I just purchased a Nikon d5100 from Besy buy and along with it a new 16gb sandisck sdhc card. when I turned it on today..it said that there was no sd card installed..when in fact it was there... i had taken some photos and some videos..just trying to get the feel of the new camera..but i cant get any of them to pull up. I have been reading about this issue and my firmware is already up to date. Has anyone had this issue with up top date firmware? I will get e new card and try it..any reccomendations. The card is also not readable in my laptop either..it could be the card..but i could preview my pictures in the camera at one time..now it insists that there is no card installed.

I threw in the towel and sent my 13 month old black picture taking D5100 in to Nikon for repairs. I cited the posts in this thread and they gave me 20% off the repair price. If anyone is looking into batch production issues, my serial # is 3017074.

The repair consisted of replacing the shutter mechanism, shutter curtain blade and power pcb. They also cleaned it, upgraded the firmware, adjusted the auto focus mechanism and mirror angle. The camera is now working normally. Total cost after the 20% complimentary discount and including shipping and taxes was $136.82.

I do not think I have ever shot faster than 1/1500 sec... never could figure why, but then maybe that is why some of my images are not so good....??

...and @ Gabbott66...if you shoot the sun directly with a long lens, use the ND filter on the front of the lens. The long telephotos lenses have a filter slot in the rear and if pointed at the sun the heat build up inside the lens can cook it if not extremely careful.

I use a filter which blocks 99.999% of the light when aimed at the sun which can be obtained from Thousand Oaks Optical in Kingman, Arizona

What are the chances the D5200 will have 1/8000th sec max shutter speed? None if the spec on the NR blog is correct. But like everybody else says, it doesn't matter, you don't need it for macro as camera shake/missed focus are the main reasons for blurring.

Agreed with all above on how rarely 1/8000sec winds up being utilized... only shooting wide open with wide aperture lenses on bright days. Shoot, I had to go back over a year, to before I shot anything in RAW format to find things I knew I used even 1/4000sec to shoot. And the hummingbirds aren't quite frozen yet, but they are darned fast!

Even with a fast macro lens, I don't think 1/4000sec shutter will come up. I don't think I have anything new to add that hasn't already been said, so I won't beat a dead horse. :)

There are only two times I have ever used shutter speeds higher than 1/4000: (1) impulsively taking pictures of the sun behind some thin clouds from the passenger seat of a car moving at 75 mph; and (2) trying to take pictures of the Sun during the transit of Venus back in June.

A couple of shots in situation #1 turned out OK. Situation #2 got a lot better when I upgraded from a 4-stop ND filter to a 9-stop ND filter - and with the darker filter my shutter speeds dropped dramatically.

You'd really need the perfect storm of intensely bright light, camera shake and a subject in motion at high speeds before thinking about speeds higher than 1/4000th.

EDIT: I take scenario #1 back, I just looked at the photos from that trip and I was using my D40x, with a max 1/4000 shutter speed. The photos turned out awfully sharp, though, at 1/3200 to 1/4000, even from a car moving at highway speed. For example, look at this shot, with no sharpening added:

(The downsampling to 800 pixels wide hurts the perceived sharpness. Full res is pretty sharp. D40x, 28mm, f/5.6, ISO 800, 1/3200)

Is there an error message? If so, consult the manual, p 72 and see if this is the problem. Also, if you have changed out the battery with the switch on, or changed lenses, or memory cards, this needs to be known.

If the camera simply will not power up and the battery is fully charged, it most likely needs to go back to Nikon.

Have you tried a fresh battery? Factory reset? Also, check the contacts on the camera body inside the lens flange for any damage or crud.

Edit: on second thought, if it all works in live view, it's not a crud on the contacts problem. Do try the reset and pulling the battery.

So I've had my D5100 close to a year, and it suddenly stopped auto focusing when shooting through the viewfinder. However, if I switch to live view the AF works just fine, so obviously everything is setup for AF. This incident occurs in every shooting mode, with every lens I have (standard 18-55 & 70-300, also 18-200). I'd appreciate any input or knowledge about this problem. Thanks!

I agree with what has been said before. I can't really think of a need for a shutter speed of 1/8000. Most normal shots wouldn't require more than 1/1000, super fast stuff perhaps 1/2000. Perhaps if you feel you need something faster, it might be better to think of another way of addressing the problem.

I have been getting several problems...never thought to have them sent to repair but wish I had because the warranty just ran out. Everyone told me my technique must be bad but then I tested a pro-quality 70-200 and images were not focused as they were in the viewfinder. 20 years of experience sports and other, and this is the results upon experimentation: Images are totally crisp, although rotated, when I put my old film lenses on the camera...however I must alter the focus slightly blurry to get them crisp in the recording. No matter which lens new or old, images are rotated slightly. I thought the distance to sensor had slightly wrong distance to sensor, which would make autofocus impossible and manual focus would require my compensating. Hard to explain to a client in the moment that I have to re-do shots! I didn't realize the gravity of the situation for a while. Now I'm finding other people having "alignment" issues...otherwise a great camera but needs repair to this quality control or design issue, or the garbage can. Honestly, I've been using this camera body for a year and I don't think it was ever accurate, now that I've been testing other brands & models to replace it with.

I was taking photos and after about photo #271 in my session this happened. Several black ones and no more photos afterwards. I've tried resetting the camera, the shutter and other possible fixes listed here including a different memory card, lens etc. Nothing! it
I contacted the seller (B&H) but 90 day warranty has expired and so basically I can send it them to them but have to pay to have it fixed. This sucks as I've had the camera for 5 months, had a D50 and before that many film Nikons and never had a major problem. I'm currrently job hunting, so don't have extra $ and the leaves (Aspens) are already turning here and not to mention other things I like to photograph. I'm very unhappy as cameras cost a lot on my budget as a counselor and not to mention I upgraded from the D50 because the photo quality has improved a lot and had hoped to keep the D5100 for many years and have it to be a reliable camera as I take very good care of my equipment.
