Just curious, would anyone want a Nikon DSLR with a touchscreen? Perhaps for focus point selection or for menus? Maybe they could put a multi-selector and a touchscreen and get the best of both worlds.

Don't know about *want* - my gut says it would be too small to use accurately and/or too slow to use except in a studio set up situation.

I'm open to being convinced otherwise as it might just be a case of what you know best is what you want but at this point in time I'd have to say no.

My Best guess is $6200 for the D4.

This talk about the 9 cross sensors up-to f/8, I think what's missing is the specs on the other cross-type sensors that will be operational up-to f/2.8 and f/5.6. I'm sure there will be a slew of these cross-type sensors. We really don't need more than 51 total AF points, but if Nikon can improve upon the industry's best AF system by adding even more cross-type sensors, it will be a winner and all we really need.

Native ISO of 102,400? Oh. Em. Gee. If 102,400 is as clean as ISO 25,600 on the D3s, I'll be amazed. I know that's a 2 stop improvement, but Nikon is increasing native ISO by 3 full stops! I can't see them making that big of a jump in NATIVE ISO if they weren't able to achieve at least 1.5-2 stops over the D3s. Who knows, maybe they were able to increase SnR by a full 3 stops? My other question is DR. I'm preparing for at LEAST 14EV of DR in the D4, maybe even 14.5EV. 16bit RAW would be nice, too. :)

I'm all in for a D4. I know I'll have my hands on one at some point in the near future - exactly when, remains to be seen. I'm hoping for a early January announcement with the first shipments in early to mid March. Let's see what happens!

The devil is in the details but I think a D4 is going under my Easter bush.. :)

Mike: Of course, I don't know. But I will guess the D4 price will be closer to $6,000 than to $8,000. It seems like the D4 will be more of a D3s replacement than a D3x replacement (look at those high ISO numbers suggesting an effort to produce even cleaner higher ISO images than the D3s thus making the D4 a desirable successor to the D3s for pros shooting sports). Assuming the D800 does have a 36 megapixel sensor (or a D900 version has such a sensor), Nikon may tweak that high megapixel FX sensor for a D4x version of the D4 and charge $8,000 for that version. Let's hope so. I don't think there is much hope for a D4 price under $5,000 so I would guess around 6 grand.

Hi all,

I know that is awfully premature, but does anyone have a guess as to the D4's initial price? Similar to D3x? Is that the thinking?

It doesn't seem to have _a lot_ of new technology (at first blush). I don't know what the R&D costs Nikon is asking folks to pony up for; IOW, it seems to offer a mild upgrade for some needed video enhancements (and my hats off to Nikon for that, but it is a bit late, so fair warning, you better get it {all of it} right this time) I'm not sure that the camera is really going to demand the big bucks.

This is coming from the King of the fanboys, so from a pure marketing strategy, Nikon should look at perhaps putting this camera out at a bargain price to shore up some sore points from some bad blood made by perceived missed promises over the last year or two.

My best,

Mike

The f8 autofocus sensor makes me feel this is a little fake- Nikon doesn't usually address this although Canon usually does, and the big uproar (so to speak) about the 1dX is that is no longer has f8 sensors.

WooHoo! Finally have real D4 specs to discuss:
16.2 MP
11 fps
100-102,400 native ISO range, expandable to 50 and 204,800
CF + XQD memory card slots! That's right, the Nikon D4 will have the new Compact Flash XQD memory card slot.
Compatible with the new Nikon WT-5 wireless transmitter
Integrated Ethernet in the camera
Face detection/recognition function that will be working in the viewfinder (maybe some type of a hybrid viewfinder? Nikon had several related patents)
Improved video, I have no other details on that but my guess is 1080p/30/25/24 and 720p/60/30/25/24 similar to the Nikon D800
Uncompressed video out through the HDMI port
Ability to assign the two buttons on the front of the camera to smooth aperture control during video recording
Improved 51 AF points
AF detection range will go down to EV-2.0 (the D3s went to EV -1)
Autofocus system: 9 cross-type sensors that are operational up to f/8

So a little disappointed about no "built in WiFi" transfer gadget...
Excited about the AF update.
Quizzical about the lack of dual CF...CF+Xqd or whatever is odd...

Thoughts?
