You can already have your coffee in one of the many Nikon lens mugs. Now you can also listen to music from this new Nikon lens speaker. This "musical" Nikkor AF-S 55-200mm lens can play tunes from a cell phone or computer line-in connection and supports also Micro SD/TF memory card. It has a built-in battery that is charged via the USB line and can play for 3-4 hours.

The prices vary between $20 and $40 - see all available eBay listings. There is even a "grey version lens":

Nikon cameras at WestLicht Photographica Auction

Sorry, I forgot to include this material in my weekly links post:

During the exclusive Westilicht auction that took place on December 4th, two Nikon cameras made it to the top 3 most expensive cameras sold - a Nikon F3 NASA from 1986 and a Nikon S2-E both sold for 168,000EUR (around 225,000 USD). The first and second place were of course held by Leica cameras - somebody actually paid 402,000 EUR (around 537,000USD) for a Leica MP camera and this is a lot, even for Leica's standards (the most expensive Leica camera ever sold).

If you are adventurous, there is currently a Nikon F3 NASA for sale on eBay for 22,500 USD.

FYI: Nikon S2 rangefinders can be found for few hundred dollars on eBay. More info on Nikon S rangefinders can be found here and here.

Nikon S2-E Black Paint:

"One of the most important Nikon RF cameras ever offered for sale. The S2-E was the first Nikon with electric motor drive and also the most early 35mm post-war camera with electric motor drive (already before Leica MP-2). Only 4-5 cameras (out of 10-15 produced) are known to exist. This is the most complete outfit in wonderful condition. The black paint camera comes with the matching black paint aluminium Nikkor-S.C 1.4/5cm no.365419, the original motor drive no.94063 (all with boxes with matching numbers), extremely rare sardine battery back, papers and guarantee cards, caps, black everready case, grey relay box, soft release and other accessories - this outfit is published in 'The Complete Nikon Rangefinder System' by Robert R. Rotoloni on page 110-115. ex collection Tad Sato."

Nikon F3 NASA 250:

"Space Shuttle' version of F3 with magazine back for 250 exposures (no.1015) combined with motor drive (no.1004), different details modified for use in outer space, only approx. 19 of these very special cameras were made for NASA around 1986, some were lost in space, in near mint original condition"

Did you notice the "some were lost in space" part?

What is “Nikon Q750″?

An internal message was distributed to all Best Buy stores indicating that the delivery dates for three different products is to be determined. One of those product was labeled as "Nikon Q750":

"The delivery date is to be determined for the:

Nikon S8100

Canon 60D

Nikon Q750"

I am 100% positive that this message is authentic and was sent out on October 15th. What I don't know is what "Nikon Q750" stands for - it could be a typo, an internal code, a continuation of the "Nikon Q" hoax from last month, or an indication of a new upcoming product from Nikon mistakenly included on that list.

Nikkors on a train

Next time you take a train in Switzerland and go through a tunnel, you can rest assured that the inside walls are in perfect shape thanks to.... five fisheye Nikkor lenses:

This piece of fascinating technology is the front of the diagnostic vehicle for rail infrastructure of the Swiss Federal Railways, which was part of the Innotrans - the international trade fair for rail transportation that took place last week in Berlin, Germany:

Inside the housing, there are five cameras equipped with Nikon DX AF Fisheye-Nikkor 10.5mm f/2.8G ED lenses. The view of the cameras is reflected sideways by 90 degrees using five mirrors mounted on the backside of the front cover. The images from all five cameras are then stitched together into a ring shaped view of the surrounding and is captured as a video stream. Additionally, a 3D-wireframe model is generated in real-time and recorded alongside with the video (it records the closest distance to a object from the apparatus).

The system is used to check the clearance of the track in an automated way - it can detect and document even the smallest deformation in tunnel walls, while driving at full speed. For example: the system has a longitudinal resolution of 7cm (2 3/4 in.) at 200 km/h (125 mph), better at slower speeds, and it can indentify a variety of defects automatically.

Limited Edition, White Nikon – will we ever see one?

Here is a good way for Nikon to start making some extra money - start selling all white, limited edition Nikon cameras for 40% price premium. Pentax did it few months ago and Leica is charging almost double for its limited edition all-white Leica M8.

And when there, why stop with white - I am sure there will be buyers for this (red), this (camouflage) and Bruce Lee version Nikon D3.

Nikon Fabre Photo EX microscope may not be available in the US

The Nikon Fabre Photo EX microscope (with DSLR compatibility) was announced over a month ago in Japan and there is still no word from Nikon US/Europe. I contacted Nikon US and it seems that this product will be available only in Japan. I also email Nikon support, but have not received an answer yet.

Do you remember the Nikon Media Port UP300x video headset? If you want to find out more about this weird product, Akihabaranews just published a review:

"The UP300 Series is an interesting concept and a really high-end product. Definitely not made for everyone, don't expect to get the perfect PMP player experience, but once you understand its limitation the UP300 can be very useful… Anyone can find a use for it if they really think a bit about it. I really like the idea of getting guitar lessons with video, but I am sure you could find other ideas on how to use it. I also love the Network concept, it would be great to get information in department stores and waiting areas… Due to UP300 limitations, I'm not sure many companies will provide services and info for it."

What's the target audience for this thing? I don't think Nikon will ever make money from this product.

Nikon is co-funding a 3D R&D project in Japan
