use it a lot and each time the result just makes me prrr. In short, it is a must have. IF you are really looking for a lens that has VR that is close to this range, then the 16-35 F/4 would be my recommendation.

Im guessing the 24-70 replacement will be a f/4 and bigger than the 27-70mm like their wide replacement :P

I assume that the high mpx in the D800 (?) will be addressed in any lenses that are released with it (higher lens resolution?). I going to guess a fast prime. I would love it if it was the 28-200 f2.8 and the 10mm f/4 they patented

I think waiting for this one and a 85mm 1.4 vr is like waiting for the second coming. I have seen some sub patents filed for years so you know they keep trying designs but something keeps them from building one. Size? Cost? Who knows.

I'm with the camp that says, if you need it, get it. If you can afford to wait 6 months, maybe you don't really need the lens at all?

The current 24-70mm F2.8 is a great lens, no need to wait, IMO.

I shoot a D7000, so DX. I usually try to keep my shutter speeds at least 1/60 while handholding but I have gotten decent results as slow as 1/15 or 1/30 with some sort of structure to lean against while shooting. The beauty of that lens is that it's sharp at F2.8 so you can actually shoot fasters shutter speeds to reduce chances of blur.

I only have FX bodies. I mainly use it at it's wide end and so have never missed VR.
