Several readers reported issues with their NIK Color Efex Pro software after installing the latest version 2.3.0 of Nikon Capture NX. The new Color Efex Pro 4 will not work with Capture NX v2.3.0 (source):

Does Color Efex Pro 4 work in Capture NX 2?

The Capture NX 2 software from Nikon does not support Nik Software's new Color Efex Pro 4 plug-in. Color Efex Pro 4 is built on an entirely new and powerful framework and thus requires certain functions of the plug-in architecture of the host application that are not currently present in Captures NX 2.

If you are a current Color Efex Pro 3.0 customer, you can of course continue to enjoy the benefits of that software with Capture NX 2.

Regarding plans to make the two products work together, the effort to update Color Efex Pro 4 to function within Capture NX 2 relies on Nikon's future plans and development for their photo editing software. Nik Software is not privy to those plans.

NIK Software is working on a solution to fix the compatibility issue with older Color Efex Pro 3 version. Here is an email sent from Nik Software support team to a reader (Google translation):

Color Efex Pro 3 is fully compatible with Nikon Capture NX 2 up to version 2.2.8. Capture NX 2, version 2.3, is a native 64-bit / 32-bit application, the Color Efex Pro 3 in 32-bit compatible mode.

Nik Software's development team checked with the highest priority requirements regarding the development of an appropriate technical adjustment of Color Efex Pro 3.0.

There are no plans to modify Color Efex Pro 4 to be compatible with Nikon Capture NX2 because the software architecture of these applications are too different.

On Mac OS, it is possible to install NX 2 2.3 in either 32 - or use 64-bit mode. If Color Efex Pro 3.0 for Capture NX 2 is installed, it will be in 32-bitmode from Capture NX 2 to be visible and usable, while Color Efex Pro 3.0 for Capture NX 2 in 64-bit mode is not displayed.

For switching the mode exit Capture NX 2, go to the Finder on the Capture NX 2 program icon, select "information" in the Finder menu"File" or cmd + "i" and then put the check mark from "In the 32 - open-bitmode. "With the next start Capture NX 2 will start in 32-bit mode and Color Efex Pro 3.0 for Capture NX 2 is available again.

The previous rumors about a 64 bit support in Capture NX materialize today with the new version 2.3.0. Nikon also released ViewNX v2.2.5.

What's new in Capture NX 2.3.0:

Lens information is now displayed in the Metadata palette for images captured with the Nikon 1 V1 or Nikon 1 J1 using the Mount Adapter FT1 and a CPU lens.

Support for images captured with the Nikon 1 V1 and Nikon 1 J1 using the Mount Adapter FT1 has been added.

An Astro Noise Reduction option has been added to Noise Reduction in the Camera Settings portion of the Develop section in the Edit List palette. This option reduces the randomly spaced bright pixels that occur in images of stars captured with long exposures.

An Auto2 option has been added to New WB under White Balance in the Camera Settings portion of the Develop section in the Edit List palette. This option is available with RAW images taken with the COOLPIX P7100. When white balance is changed to Auto2 and a settings file saved, a white balance setting of Recorded Value will be applied if the settings file is used on a RAW image that does not support the Auto2 white balance setting.

When Set Gray Point was selected from White Balance in the Camera Settings portion of the Develop section in the Edit List palette, and the image clicked to specify a portion to use as the grey point, the point selected was sometimes not accurately reflected in the resulting white balance if the image had first been rotated. This issue has been resolved.

Additional modifications to the Windows version:

This software now operates as a native 64-bit application under the 64-bit versions of Windows 7 and Windows Vista.

An Embed Preview When Saving NEF/NRW item with Thumbnail and Preview and Thumbnail only options has been added to the General panel of the Preferences accessed from the Edit menu. In addition, preview images can later be added to NEF/NRW files saved without embedding them using the new Update Preview option in the Browser palette context menu and File menu.

The default setting for the Use Image Cache option in the Cache Settings panel of the Preferences, accessed from the Edit menu, has been changed to off (not checked). When Capture NX 2 Ver. 2.3.0 is installed with the Use Image Cache option enabled (checked) with the previous version of Capture NX 2, Use Image Cache will be disabled (unchecked) and cached data will be deleted.

An issue that resulted in inconsistent display of images in the Browser palette and images inside the folder selected in the Folders palette has been resolved.

When a batch process was run for images captured with simultaneous RAW + JPEG recording by selecting Run Batch Process from the Batch menu with a new naming convention applied to the RAW and JPEG images, new files were not always created for the selected images. This issue has been resolved.

An issue that caused the Folders, Browser, and Metadata palettes to be shifted down when Windows was set to display the taskbar at the top of the desktop has been resolved.

When Set as Default Printer was applied to some printers with Windows, a Capture NX 2 stops working error message was displayed when Capture NX 2 was exited. This issue has been resolved.

When tone curves were edited using Adjust menu>Light>Levels & Curves, Adjust menu>Color>LCH, or Quick Fix in the Develop section of the Edit List palette, positions of anchor points changed unexpectedly. This issue has been resolved.

Additional modifications to the Macintosh version

This software now operates as a native 64-bit application under Mac OS.

An Embed Preview When Saving NEF/NRW item with Thumbnail and Preview and Thumbnail only options has been added to the General panel of the Preferences accessed from the Capture NX 2 menu. In addition, preview images can later be added to NEF/NRW files saved without embedding them using the new Update Preview option in the Browser palette context menu and File menu.

The default setting for the Use Image Cache option in the Cache Settings panel of the Preferences, accessed from the Capture NX 2 menu, has been changed to off (not checked). When Capture NX 2 Ver. 2.3.0 is installed with the Use Image Cache option enabled (checked) with the previous version of Capture NX 2, Use Image Cache will be disabled (unchecked) and cached data will be deleted.

When the selection brush was used to edit an image with the image window displayed at a large size (1980 × 1080, 1512 × 1008, etc.), Capture NX 2 sometimes quit unexpected. This issue has been resolved.

What's new in ViewNX 2.2.5:

Auto 2 is now available for selection from the list of White Balance settings in the Adjustments palette for RAW images captured with the COOLPIX P7100.

An issue that prevented display of Exposure mode in the Metadata palette for images captured underwater in Easy Auto mode with the COOLPIX AW100/AW100s has been resolved.

An Event box has been added under Description in the Metadata palette.

Press release: Nikon Launches iP-PJ Transfer App for iPad, iPhone & iPod touch

Supports The New COOLPIX 1200pj with Built-In Projector Allowing Users to Project Content from iOS Devices

Melville, N.Y., November 16, 2011 – Nikon Inc. has announced the release of the iP-PJ Transfer App for iPad, iPhone and iPod touch1, now available on the App Store. The app enables users to project content stored on an iPhone or iPod touch using the new COOLPIX S1200pj with built-in projector.

The iP-PJ Transfer App lets users easily project still images in thumbnail and full-frame displays, business documents created with common presentation tools and websites2 from their iPhone or iPod touch3. Whether sharing with friends and family or business colleagues, the iP-PJ Transfer App gives users quicker access to more content and lets them share it in a unique way with the COOLPIX 1200pj.

“With the introduction of the COOLPIX S1200pj, Nikon has delivered an easier way for consumers to share their photos and movies,” said Sharon Henley, Nikon’s senior manager of product lifecycle control. “Now, with the addition of the iP-PJ Transfer App, the COOLPIX S1200pj can project content straight from a user's iPad, iPhone or iPod touch.”

The COOLPIX S1200pj, Nikon’s third projector-equipped model, offers a 40% increase in projection brightness over its immediate predecessor and projects vivid images up to 60 inches.

The iP-PJ Transfer App is available for free from the App Store on iPad, iPhone or iPod touch or at www.itunes.com/appstore.

According to this post by SlashGear, webOS is not dead yet and there is interest from several companies, including Nikon, to buy the mobile operating system from HP:

It also continues the confusion as to what HP plans to do with webOS, which it had initially insisted that it would continue to support and develop. But the company is looking more likely to sell the unit and has been in talks with HTC, LG, Nikon, and Amazon as potential buyers of the software platform.

More on webOS from Wikipedia:

HP webOS is a mobile operating system based on a Linux kernel, initially developed by Palm, which was later acquired by Hewlett-Packard.Palm, HP, and most commentators and sources write the name webOS, as shown in the adjacent logo, and in HP resources, rather than "WebOS".

webOS was introduced by Palm in January 2009. Various versions of webOS have been featured on several devices, including Pre, Pixi, and Veer phones and the HP Touchpad tablet. However, on August 18, 2011, HP announced that it would discontinue production of all webOS related hardware devices. HP is presently considering licensing webOS software to other manufacturers for placement on their hardware devices.

In addition to supporting playback of data recorded using the Motion Snapshot* function, which offers a new form of imaging expression and has been built into Nikon’s new Nikon 1, Advanced Camera with Interchangeable Lens, my Picturetown Pad also supports book view and a map view that utilizes information recorded with cameras equipped with a GPS function. What's more users can enjoy using my Picturetown with their iPads and iPhones with greater convenience through collaboration with Facebook and Twitter.

*The Motion Snapshot function records a still image and roughly a second of movie footage beginning before and ending after the time the shutter-release button was pressed. The 2.5-seconds worth of movie footage recorded in Motion Snapshot mode is played back in slow motion for a total playback time of 10 seconds that includes the still image and original background music for an impressive playback experience.
The new Nikon 1, Advance Camera with Interchangeable Lens just released by Nikon respond to the latest needs of the digital generation. Nikon will continue to offer fun, new forms of imaging expression with features such as those that combine still images and movie footage, and also continue to expand its services to offer users more ways to share their digital images.

Primary my Picturetown Pad features

Convenient viewing of photos and movies

The user interface optimized for the iPad and iPhone display allows users to view photos and movies uploaded to my Picturetown with ease and comfort. As images are cached as they are viewed, display is much faster when they are viewed again at a later time. Users can also create albums and change the manner in which images are sorted using simple touch operations.

Playback of Motion Snapshot data

Data recorded using the new Motion Snapshot function built into Nikon’s new Nikon 1 Advanced Camera with Interchangeable Lens and uploaded to my Picturetown can be played back using the my Picturetown Pad app.

Book view

Photos can be viewed with a beautiful layout resembling those found in photo books and magazines. Shooting information is displayed under each photo, and as layout is random, photos are displayed differently each time, allowing users to enjoy a new perspective each time this view is enabled.

Map view

Photos with which location information has been recorded using the GPS function built into models such as the Nikon COOLPIX AW100 can be displayed on a map. In addition, photos with heading information recorded can be displayed with the information, making viewing them on a map more fun.

Share photos on Facebook and Twitter

Not only can photos or photo links to images uploaded to my Picturetown be sent to your own Facebook or Twitter account, but when the my Picturetown Pad app is running, photos and photo links to images taken with the iPad or iPhone can also be sent to Facebook or Twitter. These photos taken with the iPad or iPhone are also uploaded to my Picturetown at the same time. What's more, comments can be added to photos when they are sent to Facebook or Twitter.

Two days ago Nikon released a new free software called Regsweeper which will remove all registry entries after uninstalling Nikon software from your Windows based computer:

What is Regsweeper?
After uninstalling a Nikon software application from Microsoft Windows some associated files remain on the operating system. Running Regsweeper will completely uninstall all files installed by the Nikon software including the registry keys.

Why use Regsweeper?
In some rare cases when trying to re-install Nikon software some problems may occur. Running Regsweeper to ensure the system is completely clean of all previously installed files for that application will ensure there are no issues. User deletion of the registry files is not recommended as it may cause further problems, Regsweeper automatically removes these files cleanly.

...

Supported software: Camera Control Pro, Camera Control Pro 2, Capture NX 2, Nikon Transfer, Nikon Scan 4, ViewNX, ViewNX 2 32 bit, ViewNX 2 64 bit.

64 bit ViewNX 2? This must be a typo or Nikon will soon release a 64 bit version of their editing software. According to the ViewNX 2 specifications page, currently there is only a 32 bit version:

If you use 64-bit version Windows 7 or 64-bit version Windows Vista, operation takes place under 32-bit compatibility environment.

In the past, we have seen Nikon D800 and Nikon D400 books to show up online. One publisher actually came out and said that their D400 book was a pure speculation. We have discussed this in details before - basically anyone can register a new ISBN number and a book title. The question if this publisher really has some advanced information about Capture NX3 or they are just shooting in the dark. What I find also interesting is the release date of September 1st, 2011 - I already mentioned that Nikon is expecting to have a major product announcement(s) at the end of August.

The last rumor I received was that Nikon Capture NX 3 will be rewritten from scratch and will also include NIK plugins.

A few months ago I received a tip that the future Nikon Capture NX3 software will be completely rewritten from scratch and will include all Nik plugins except for Color Efex, which will be available as an option. I was never able to verify this rumor. A recent post on the [NR] forum reminded me to post this online (still unverified).

Capture NX2 program is written by Nik software. Back in 2006, Nikon made a “capital investment” in Nik Software. Almost all Nik plugins were recently updated to a 64 bit version. Nik recently announced also a new HDR Efex Pro software. Adding Nik plugins to the future Capture NX3 makes sense, especially if they release a 64 bit version of the software.
