Nikon talks about “The birth of the COOLPIX design”

I know, you are not interested in Coolpix cameras, but this new article on Nikon’s website gives an interesting inside look of how Nikon designs a camera (ok, a Coolpix camera in this case). Some quotes:

“First, our marketing department constructs a product lineup and then they create the concept for each individual model. Naturally, camera designers actively participate in the development of product concepts. Once a general product concept has been determined, a team of designers is selected from the design department and serious work to come up with a design that satisfies the determined concept begins.”

“The first step is to create mockups from those sketches. This happens more than a year before the product is released. At this stage, we examine a wide variety of possibilities.”

“Each design team is comprised of two to five designers.”

And finally a quote from the last question about the future of the Coolpix design:

“As advances in mobile devices such as cellular telephones continue, we are beginning to see the fusion of digital cameras and such devices on the market.”

Did they say again “mobile devices” and “cellular telephones”? Remember this quote from Nikon’s president Makoto Kimura?

“Nowadays digital cameras take movies, performance of cameraphones is rapidly advancing and demand for simple movie cameras for uploading video on the Internet is on the rise. Redefinition of photography may become necessary.”

How about the news that Nikon is looking for partnership with online and mobile device companies?

Do you see a pattern here?

BTW, yesterday Samsung announced a new Wi-Fi point and shoot camera that can upload pictures and video to social networking sites, send emails, etc.

Details on the upcoming Nikon announcement

I have some more details on the upcoming Nikon announcement. There will be two dates: August 17th, 2010 will be for the Coolpix models and August 19th, 2010 will be for the four new lenses and the Nikon D3100. Those dates are European time – the announcements in Europe should happen early in the morning, around 6:00 am. For the US readers this will mean that the announcements could happen around 11pm or midnight EST on August 16th and August 18th, 2010.

I seriously doubt that something else will be announced on those dates or before. There will be probably another announcement before (or during) Photokina.

I have no dates or any new info on the potential D90 and D700 replacements.

Nikon Coolpix 1000pj replacement ready for release

The Nikon Coolpix 1000pj replacement may look like this

The rumor of a Nikon Coolpix 1000pj replacement started last month (see previous posts here and here plus related patents). The new version will allow the camera to be connected to a computer and serve as an external conventional projector. Two new details surfaced up for this camera: the connection to the computer (when used as projector) will be via USB and the camera will have a touchscreen display (the previous model was not touchscreen).

FYI: Nikon was first on the market (and as of today the only manufacturer) to introduce a camera with a built-in projector.

Announcement date: few weeks away.

Don’t forget the “G11 killer”

Few months ago Nikon’s UK Senior Product Manager Kevin Egan told AP that they planned to release a Canon G11 competitor with the last batch of Coolpix cameras back in February, but the camera was not ready. Expect this new “G11 killer” to be released with the next batch of Coolpix camera somewhere in the middle of August (unless Nikon decides to make a separate announcement for it).

Today I received also this tip:

“I work at ***. The Nikon rep was in the store and I was pressing him for any info… He told me that Nikon had 3 big cameras to be coming soon, and a G11 competitor had been in development for a while… probably this fall for a release…”

Nikon reps have proved not to be reliable source of information in the past, but this rumor reminded me of the statement Nikon made few months ago and I think it is worth sharing.

More on the Nikon Coolpix 1000pj replacement

The current Nikon Coolpix S1000pj model

Last week we heard about the upcoming Coolpix 1000pj replacement and the rumored ability to serve as a conventional external projector. Yesterday Digitimes got some more details: the built-in-camera LCoS pico-projector technology will be from Himax Technologies. The new light engine module should be smaller and cheaper compared to the 2009 version. It remains to be seen if Nikon will pass those savings to the consumer and introduce the new camera at a lower price point (the introduction price of Nikon Coolpix 1000pj was $429.95).

Nikon Coolpix S1000pj replacement will serve as a conventional projector

In the latest issues of Chasseur d’Images there is a small article that Nikon is preparing a replacement of the Coolpix S1000pj (this is the one with the built-in projector). The new version will provide the option to be connected to a computer and serve as an external conventional projector.

There were already some rumors that the Coolpix S1000pj is discontinued in at least one major retailer. Nikon also filed numerous patent application for various projector technologies over the past 12 months.

The next batch of Nikon Coolpix cameras is expected to be released in the first half of August. A new, high end Nikon Coolpix p&s camera is also rumored (to compete directly with Canon G11).

Chasseur d’Images are not afraid to publish rumors and they had some good leaks in the past. It is interesting to note that all they got this time is a p&s leak and nothing DSLR related.

Nikon instant rebates extended till June 26

Yes, the instant Nikon rebates have been extended in the US and will run again from June 6th – 26th, 2010 (the current program expires on May 29th – not sure if the rebates will be valid from May 29th – June 6th).

The only new addition will be the Nikon Coolpix S1000pj that will be on sale for around $299 after the rebate:

Also, new Nikon rebates program in Switzerland: the Nikon D700 is not part of the rebates this time (rebates will run from May 15th till July 31st, 2010).

“Nikon prepares for PowerShot G11 battle” (Nikon Coolpix P7000?)

The phrase “Nikon prepares for PowerShot G11 battle” comes from the latest issue of AmateurPhotographer that is out today. In the last few hours I was trying to find somebody that could tell me more about this article. Sorry about the delay.

Nikon’s UK Senior Product Manager Kevin Egan told AP that Nikon planned to release a Canon G11 competitor with the last batch of Coolpix cameras, but the camera was not ready. The model in question will contain DLSR technology in a “high-end Coolpix compact camera” body. No release date was mentioned. The full article can be found here.

This news, together with the upcoming “Press Morning” and the current countdown in France makes me think that we may see a Nikon Coolpix P7000 on Monday, March 8th. Also the magical number 8 from the countdown: there were suppose to be a total of 8 Coolpix cameras. Only 7 models were released last month. One is still missing.

And just two more references related to this topic: in this interview Johan Kling (head of Nikon Sweden) said that Canon’s advantages (1080p video in DSLR and G11) will end soon. The Nikon Coolpix P6000 has been discontinued since August 2009. The Canon PowerShot G11 currently sells for less than $500.

For the record: I have not received a single tip about a potential Nikon Coolpix P7000 camera release.

As previously reported, Nikon did have a press conference in Japan today. They announced the Coolpix P100 and the Coolpix S3000, S4000, S6000 p&s cameras. Those models were announced on February 2nd, 2010 in the US and Europe.

Canon’s advantages (1080p video in DSLR and G11) will end soon

KameraBild (translated) published a video interview with Johan Kling, the head of Nikon Sweden. Some interesting comments:

He think that it is “highly likely” that future Nikon DSLR cameras will have both 720p and 1080p video.

He also talked about the gap in the high-end Nikon compacts segment (think Canon G11 or EVIL). The Nikon P5000 and P6000 has not been a success. Nikon Sweden seems to be convinced that engineers in Japan are working on a new model to successfully compete in that category.

The bottom line of this interview (form NikonRumors perspective) is that Canon currently has advantage with 1080p video in DSLRs and the G11 model and this will end soon. I say cheers to that!

Detailed translation after the break (thanks Andreas):

- First he talks about the 7 new Coolpix, and about the importance to Nikon of competing in this market segment. He thinks this market is a hard market, but that they see that Nikon is doing increasingly better. He says it’s a large market for compacts, and that Nikon will increase their market share.

- The interviewer insinuates that Nikon has had focus on DSLR’s at the expense of compacts. The Nikon guy fully agrees to this statement, saying that main focus has been on DSLR’s and lenses. He further says that we have seen for the last two years an increasing focus towards compacts, and that this trend will continue. The interviewer says that Nikon will increase their market share from 13% to 15% (not sure if this is official Nikon statement, but it sounds like that from the way it’s said. Also not sure if this is the Swedish market share, or what).

- In order to increase the market share, the Nikon rep says that the cameras must be sufficiently good, have an appealing design, and overall have the right functions/specs. Most important is the sales channels, though. If they cannot get into major distributor chains, they will have difficulties reaching the required sales numbers (this is said as a general comment, not necessarily hinting that Nikon struggles with the sales chains…). He does say that the focus on DSLR’s from Nikon has somewhat also been the attitude from the major sales chains (El-giganten & MediaMarkt as examples, similar stores as Best Buy in the US), i.e. that DSLR’s are Nikon but compacts are any other brands.

- He further comments on the fact that one of the new compacts comes in 7 colors, that the color variety is important. He says that they saw from S220 (S3000’s preceeding camera), availbale in 5 colors, sold very good in all but “1 or 2″ colors. From this he concludes that customers wants to find “their color” and that black and silver is “out” in the lowest price classes. In the higher price classes, however, silver and black is the way to go. He comments further that the colors comes from Japan, and that it could be difficult to find colors that suit all continents.

- In a press conference, the Nikon guy had stated that Nikon is good in the lowest and highest price classes (understood to mean low end compacts and DSLR’s), states the interviewer, and further asks why Nikon does not have an product in the class of Canon G11. The Nikon rep agrees, and says that Nikon is asking themselves the same question. He says that they can only apologize for not having “a product similar to the G….. 11″ (a bit hesitant there!) He further says that they did have the P5000 and P6000, and he hopes that the Nikon development team is working on this issue. “My personal opinion is that they are doing this, guaranteed. Hopefully within the near future we will see something similar [to the G11]“.

- The interviewer asks how the top P-line compared to G11 in terms of sales. The Nikon rep says that the G11 market is small, but important, since many professionals want’s “RAW, etc.” He further says that there a gap to fill, and that it should be natural that also Nikon is represented in this marked.

- Being asked which of the now introduced new models will sell the most and be most important, he says that S3000 will sell the most, followed by L21 and L22, meaning the lowest cost models. The most important of the new cameras to Nikon are P100 and S8000, and hopes that the end users and critics will give them a good reception, since these are the high-end cameras and Nikon wants to increase their market share in this market segment.

- P100 has full HD, as opposed to Nikons DSLR’s, says the interviewer, further asking if full HD isn’t something that should be available also in the DSLR’s. The Nikon rep says that yes, they should, since this is being increasingly asked for by customers, and that we have to see what comes in the future. He does say, though, that it’s a question about use of the movies, and that for DSLR’s the main user group is new photographers that delivers news for the web and that 1080p can then give too large files, so that a trade off has been made for the movie function in the DSLR’s. However, “in the future one would likely be able to choose the format”. Being asked if a prosumer DSLR will get full HD, he says that he can not confirm this, but that his personal speculation is that it’s quite likely that Nikon, Canon and others will offer different [movie] formats in the DSLR’s.

- Being asked if they have learned anything from the movie function in their cameras so far, he says that there’s an incredible amount of knowledge being obtained in the last couple of years, and that this is fed back to the developers in Tokyo. He can not comment on the specifics of this, but it’s related to format, stereo microphone, handling of movies in the camera such as retouching abilities in-camera, etc. They have taken their first steps with respect to this and it has been an enormous success with movies in DSLR’s, he says, and we will see even more of this in the future.

- On the topic of movie compression in the compacts (h264) vs. DSLR’s (mjpeg) and why they differ, he says this is likely due to Nikon aiming the functions towards the user, the compacts being used for shorter clips on youtube, etc, and that this is likely caused by the user perspective. On asked whether he takes movies with his own camera, he states that he certainly does, mostly taking films of his son, but that he hasn’t yet gotten started on post-processing but leaves them as-shot. Isn’t that what most people does, the interviewer asks. “Yes, I think so”, the Nikon rep replies as the end comment to the interview.

Well, there you have it. A long post, I know… Anyways, one get’s the impression from the Nikon guy that he doesn’t really know that much, but rather speculates and offers quite expected answers to the questions.

The waiting game

11:09 pm – I guess that’s it for today. There should be more, in few days.

11:05 pm – Coolpixes announced.

9:52 pm – Nikon Norway again: in the Press Room the new 300mm 2.8 VRII and the teleconverter are listed twice – maybe a placeholder for the upcoming two new lenses?

9:32 pm - A good list of missing Nikon product numbers (lenses) can be found here. Let’s see if we will fill some of those up tonight.

9:24 pm – A reader just emailed me about a broken link on nikon.no website: the link is in the lower right corner and it reads “Important Message” (Viktig melding). If you click on it, it will bring you back to the main page. Not sure how long this link has been there.

8:32 pm – nothing yet. I say check your local Nikon site and your favorite online retailer and look for something new and unusual (broken links, blank pages, down websites, etc.) Something must show up! Now is the time.

10:20 am - I got more than 20 emails this morning asking me what will be Nikon’s surprise at PMA. I have no information about a potential surprise. Of course everything is possible, but I will not go into speculations at that point. The only report about a surprise was from Hiroshi Takashima and I think he is referring to the rumored Nikon EVIL system that is expected @Photokina.

From what I hear, there will be no “serious” Coolpix camera announced this time:

Coolpix S8000 will be the slimmest 10x zoom with HD video available to date
Coolpix P100 has a back-illuminated sensor (Nikon’s first?), 26x zoom

In the next few weeks before PMA, new compact cameras are expected from Olympus, Ricoh, Panasonic (new G model and even a possible LX3 replacment) and Sony (besides new compacts, the α700 is expected to be replaced).

Nikon Coolpix S3000 and Coolpix S8000 will also be announced

In addition to the P100 and L110, Nikon will also announce Coolpix S3000 and Coolpix S8000 cameras. I am still expecting more details in the next few days.

I am sorry I keep bringing up compact cameras, but I think this is what the February 3rd announcement will be about. I now strongly believe that there will be another announcement in the week after February 3rd (or maybe the week before?) that will bring the good stuff. I do not think the February 3rd date will be for Coolpix cameras and DSLRs/lenses at the same time. Last year, Nikon first announced the D300s and D3000 (July 30th) and the week after (August 4th) four Coolpix cameras were released.

Nikon Coolpix P100, Coolpix L110 expected

Nikon Coolpix P100 (P90 replacement) and Coolpix L110 (L100 replacement) are expected on February 3rd. Those will not be the only Coolpix cameras that will be announced.

I will rate this rumor @ 80% today since I expect more details tomorrow.

Still no word of DSLR or lenses announcements.

Nikon press conference scheduled for February 3rd, 2010

Nikon press conference is scheduled for February 3rd, 2010 – I am saying this with 100% confidence. As I mention before, this time I will not specify the country and location. This date also matches with the expected release of new Coolpix cameras on February 2nd.

In the past Nikon has not scheduled press conferences for their Coolpix line – they have done that only for new DSLR models and lenses. On February 3rd we will either have Coolpixes, DSLRs and lenses announced at the same time, or Nikon has a “special” Coolpix to talk about.

If the February 3rd event is Coolpix related (I doubt that), we may expect another press conference the week after.
