The new Nikon Coolpix S30

Those are the new Coolpix camera for the first half of 2012: S9300, S9200, S6300, S4300, S4200, S3300, S3200, S30, P510, P310, L810, L310, L26 and L25. The new P310 still doesn't support NEF files. The P510 has a 42x optical zoom (24mm to 1000mm). The S30 looks like it will be a hit for all parents - waterproof, large buttons, fun built-in features, all for $119.95.

In addition to the February 7th announcement, Nikon will also have another press conference on February 1st, 2012. This is a day earlier then my initial report, but the actual public announcement may still happen on February 2nd. I believe this will be for the new line of Coolpix cameras, including a P300 replacement and a new water proof camera targeted at young photographers.

I already mentioned about the Nikon event on February 7th, 2012 but I was not sure what would be announced on that date. It will be the Nikon D800. The camera will have 36MP (not 24MP like reported on several websites). The new Coolpix cameraswill be introduced on February 2nd, 2012.

For all US readers this means the official press release will be around midnight on February 6th and February 1st respectively.

I do not expect any other products to be announced at that point. The two new DX lenses will probably be part of the D400 (or whatever the name will be) introduction later this year (I hear end of March, but this may change).

The Nikon D800 will start shipping few week after the announcement.

The camera will be on display at the CP+ show in Japan (drop me a line if you are going to visit this show).

There are multiple Nikon events scheduled in various stores across the world where you will be able to experience the new D800.

The current Coolpix lineup

With the next batch of Coolpix cameras, Nikon will introduce also a new point and shoot product line for kids. The first camera will be waterproof, shockproof and will have some unique built-in features (probably some fun image editing). The US price is expected to be under $120. This will be the second Nikon Coolpix waterproof camera after the AW100.

Several readers asked me if the Nikon P7100 will be refreshed in the next round of Coolpix announcements. Nikon releases point and shoot cameras twice a year, but the different models are usually refreshed every 12 months. This time around we can expect an update of the cameras announced back in February, 2011: P300, P500, S9100, L120, S6100, S3100, S4100, and L24. Later this year (usually in August) we can see new versions of the cameras announced in August, 2011: P7100, AW100, S1200pj, S8200, S6200, S4150, S6150 and S100.

Expect to see more Coolpix cameras with built-in GPS functionality.

New Nikon Coolpix cameras announcement before the CP+ show in Japan is guaranteed. There is a high probability that the Nikon D800 will be released as well, but I am not 100% sure yet. The website digicame-info reports that the D800 without the AA filter will cost around ¥300,000 in Japan (around $3,900) and will start shipping in mid-March 2012. The price of the D800 version with the AA filter is reported to be around $3000.

What else?

It will be a bonus if any of the lenses mentioned in this post gets introduced next month. Besides those products, I do not expect any other surprises in the next 30-60 days. I believe the D300s replacement is at least few months away and it will not be announced for the CP+ show in Japan.

Here are some crazy rumors I received recently - I have no reason to believe any of them, at least not at that point of time:

• Nikon full frame 4k video camera with a F mount
• New video light accessory that will be  launched with the D800
• Nikon 3D camera that will be a part of the Nikon 1 system
• Nikon AF Reflex Nikkor 800mm f/8 ED VR lens - this may actually materialize for Photokina

The current Nikon Coolpix camera lineup

Last week I posted about an upcoming Nikon event on February 7th, 2012. I received another tip from a different country about a Nikon event scheduled for January 25th, 2012. There are several possibilities here:

• there could be more than one Nikon announcement
• in some countries new product presentations sometimes happen after the product is already announced
• one of those dates could be for a "closed door" presentation to the press

Any way, something new is coming from Nikon in the last week of January and/or first week of February. Please also note that I am not sure whether the D800 will be released at that time - I used the word "probably" in my post. New Coolpix cameras are guaranteed, including a P300 replacement.

I will hopefully know more in the upcoming days/weeks.

Nikon Coolpix P300

Nikon filed patent 2011232502 in Japan for a 24-100mm f/1.8-2.6 lens which will probably be used in the Coolpix P300 replacement:

The current P300 model has a 24-100mm f/1.8-4.9 equivalent lens.

The Nikon P300 was announced on February 8th, 2011 and will probably be up for replacement in February 2012 (Coolpix cameras are usually refreshed in February and August)

This guest post review of the Nikon Coolpix AW100 all weather camera is written by Yamil R. Sued (hotgunshots.com)

When Nikon first announced the new “ALL WEATHER” AW100 Camera, I was sold. I have been looking for an all weather digital solution for years now. Yes, I know I can buy a nice underwater case, but that is just one more thing for me to carry on a trip. Over 50% of my workload is outdoor sports photography, but unlike other “general” sports shooters, I specialize in the shooting sports, pistol, rifle and shotgun events.  99% of these events take place outdoors and weather is not always so cooperative.

I wasn’t looking for a sports camera, that is a much more specialized item and in the not so optimal situations, I use “protection” on my D3’s against rain and even dust, I use my own gear and I can’t see the need to abuse it to a point of destruction. I know full well that the AW100 is just a point and shoot enclosed in a water/weather proof case. But putting together the basic features of the AW100 plus the all weather features, this camera is a sure winner and a must in my location kit. What for? Candids, location scouting, and to shoot those shots that happen when it rains and my D3’s are not yet weather proofed.

I don’t want to repeat the basic features of the camera, those are available at the Nikon website. I want to discuss the features I like and also the features I would like to see in future models of the AW series, maybe a AW101 or AW200.

Likes:

• The Image quality is superb, these JPG’s are out of this world, the only limitation I found what the time it took the camera to acquire focus.
• The high ISO performance is very good too, I shot some images under a downpour in Florida at ISO 400 and some limited Images at ISO 800 and the image quality was outstanding for a point & shoot camera with a very small sensor.
• Portability, this camera is very thin, light and small. Fits very well in a shirt pocket.
• Ease of use, once you do the initial set up, it’s ready to roll. The AF modes are really useful, but it doesn’t focus very fast.

Dislikes (or wishes):

• Lack of RAW Format, I shoot 99% of my professional work in RAW and I like the full control over the final image.
• Lack of choice of color space profiles, then again this is a point & shoot and even the higher priced P7000 doesn’t have this feature, I don’t think the P7100 has this feature either.
• AF, the camera focuses very well, but... coming from the DSLR world, it could focus faster, sometimes, in very low light it has a very hard time acquiring focus and locking into it. But then again, it’s a $379 point & shoot and not a $5000 DSLR.

Recommended accessories:

Lowe Pro makes this little pouch that fits the AW100 perfectly and it comes in several nice colors, it even has a great outside pocket to fit extra SD cards:

I took the AW100 to the mall and had the owner of the GadgetFilmz kiosk put a custom LCD protector on the AW100, there are several products out there that fit the AW100, like Hoodman, but I went with custom because I can never install the store bought protectors without leaving some large hunk of junk in between the protector and the LCD Glass, this could lead to a large scratch on the LCD protector glass.

The camera comes with a very nice neck strap, but I decided to use a wrist lanyard that I found laying around the house, it made more sense than to have a large neck strap on a pocket camera and it fits better on my pocket with the lanyard.

Conclusions:

This is a superb tool, great camera for candid photography and all around outdoor family fun and it’s a great addition to anybody’s gear bag, professional or amateur.

Update: some more P7100 hands-on from Pocket-lint and a new photo gallery from dpreview. Also, Fantasea announced plans to produce an underwater housing for the P7100.

Nikon published some images and video samples taken with the new Nikon Coolpix P7100. I did not see much coverage from the different press events across the world except this report from Tokyo. I also find it unusual that except dpreview nobody else got a hands-on preview on this camera.

New image processing technologies maximize the performance of the large 1/1.7-inch, 10.1-megapixel CCD sensor to deliver sharp, low-noise images that explode with vivid color. Additionally, the COOLPIX P7100 is compatible with the latest high speed SDXC memory cards for maximum performance.

The 7.1x NIKKOR lens has been paired with an enhanced AF system to deliver sharp images and HD movies in a variety of shooting scenarios. Whether tripod mounted to capture a distant vista or shooting a candid portrait, the result is amazingly fast focus acquisition that is consistently sharp throughout the entire focal range, even on a moving subject.

Superior Creative Control for the Advanced User
Detailed engineering led to the authentic styling of the COOLPIX P7100, which calls upon many of the features that Nikon D-SLR cameras are known for, including easily accessible mode dials, rounded curves and friendly ergonomics, all housed within a compact form factor. Consumers can compose through the bright optical viewfinder or by the vivid 3.0-inch 921,000-dot tilting vari-angle LCD screen. The new tilt screen enables more flexible shooting at creative angles, including down low, overhead or for ease-of-use when mounted on a tripod. The clear color vari-angle LCD display with anti-reflective coating produces high resolution and faithful color reproduction with a wide viewing angle.

The camera’s four exposure modes (Program, Shutter, Aperture and Manual) provide creative control over image capture. For added versatility, the COOLPIX P7100 has a sensitivity range up to ISO 3200, but can also be set to Hi 1 at full resolution (ISO 6400 equivalent). The P7100 also offers functions that enable superior rendering when shooting at high sensitivities, including a Low Noise Night Mode and a Noise Reduction Filter. ISO sensitivity ranges from ISO 100 to 6400 (expandable to ISO 12,800 in Low Noise Night Mode) to ensure sharp, crisp images when shooting in low-light or photographing fast-moving subjects.

For further creative control, the camera offers multiple new Special Effects and Filter Effects to create truly inspiring images. The new Zoom Exposure automates this typically difficult technique to create dynamic images with a slow shutter. Consumers can also choose the Defocus Filter to produce intentional, artful blur or use the Cross Process to create nostalgic and imaginative color tones in images. A new Creative Monochrome Filter can also be implemented to create a solarized look and feel to images or affect grain size in monochrome photos. Shooters can capture a wide tonal range in their images by utilizing the built-in High Dynamic Range (HDR) function as part of the Backlighting Mode, and can shoot in High/Low Key, Sepia and Painting Modes. While in Playback Mode, images can also be altered with a Fisheye Effect or Cross Screen Filter.

The design and interface of the COOLPIX P7100 has been created with the shooter in mind. It boasts two command dials including a new front mounted sub-command dial, which can be used to access settings and adjustments while holding the grip of the camera. The dials provide advance control and a sense of analog operation when using the camera for an enjoyable photographic experience. This control is implemented to simplify various operations using minimal controls. The COOLPIX P7100 also features a quick menu dial on the top of the camera. Through the quick menu dial, controls like ISO sensitivity, White Balance, advanced bracketing functions, My Menu, Picture Control and image size can be swiftly selected to capture desired results. Additionally, the camera’s Zoom Memory function enables the selection of a desired focal length during shooting.

For those shooting movies, the COOLPIX P7100 records High Definition (HD) movies at 720p (30 fps) with stereo sound through the built-in microphone. Users can also attach an optional external microphone, such as Nikon’s ME-1 microphone, via the stereo microphone jack. The P7100 also incorporates new movie recording features such as lens zooming during recording, a gain-up function to adjust the optional external microphone and an AE/AF lock available during recording, which is similar to that of a D-SLR camera. Additionally, the camera includes a mini HDMI connector that enables playback on HD televisions and other HDMI-enabled devices.

The COOLPIX P7100 can be connected to the optional 0.75x Wide-Angle Convertor WC-E75A, which allows for focal lengths as wide as 21mm (35mm format equivalent). P7100 users can also take advantage of Nikon’s Creative Lighting System with the built-in accessory shoe that supports Nikon’s i-TTL flash control, including compatibility with the SB-400, SB-700 and SB-900 speedlights.
