Nice suggestion actually and now thet I think about it I would like for their cameras to have a function for it... I have always used lightroom in post though and If you can put your subject in the same place on the grid in the viewfinder the batch process isn't horribly bad... Also considering that is supposed to be a alternative for those who are too poor to go into medium format digital it isn't a bad idea...

By the way we just moved forums so you should probably repost at http://forum.nikonrumors.com/discussions (is that link ok?)

How soon is an 1 x 1 Aspect ratio firmware coming out. Is it possible to have a square crop in my D-800? It been long needed. Almost all the photographs you see on the Internet are square. I need a square crop 1x1 in the view finder particularly for all the many hundreds of photographers that I'll have soon. The headshots all have a consistent tight crop look not all over the place. Does anyone have an email address or phone number at Nikon so we can persuade an executive to push for this new firmware that's needed? I'm sure I'm not the only one who needs 1x1 aspect ratio in the camera. I'm going to have two thousand headshots taken daily at all my locations nationwide. Far to costly for post production and the photographs would be consistent looking either. <Link Removed>

kanuck said:
Interesting to know, thanks itsnotmeyouknow for sharing and welcome to the forum. You didn't waste much time and quickly built up an impressive list of gear! The 35mm ZF .2 F2 is fantastic isn't it? I heard the 21 and 25 lenses are outstanding especially on the D800. I had a 25mm ZF original version for my F100 a while back but had to trade it in for a zoom lens. I think it was part of the 24-70mm lens that I picked up back in 2010..

Thanks for the welcome! Yes the Zeiss is excellent on both cameras. The focus grip is as smooth as silk. It's also very sharp. I had a brief look at the 25 and the 21 and decided to stick with the 35 as that is a good FL to have stuck to the camera for a walkabout. I'm amazed that since I bought my D800 in September I have taken almost 16,000 shots! I do tend to be quite snap happy! I do love the detail of the D800, it's USP for me is the dynamic range. Maybe Canon will catch up. But resolution isn't everything they will need to catch up on the DR or handle the noise better at low ISO when you are forced to push the shadows.

bleephotography said:
Thanks all for the input. If my third copy of the Canon 24-70 II arrives subpar, I will be switching over to Nikon indefinitely. Although Canon has its advantages, I feel like the current feature set of Nikon might be more suitable for my intended progression.

If this ends up being the case, what do you think of the following setup for a Nikon noob:
D800E
14-24 f/2.8
24-70 f/2.8
70-200 f/2.8 VR II
35 f/1.4

and one SB-910.

With this setup my approach is minimalist and versatility, with the intention of covering my bases for anything from weddings to landscapes, and even to sports...

Your story is almost exactly like my story. I just got to feel that I (and everyone else) was not getting any younger and at my stage in life, I was no longer willing to just wait for Canon to enter the high MP game. I do landscapes and seascapes and every time I go out and shoot I can choose to pick up a Nikon bag or a Canon bag. I've been a Canon shooter for about 9 years and a Nikon shooter for less than a year. But in my own testing using one of my actual landscape locations I've compared all the lenses of both Canon and Nikon. I miss my 17 tse Canon lens and the dual axis 24 tse Canon lens. The Nikon 24 tse is ok but I really enjoy using the Nikon 14-24 which is very versatile. The extra resolution and much higher dynamic range of my Nikon is much better than my Canon work. I have both the D800 and D800e and I prefer the "E" model, although I keep it for special occasions (like really good weather).

Right now I'm having a focusing problem with the D800 and the 24-70 (needs -20 af adjust at 70), but I'll send it into Nikon. My D800e doesn't have the problem. By the way, if you can afford to, you CAN keep your Canon equipment and just choose to shoot Nikon. I really feel that Canon will come around sometime in the next 2-4 years and deliver (actually deliver - not just announce) a high MP camera (over 40mp). Then I will once again enjoy all my great Canon lenses plus my Nikon lenses (because Nikon lenses CAN fit - with Noveflex adapters - Canon bodies). I hope you enjoy your Nikon experience.

My only issue with the move from D700 to D800 was the silly way you change from single AF to continuous AFC AFS. I don't use AF much anyway but when I want to change to continuous for wildlife shooting I usually forget. Now that's my stupid story but I'm sure there are other slight things that will annoy someone that has used the D700 a long time but the D700 is old news and technology has moved on. May the D700 RIP.

It's easy to fall I love with the D800

I have just changed from a D700 to a D800 and first of all would agree with andy sharp, the D700 is a fabulous camera and one that I loved using. In particular, I thought its low light level performance for theatre work was outstanding. Even at ISO 3,200, it would produce slightly noisy but usable results.

Personally I found the transfer to be almost painless with very little trouble in programming the few changes into my old, personal memory banks! The major change that affected me was the AF settings and the transfer of the AF designation button to the front of the camera. It is all second nature to me now and I think it is simpler to use in many ways.

My main reason for changing was that I wanted to get at the new sensor because of its ability to auto focus properly with f4 lenses and teleconverters. It manages this significantly better than the D700. (there is a separate thread discussing this) The lower fire rate does not really worry me and the 36 megapixels is a nice bonus. You can boost the fire rate up to 6fps (I think) with an extra battery grip.

In studio, the better rear display is an unexpected improvement, especially in 'info' mode, and I have found it to be an excellent studio camera. The image quality is obviously very good, with the dynamic range being noticeably better- rather like the jump between the tonal subtlety of 120 film when compared to 35mm film. You can blow images up to a very impressive degree retaining a quality that is significantly better than the D700 and I think the White Balance is better, even 'Auto WB' that I never found was that good on the D700. The manual setting for studio flash is absolutely spot on, requiring no adjustment at all after shooting. The 'video' capability? Dunno, I have never used it! I probably will one day though.

Bad points? Not much really. The battery does not seem to last quite as long and it is a complex beast to use but then so is the D700. On the whole, I am glad that I changed but regret not having had enough money to have kept the D700 as well!

I also think there is quite a lot of misleading information about what lenses you should or should not be using on the D800, most of it rather shameless marketing hype. Your lenses are going to be just as sharp as ever, the only change being that the resolution of the sensor is now possibly able to outstrip the resolving power of the lens. Big deal! That happened with fine grained film for decades as well! I still use my old 28-105mm AF 3.5-4.5D lens that is really only a budget priced 'do it all, carry around lens' that produces very good images, just as it always has done. Even the 'macro' is pin-sharp and I have absolutely no intention of getting rid of it because someone tells me that I should use an 'approved' lens!

I can happily report that I got my D800e back this Monday from Nikon in Califorina. They repaired the 10 pin without any question, I also asked them to check the left focus and the RO stated that they checked and adjusted the focus. All repairs under warranty. Of course I had to pay for shipping and insurance to Nikon. the bad news is they send the camera back without insurance. :(

This issue just rots my socks, to spend this kind of money on a camera and have it fail in less than a month, the worse part is Nikon won't issue a recall so at this time we are at their mercy at what cause they arrive at......warranty repair or......impact damage. I hear that they try for the impact damage first, unless you hold fast against that, the problem with that is, they hold all the cards. I posted on another forum last night and I was informed that if you are in Britain the retailer is obliged to replace the camera and they deal with Nikon unfortunately it is not the way here in the good ole USA, we have to deal with Nikon.

My 800e has a broken 10 pin socket just like the photo above.

Hello new to the forum joined to add to the list of unfortunate's who has purchased a D800E only to have the 10 pin socket come loose in the socket after (3) short weeks of ownership. I use(d) the remote quite a bit as I have been doing a lot of night shooting with all the Christmas lights and displays of late. I have contacted the retailer (Gary Camera of Merrillville IN) who has told me that I need to contact Nikon. These guys were great in the front end, but I am sure disappointed with them now, I don't know who to be more disappointed with, Nikon or Gary Camera! Anyway I am about to send my camera into Nikon for evaluation "as they put it" I hope that they replace it as opposed to fix it, as I don't think a camera this new should experience this kind of failure. I will let you all know how it goes in the future, I imagine 3-4 weeks.

In the meantime I will have to use my stand-by 700

I had dust on my Nikon D600 after less than 1000 shots and before I ever even changed the lens. Something is up with Nikon and dust. Either a shutter design or something else. I even had 2 hot pixels and ended up returning. I'll probably end up re-buying but i'm worried about these issues. Even the reviews are pointing them out:

Shoot an exposure of a plain white sheet of paper, camera focus at infinity, paper at about two feet. In post processing, increase contrast to full and then post image. This should show the problem more clearly than a 10 second exposure.

Now that we are in the correct thread...just a little note. Unless I am in an extremely dirty venue, I do not clean lenses. Some have never been cleaned in several years except to possibly blow dust off. And the rear element is never touched unless some unfortunate event occurs and a piece of dirt or smudge gets on the glass.

The pro Nikon bodies do seem to have a tendency to accumulate oil spots. After about 10,000 clicks I cleaned my D4 sensor which had over 70 oil spots, by count, and I have not had another in the past 7,000 clicks.

And, Sary, welcome to NRF. Maybe you could post a photo showing the spot..... or what a while and see if more accumulate.

I just got my D800e a week ago. Yesterday I took it out and used the 10-pin connector for the first time. Today I went to plug into it again and found it was broken just like the others talked about in this thread - pushed down and off center. I'm going to send it back to the retailer, but truthfully, I'm fearful the next one won't last any better. I will definitely be more careful with it and probably won't tighten the ring. Having a 10-pin on the front instead of a connection port inside the side flap door was a big part of my decision to get the D800 over the D600. What a big disappointment and such a sinking feeling to know my new baby is broken already.

There has been great advice already posted here. As someone who a couple of months ago went through exactly the dilemma you are now, here's my $0.02.

- I ended up sticking with Canon, and buying a 5dMkIII. After 2 months, I am increasingly happy with my decision. For what it's worth, Popular Photography just awarded the 5DMkIII its Camera of the Year for 2012, and their reasoning is pretty sound. If I had made the switch - which would've hurt financially - I'm sure I would now be regretting the move.

- That said, I enjoyed my time playing with Nikons. Teething issues notwithstanding, there's a lot for Nikkor owners to feel excited about.

- Unless you are a professional photographer who has a very very specific need for something the D800 or 5D does better, and this is going to make you more money, switching systems is pretty dumb.
