Nikon D700 firmware update v1.03, ViewNX v2.3.2 released

The previously reported firmware update 1.03 for Nikon D700 is now official. The new A1.03, B1.02 version contains only one fix:

An issue that, in some very rare cases, caused images to be extremely under-exposed has been resolved.

Nikon also released ViewNX 2.3.2 with only one fix:

When printing images with Print As: in the Printer Setup dialogue box set to Full Page and the Print Information box checked, images were printed with excessive margins, regardless of the options selected for printing in the Advanced Print Information Settings dialogue box. This issue has been resolved.

Nikon Capture NX 2.3.2 and NEF Codec 1.14.0 released

Nikon released v2.3.2 of Capture NX and NEF codec v1.14.0 with added support for the new D3200 camera.

The complete list of modifications in the Capture NX version:

Modifications that apply to both the Windows and Macintosh versions: support for RAW images captured with the D3200 has been added.
Additional modifications to the Windows version: when images captured with the camera’s Auto distortion control function enabled were opened or edited, Capture NX 2 sometimes quit unexpectedly. This issue has been resolved.
Additional modifications to the Macintosh version: when NEF files edited using the unsharp mask function and then saved were later opened, or copied and opened, the images sometimes appeared corrupted. This issue has been resolved.

New Nikon Camera Control open source project

I noticed this post on the NikonRumors Forum - a reader is developing an open source Nikon Camera Control software. Please note that this project is at its early stage and could have bugs or not be compatible with all Nikon DSLR cameras. The current features are:

Hacked: time limit during video recording now removed for the Nikon D3100/D5100/D7000

In addition to the Nikon D3100 and D5100, the Nikon Hacker team was able to remove the time limit restriction during video recording also for the D7000. The new firmware was tested and is now released - it allows for 25-30 minutes uninterrupted video files (up to 4GB in file size). For instruction and download links, check this post. Please note that this is not an official firmware update from Nikon - use at your own risk.

Adobe Lightroom 4 released with Nikon D4, D800, D800E, 85mm f/1.8 support

Adobe released Adobe Lightroom 4 which now supports Nikon D4, D800 and D800E cameras.

The price of a full version is $149.00, the upgrade costs $79, the student and teacher edition also costs $79.

Lightroom 4 also includes new moiré local adjustment controls (similar to noise reduction and white balance) which could be helpful if you are planning to get the Nikon D800E.

Nikon Capture NX 2.3.1 is out

Today Nikon released v2.3.1 of Capture NX ($130). You must install version 2.3.0 before proceeding with version 2.3.1. The new Capture NX version has D4 support and several bugs fixed.

List of changes in Capture NX 2.3.1:

Support for RAW images captured with the D4 has been added.

Extra High 1 (Extra High) and Extra High 2 items have been added to the Active D-Lighting pulldown menu under Camera Settings in the Develop section of the Edit List.

Event ID can now be displayed under File Info 2 in the File & Camera Information section of the Metadata palette for images captured by, and to which IPTC information has been added using the IPTC item in the camera’s setup menu, the D4.

Display format for the following items in the Edit List has been modified.

Active D-Lighting under Camera Settings in the Develop section.

Color Moiré Reduction under Camera & Lens Corrections in the Develop section

An issue that prevented sufficient application of vignette control enhancement for RAW (NEF) images captured with the Nikon 1 V1 and Nikon 1 J1 with A firmware Ver. 1.10 or 1.11 and B firmware Ver. 1.10 installed has been resolved.

An issue that prevented accurate display of lens information in the Metadata palette for images captured with the Nikon 1 V1 or Nikon 1 J1 and a 1 NIKKOR lens has been resolved.

When certain images with GPS information attached were saved in JPEG format, Capture NX 2 sometimes quit responding. This issue has been resolved.

64-bit Nikon ViewNX v2.3.0 and Wireless Transmitter Utility v1.3.0 released

Today Nikon released new versions of ViewNX (v2.3.0) and Wireless Transmitter Utility (1.3.0). Some of the ViewNX changes are added support for Nikon D800, D4 and 64-bit support.

Modifications made in View NX3.2.0:

Support for the D800 and D800E has been added.

Save and Save As… items have been added to the File menu.

Original image files (original format, size, resolution, etc.) can now be sent as e-mail attachments from ViewNX 2 using the Email function.

A Margins function has been added to Index Print settings in the Print dialog.

Slideshows were sometimes not displayed properly when run with Auto-Hide Slide Controls selected for Toolbars in the slideshow Settings Dialog. This issue has been resolved. (64-bit version of ViewNX 2 only.)

Additional modifications to the Windows version:

ViewNX 2 and the Picture Control Utility now function as native 64-bit applications under 64-bit versions of Windows 7 and Windows Vista.

When the decimal symbol used by the OS was set to anything other than a period (.) or comma (,) from the Regional and Language Options in the operating system’s Control Panel, position information was not correctly displayed. This issue has been resolved.

An issue that prevented editing of information in the Metadata palette for images saved to Windows shared folders has been resolved.

An issue that prevented smooth playback of Motion Snapshot files with some systems has been resolved.

Additional modifications to the Macintosh version:

ViewNX 2, the Picture Control Utility, and Nikon Transfer 2 now function as native 64-bit applications under Mac OS X versions 10.6 and 10.7.

Modifications made in Wireless Transmitter Utility (1.3.0):

The name of the software has been changed from WT-4 Setup Utility to Wireless Transmitter Utility.

The icon used by the software has been changed.

Support for the Wireless Transmitter WT-5 has been added.

Support for the D4 has been added.

Camera network profiles can now be saved on the computer. In addition, network profiles (settings files) saved to the computer can be loaded to a camera using the Load settings file option.

Additional modifications to the Macintosh version

Support for Mac OS X version 10.7 has been added.

However, Print mode for WT-4 cannot be used.

Support for Mac OS X version 10.4 has been eliminated.

The just released new firmware version 1.11 for Nikon 1 includes the following fixes (V1, J1 download links):

An issue that sometimes caused images captured using the Speedlight SB-N5 to be over-exposed has been resolved

When switching from framing photos in the monitor to using the electronic viewfinder, or vice versa, with focus mode set to MF (manual focus) and the display zoomed in, the camera sometimes did not function properly. This issue has been resolved (apply only to Nikon V1)

Compatibility issues with NIK Color Efex Pro after installing Nikon Capture NX2 v2.3.0

Several readers reported issues with their NIK Color Efex Pro software after installing the latest version 2.3.0 of Nikon Capture NX. The new Color Efex Pro 4 will not work with Capture NX v2.3.0 (source):

Does Color Efex Pro 4 work in Capture NX 2?

The Capture NX 2 software from Nikon does not support Nik Software's new Color Efex Pro 4 plug-in. Color Efex Pro 4 is built on an entirely new and powerful framework and thus requires certain functions of the plug-in architecture of the host application that are not currently present in Captures NX 2.

If you are a current Color Efex Pro 3.0 customer, you can of course continue to enjoy the benefits of that software with Capture NX 2.

Regarding plans to make the two products work together, the effort to update Color Efex Pro 4 to function within Capture NX 2 relies on Nikon's future plans and development for their photo editing software. Nik Software is not privy to those plans.

NIK Software is working on a solution to fix the compatibility issue with older Color Efex Pro 3 version. Here is an email sent from Nik Software support team to a reader (Google translation):

Color Efex Pro 3 is fully compatible with Nikon Capture NX 2 up to version 2.2.8. Capture NX 2, version 2.3, is a native 64-bit / 32-bit application, the Color Efex Pro 3 in 32-bit compatible mode.

Nik Software's development team checked with the highest priority requirements regarding the development of an appropriate technical adjustment of Color Efex Pro 3.0.

There are no plans to modify Color Efex Pro 4 to be compatible with Nikon Capture NX2 because the software architecture of these applications are too different.

On Mac OS, it is possible to install NX 2 2.3 in either 32 - or use 64-bit mode. If Color Efex Pro 3.0 for Capture NX 2 is installed, it will be in 32-bitmode from Capture NX 2 to be visible and usable, while Color Efex Pro 3.0 for Capture NX 2 in 64-bit mode is not displayed.

For switching the mode exit Capture NX 2, go to the Finder on the Capture NX 2 program icon, select "information" in the Finder menu"File" or cmd + "i" and then put the check mark from "In the 32 - open-bitmode. "With the next start Capture NX 2 will start in 32-bit mode and Color Efex Pro 3.0 for Capture NX 2 is available again.

Nikon Capture NX 2.3.0 (64-bit) and View NX 2.2.5 released today

The previous rumors about a 64 bit support in Capture NX materialize today with the new version 2.3.0. Nikon also released ViewNX v2.2.5.

What's new in Capture NX 2.3.0:

Lens information is now displayed in the Metadata palette for images captured with the Nikon 1 V1 or Nikon 1 J1 using the Mount Adapter FT1 and a CPU lens.
Support for images captured with the Nikon 1 V1 and Nikon 1 J1 using the Mount Adapter FT1 has been added.
An Astro Noise Reduction option has been added to Noise Reduction in the Camera Settings portion of the Develop section in the Edit List palette. This option reduces the randomly spaced bright pixels that occur in images of stars captured with long exposures.
An Auto2 option has been added to New WB under White Balance in the Camera Settings portion of the Develop section in the Edit List palette. This option is available with RAW images taken with the COOLPIX P7100. When white balance is changed to Auto2 and a settings file saved, a white balance setting of Recorded Value will be applied if the settings file is used on a RAW image that does not support the Auto2 white balance setting.
When Set Gray Point was selected from White Balance in the Camera Settings portion of the Develop section in the Edit List palette, and the image clicked to specify a portion to use as the grey point, the point selected was sometimes not accurately reflected in the resulting white balance if the image had first been rotated. This issue has been resolved.

Additional modifications to the Windows version:

This software now operates as a native 64-bit application under the 64-bit versions of Windows 7 and Windows Vista.
An Embed Preview When Saving NEF/NRW item with Thumbnail and Preview and Thumbnail only options has been added to the General panel of the Preferences accessed from the Edit menu. In addition, preview images can later be added to NEF/NRW files saved without embedding them using the new Update Preview option in the Browser palette context menu and File menu.
The default setting for the Use Image Cache option in the Cache Settings panel of the Preferences, accessed from the Edit menu, has been changed to off (not checked). When Capture NX 2 Ver. 2.3.0 is installed with the Use Image Cache option enabled (checked) with the previous version of Capture NX 2, Use Image Cache will be disabled (unchecked) and cached data will be deleted.
An issue that resulted in inconsistent display of images in the Browser palette and images inside the folder selected in the Folders palette has been resolved.
When a batch process was run for images captured with simultaneous RAW + JPEG recording by selecting Run Batch Process from the Batch menu with a new naming convention applied to the RAW and JPEG images, new files were not always created for the selected images. This issue has been resolved.
An issue that caused the Folders, Browser, and Metadata palettes to be shifted down when Windows was set to display the taskbar at the top of the desktop has been resolved.
When Set as Default Printer was applied to some printers with Windows, a Capture NX 2 stops working error message was displayed when Capture NX 2 was exited. This issue has been resolved.
When tone curves were edited using Adjust menu>Light>Levels & Curves, Adjust menu>Color>LCH, or Quick Fix in the Develop section of the Edit List palette, positions of anchor points changed unexpectedly. This issue has been resolved.

Additional modifications to the Macintosh version

This software now operates as a native 64-bit application under Mac OS.

An issue that prevented display of Exposure mode in the Metadata palette for images captured underwater in Easy Auto mode with the COOLPIX AW100/AW100s has been resolved.
An Event box has been added under Description in the Metadata palette.
Lens information is now displayed in the Metadata palette for images captured with the Nikon 1 V1 or Nikon 1 J1 using the Mount Adapter FT1 and a CPU lens.

Additional modifications to the Macintosh version:

Support for Mac OS X version 10.7 has been added.

Additional modifications to the Windows version:

An issue that prevented the editing of metadata, application of labels and/or ratings, or image rotation on some systems has been resolved.

Nikon firmware decrypted

Nikon D5100 motherboard

Nikon firmware has been decrypted by Simeon Pilgrim (with the help of Vitaliy Kiselev - the person who hacked the Panasonic GH2 firmware). The decryption worked on D5100 and D7000 and is currently being tested on higher end models.

The decryption itself doesn't mean much at that point, but it may offer some neat "adjustments" in the future.

New version 2.3 of Capture NX ($129.95) is ready to be released and it will have 64-bit support. I believe this version will add support also for new, unreleased Nikon camera(s), which explains why it is not available yet.

The latest Capture NX version is 2.2.8.

Do no expect Capture NX3 to be released any time soon.

Nikon recently added 64-bit support to their NEF codec.

New Nikon iPhone/iPad apps

The rumor mill is grinding to a halt, which probably means that Nikon is done for this year. We still have to watch the first week of December, but as of today I am not aware of any scheduled press events. To keep you entertained, I have several guest posts and giveaways scheduled for the next few weeks.

Today Nikon released a new iPhone/iPad app called iP-PJ Transfer that will allow to project content from your iOS device to the Coolpix 1200pj camera (see full press release at the bottom of this post):

Using the iP-PJ Transfer app on an iPhone 4 or any other compatible Apple product will enable the projection of various content stored on the aforementioned via the COOLPIX S1200pj. Until now, content that could be projected using an iPhone 4, etc. and the COOLPIX S1200pj was limited to slideshows and the streaming of YouTube™ content but the iP-PJ enables projection of a variety of content such as the following:

1) Photos
2) Projection of websites being browsed within the iP-PJ Transfer. Search engines can be used for bookmarking websites.
3) Document files: Projection is enabled for document files such as Microsoft Word, Excel, and PowerPoint as well as Adobe PDF.

While searching itunes, I came acros few other Nikon apps I did not see before:

Nikon Manual Viewer (iPod and iPhone compatible): Nikon Manual Viewer is a viewer app for iPhones and iPads that allows users to download and view user’s manuals and reference manuals for Nikon digital cameras. Manuals that have been downloaded can be viewed off-line, allowing users to refer to them at any time and any place.

Nikon 1 Official Catalogue (iPad only): This “Nikon 1 Official Catalog” application not only helps you learn more about the new features of these products such as Motion Snapshot and Smart Photo Selector, but also allows you to enjoy a variety of photos and movies that have been shot using the Nikon 1 digital camera system.

Nikon NEF Codec version 1.12.0 released

The just released Nikon NEF codec version 1.12.0 has added support for Nikon 1 and 64-bit Windows computers:

Supports NEF (RAW) images taken with the Nikon 1 J1, Nikon 1 V1.
Supports 64-bit versions of Windows Vista and Windows 7.
If thumbnails for NEF files fail to display correctly in the Photo Gallery or Photo Viewer for 64-bit editions of Windows Vista and Windows 7, perform a disk clean-up as described below.

ViewNX 2.2.3

Nikon interested in buying webOS from HP?

According to this post by SlashGear, webOS is not dead yet and there is interest from several companies, including Nikon, to buy the mobile operating system from HP:

It also continues the confusion as to what HP plans to do with webOS, which it had initially insisted that it would continue to support and develop. But the company is looking more likely to sell the unit and has been in talks with HTC, LG, Nikon, and Amazon as potential buyers of the software platform.
