New firmware update 1.2 for Nikon Coolpix P7000

Nikon released new firmware update 1.2 for Nikon Coolpix P7000 today. I do not remember when was the last time Nikon issued a new firmware for a camera that has already been replaced (by the P7100). The changes include:

Autofocus performance has been increased for more reliable focus acquisition on the intended subject, reducing the number of cases in which focus on the subject was not acquired or focus was acquired on the background when the shutter-release button was pressed halfway.
Auto bracketing and the self timer can now be enabled at the same time.
Aperture settings at or near maximum aperture were grayed out and apparently unavailable for selection (selection was actually possible) when the following procedure was performed. This issue has been resolved.
1. An aperture value other than maximum aperture was applied with shooting in [A] (aperture-priority auto) mode.
2. The camera was turned off .
3. The camera was turned on again.
4. The user attempted to adjust the aperture setting (aperture settings at or near maximum aperture grayed out).
An issue that prevented operation of the specified function when the shutter-release button was pressed while theFn (function) button was held down in [M] (manual) mode has been resolved.
An issue that in some rare cases caused inaccurate shutter speed display in [M] (manual) mode has been resolved.
An issue that caused an asterisk (*) to be displayed, and continue to be displayed even when settings were reverted to their default values, next to the Vivid Picture Control (COOLPIX Picture Control) option when User Setting U3 was enabled has been resolved.
The results of adjustments to White balance>Choose color temp. using the P7000's NRW (RAW) processingfunction on NRW (RAW) images were the opposite of those achieved with adjustment of NEF (RAW) images captured with Nikon digital-SLR cameras (higher settings resulted in bluer images while lower settings resulted in redder images). P7000 settings have been reversed for operation and results similar to that of D-SLR cameras.
An issue that in some extremely rare cases caused NRW (RAW) images to become completely black with editing using the camera's NRW (RAW) processing function or with RAW processing using ViewNX 2 has been resolved.
An issue that caused borders and outlines in images to appear rough with playback on an HDTV when the camera was connected to the TV via an HDMI cable has been resolved.

What's fixed:

Total image recording times for NRW (RAW) files have been reduced. This includes image recording times for NRW+JPEG file recording options

Lens control has been optimized to reduce the frequency with which the “Initializing lens. Cannot focus.” message is displayed.
An issue that, in some rare cases, prevented zoom operation has been resolved.
An issue that caused the monitor display to exhibit a loss of detail in highlights (blown highlights) when the shutter-release button was pressed halfway with Active D-Lighting enabled has been resolved.

Today Fantasea announced the FP7000 - the first water housing for the Nikon Coolpix P7000 camera (not listed on Fantasea's website yet). Available in early 2011, price is not yet released.

What is interesting here is that Fantasea came up with this solution just few days after the Nikon Coolpix P7000 camera was announced. This confirms that Nikon does share information about upcoming products with selected manufacturers. Good to know.

ISO sensitivity ranges from ISO 100 to 6400 (expandable to ISO 12,800 in low noise Night Mode) to ensure incredibly sharp, crisp images when shooting in low-light or photographing fast-moving subjects. The P7000 also offers a variety of functions that enable superior rendering when shooting at high sensitivities, including a Low Noise Night Mode and a Noise Reduction Filter. It seems that the second round of Nikon announcements before Photokina will also be divided into two: the Nikon Coolpix P7000 (and probably few more Coolpix cameras) will be announced on September 8th, 2010 and the rest (D7000, 200mm f/2 plus the second lens and a new Speedlight) will be announced on September 15th, 2010.

Nikon D90 replacement and P7000 will not be announced tonight

A lot of readers are still asking me about the Nikon D90 replacement and the P7000 announcements. I will just repeat some of the old information I already published online: the D90 replacement (not sure about the exact name yet) will be announced on/around September 15th together with a new Nikkor 200mm f/2 lens. I already reported some basic specs a month ago:

Magnesium-alloy body
16MP sensor
1080 HD video
Somewhere between 6-8 fps
Improved ISO range: 100-25600*
39 AF points
Price: $1199 for body only

Since the Nikon P7000 p&s camera was not announced yesterday with the rest of the Coolpix cameras, I am guessing that it will be announced in September with the D90 replacement. We may have the same scenario in September - one Coolpix announcement and few days later a DSLR and lens announcements.

I will repeat again, there is no sign of a full frame DSLR for Photokina.

* - Today some more details surfaced on the new Alpha cameras from Sony (specs | pics). You can see that the 16MP sensor has hi ISO of 25600. I already mentioned that the D90 replacement should have a better ISO compared to the 100-12800 ISO range of the D3100, so I assume this range will be 100-25600.

Photokina is the biggest photography equipment show in the world and it takes place every two years in Cologne, Germany. The dates for 2010 are September 21-26.

Here is an updated list of what Nikon is expected to release for Photokina this year:

Nikon D90 replacement (probably called D95, low chance of being called D8000):
- Aluminium or magnesium-alloy body
- 16MP sensor
- 1080 HD video
- Somewhere between 6-8 fps
- Improved ISO (don't know what exactly the improvement is - higher ISO, or just better ISO at the same D90 level)
- 39 AF points
- Price: $1199 for body only
- Announcement: on/around September 15th, 2010

Nikon D3100:
- Continuous AF in video mode/live view
- New AF points configuration which should cover a very large portion of the viewfinder. Total of 11 or 12 AF points.
- 14 MP CMOS sensor
- HD video: 1080p/24 and 720p 30/24!
- AVCHD video codec
- In camera video editing capabilities
- 3 fps
- Will be sold in a kit with a 18-55mm lens
- No swivel display
- Announcement: August 19th, 2010

Lenses:
- Nikkor AF-S 85mm f/1.4G N (priced around $1650)
- Nikkor 24-120 f/4 ED VR N (priced around $1300)
- Nikkor 28-300 f/3.5-5.6 ED VR (could be f/4.5-5.6, priced around $1050)
- Nikkor 55-300mm f/4.5-5.6 ED VR DX (priced around $350)
- Nikkor AF-S 200mm f/2.0G IF-ED N VRII (priced mid to high $5k)
- The first four lenses should be announced on August 19th, the last one should be released on or around September 15th, 2010

Coolpix & EVIL expectations after the break:

Nikon Coolpix P7000:
- 10MP 1/1.7″ sensor
- 28-200mm equivalent zoom lens with f/2.8-5.6
- Announcement: August 17th, 2010

Nikon Coolpix 1000pj replacement
- Will serve as an external conventional projector
- USB connection to computer for signal transfer
- Touchscreen display
- Announcement: August 17th, 2010

More Coolpix cameras: probably 3-4 more generic Coolpix cameras will be released, some with touchscreen LCD. Announcement: August 17th, 2010.

Nikon EVIL - new mirrorless system (maybe with a mirror) to be shown at Photokina. A very good chance to have a DX sensor. Expect to see it in stores in 2011.

Everything not listed on this list is of course possible, but less likely. I will continue to post updates as I get new information.

The current Nikon Coolpix P6000 model

Here are some more "basic" specs for the upcoming Nikon Coolpix P7000 (replacement of the P6000):

10MP 1/1.7" sensor (P6000 had a 13.5MP 1/1.72" sensor) - similar to the last Canon G11, Nikon went a step back in the MP count

28-200mm equivalent zoom lens with f/2.8-5.6 (P6000 had 28-112mm f/2.7-5.9 lens | G11 has 28-140mm f/2.8-4.5 lens)

What I reported back in July, now has a probability of 99%: Nikon has scheduled multiple press events across Europe for August 19th, 2010.

I am still a bit puzzled about the Coolpix cameras announcement that is suppose to be on August 17th, 2010. In the past, Nikon aways announced the p&s line one week before or after the DSLR products. Maybe this time they are trying to combine both announcements in one press event.

The big question, to which I don't have an answer yet, is whether the Nikon D90 replacement will be announced on that date as well.

Nikon D95, Coolpix P7000

Some interesting information came in today - basically more details on the already existing rumors:

The Nikon D90 replacement will probably be called Nikon D95.

Magnesium body. Previous reports indicated that parts of the body will be aluminium. My guess here is that the body will be magnesium-alloy, just like the D300s.

16MP sensor (expected)

1080 HD video.

6 fps (FYI: Nikon D90 does 4.5fps, the D300s - 7fps). The initial report was for 8fps. Let's just say it will be somewhere between 6-8fps.

39 AF points.

Price: $1199 for body only.

No idea about a potential announcement date for the D95 (maybe also in August?).

Ok, now the rest of the rumors - Nikon Coolpix P7000 will be the new top-of-the-line point and shoot camera from Nikon, a.k.a. "the G11 killer" (I know, the Canon G12 will be coming in September). It will have a larger sensor (don't know how large) and 8fps continuous shooting(!).

Another tip came in for the 28-300mm full frame zoom lens (initially reported as 18-200 FX zoom).

The Nikon D3100 will be 14MP, the rest of the specs should be right.

The remaining items covered in the my previous "Recap" post seems to be correct.

Every once in a while, I have to remind everyone that this is a rumor site. Everything written here should be considered as fiction and you should not make any decision based on the information provided on this blog (selling/buying equipment, changing schedules to accommodated potential new product, etc.). I am trying my best to give a numerical ratings for most of the information I post, but this is not really an exact science - in other words: I can be wrong. If you are not sure what and when to buy, consider renting until the sky clears (where there’s smoke there’s fire). Don't stay without a camera!

Now back to the recap - this is what I think I know so far:

Potential announcement of new Nikon products between August 17-19, 2010. There could be another press event before or after that date - Nikon has too many products to announce and I doubt they can do it all in one day. This is a list of what I think will be announced in the next two months prior to Photokina:

Nikon D3100 - the big question mark here is the sensor MP count. I believe it will be 10MP, but many readers think it should be more.

Nikon D90 replacement - the question mark here is the high ISO performance. I do not have an exact number, but the way it was described to me "same noise performance like the D700" could have different interpretations.

Lenses - the Joker here is the 18-200mm FX lens. This could be a 28-300mm FX lens and the f stop could be 4.5-5.6 instead of 3.5 -5.6.

Don’t forget the “G11 killer”

Few months ago Nikon’s UK Senior Product Manager Kevin Egan told AP that they planned to release a Canon G11 competitor with the last batch of Coolpix cameras back in February, but the camera was not ready. Expect this new "G11 killer" to be released with the next batch of Coolpix camera somewhere in the middle of August (unless Nikon decides to make a separate announcement for it).

Today I received also this tip:

"I work at ***. The Nikon rep was in the store and I was pressing him for any info... He told me that Nikon had 3 big cameras to be coming soon, and a G11 competitor had been in development for a while... probably this fall for a release..."

Nikon reps have proved not to be reliable source of information in the past, but this rumor reminded me of the statement Nikon made few months ago and I think it is worth sharing.

If you go to iamnikon.com you will get a blank page, but if you go to iamnikon.com/images you will get a redirect to europe-nikon.com. Nikon is definitely preparing a new website. The question is whether there will be a real product behind the marketing campaign in France and the "Press Morning" in the UK or just a new website.

The same "I am Nikon" web site exists also in German language ichbinnikon.at and ichbinnikon.at/images also redirects to europe-nikon.com.

If you Google "I am Nikon" you will see few more redirects.

Flickr also has a group called IamNikon which is private for now - maybe the new site will have something to do with Flickr?

IamNikon.com domain name is registered to Key-Systems which seems to be a regular domain reseller.

IchbinNikon.at domain name is registered to an advertising agency in Germany called JVM and of course Nikon is one of their clients (in English).

The news about Nikon working on a G11 killer may or may not be related with the current ongoing marketing campaign and this new website from Nikon.

As of today, I have not received any information about upcoming Nikon products.

This is what we have so far:

Card #4: "I am Marco Polo" - probably means geo-tagging (P6000 was the only Coolpix that had built-in GPS).
Card #5: "I am innovative" - Nikon will probably introduce a new technology in this upcoming Coolpix camera - could be based on their statement that the "G11 killer" will contain some DLSR technology.
Card #6: "I am sexy" - maybe a new design (different from the previous Nikon P6000)?
Card #7 ": I am fun" - probably means nothing, just Nikon marketing talking.
