Tamron announced a full frame 24-70mm f/2.8 lens with built-in ultrasonic motor and image stabilization. Price and availability were not revealed.

VC ( Vibration Compensation)
VC ( Vibration Compensation) is Tamron’s proprietary image stabilization system. Tamron’s VC is a three-coil system, whereby three driving coils activate the shake-compensating VC lens group electromagnetically via three steel balls. The VC lens elements are held in place only by contact with the steel balls, achieving smooth movement with little friction. This provides a stable viewfinder image with excellent tracking performance. And as the VC lens may be moved in parallel using only the motorized control, the mechanical structure has been simplified, enabling the creation of a more compact lens.

New VC system (moving coil method)
Tamron’s original VC image stabilization mechanism utilized a moving magnet system whereby a heavy magnet was positioned near the moving VC lens element. In the new VC unit the positions of the magnet and the coil are reversed, because of this the VC optical lens element is attached to the coil. The new VC mechanism employs a moving coil mechanism with a lightweight coil, and the lighter coil reduces the load on the drive system. Thus, the lighter, more compact new VC unit contributes to the lens’s overall light weight and compact size.

Because the 24-70 mm F/2.8 Di VC USD is a high-speed zoom lens with maximum aperture of F/2.8, its VC system must drive a lens that is larger and heavier than other zooms. Therefore, the shape, size and layout of the drive coils are all designed to obtain sufficient thrust. The result is a full-size, high-speed zoom that provides the same high level of compensation effect.

About the ultrasonic motor
In the ultrasonic motor, a piezoelectric element arranged in a ring formation generates ultrasonic vibrations in a metallic ring stator, and the vibration energy is used to rotate a metallic ring rotor that is attached to the stator. The rotation energy is in turn transferred from the metallic ring rotor to operate the focus lens.

I just received this picture of a Nikon AF-S Teleconverter TC-17E III. I have no idea what's the story behind it. I have not heard anything about this being a part of the D800 announcement next week, but it's definitely a possibility. The TC-20E got refreshed in December, 2009. The current TC-17E II model was announced in May, 2004. With the upcoming Summer Olympics, I can see how Nikon would release a new TC-17E.

Update - here is another picture:

From the comparison below you can see that the TC-17E III has a marking similar to the new(er) TC-20E III (dot instead of a dash) and the word "Aspherical" as part of the label.

Back in May of 2011 Nikon filed a patent infringement lawsuit against Sigma over lenses with VR technology. I was told that the negotiations between the two companies should be finalized in the coming weeks and a press release will be issued. Nikon was initially looking for a compensation of 12.6 billion yen (around 150 million dollars) which I assume is a lot of money for Sigma. I am not sure of the final outcome, or least not confident enough to post it online.

Tokina just announced a new version of their popular 11-16mm f/2.8 lens. The new lens will have an aspherical element, new coating for improved performance and a SD-M (Silent Drive-Module) autofocus motor (AF-S equivalent). You can now use this lens even with Nikon DSLR cameras that don't have an integrated AF motor (D3100, D5100). The Nikon version is expected to start shipping in March, 2012. The old Tokina 11mm-16mm f/2.8 lens currently has a $40 mail-in rebate.

I cannot get enough of those crazy Nikon 1 lens combinations. This setup was sent by Peter Korp and includes Nikon V1 + FT-1 adapter + Nikon T adapter + Celestron reflex 2000mm f/10 which makes this a 5400mm weapon (FX equivalent). Both objects were approximately a mile away. Electronic shutter, self timer at 10 seconds and focus magnification were used to take those two samples - the first one was captured at ISO 100, the second at ISO 800 (click on image for full res version):

New Nikon Coolpix cameras announcement before the CP+ show in Japan is guaranteed. There is a high probability that the Nikon D800 will be released as well, but I am not 100% sure yet. The website digicame-info reports that the D800 without the AA filter will cost around ¥300,000 in Japan (around $3,900) and will start shipping in mid-March 2012. The price of the D800 version with the AA filter is reported to be around $3000.

What else?

It will be a bonus if any of the lenses mentioned in this post gets introduced next month. Besides those products, I do not expect any other surprises in the next 30-60 days. I believe the D300s replacement is at least few months away and it will not be announced for the CP+ show in Japan.

Here are some crazy rumors I received recently - I have no reason to believe any of them, at least not at that point of time:

• Time lapse shooting - This new feature combines a selected frame rate and “shooting interval” in a dedicated time lapse photography menu. Playback can be achieved with a wide variety of speeds from 24x to 36,000x while producing a fully finished movie file output for faster multimedia workflows.

• Remote shutter operation - Using dedicated Movie Custom Settings, recording can be set to be engaged by the shutter release button -users can now use a variety of remote accessories to trigger video recording.

• NIKKOR lens compatibility - The highest caliber optics are vital to creating HD images and Nikon is the world leader in optics manufacturing with a legacy spanning more than 75 years. Nikon has a vast NIKKOR lens system, with more than 50 lenses with a variety of focal lengths and features, including VR II vibration reduction.

Professional Construction, Superior Operability

The reputation and respect bestowed upon a Nikon D-Series flagship camera is earned from those who use it; therefore the chassis of the Nikon D4 is machined from magnesium alloy for maximum durability and reliability. The body of the camera is sealed and gasketed for resistance to dirt and moisture, as well as electromagnetic interference. Photographers are able to easily compose through the bright optical viewfinder, which offers 100% frame coverage. The shutter has been tested to withstand 400,000 cycles for maximum durability, while sensor cleaning is employed by vibrating the OLPF. The self diagnostic shutter unit also encompasses a mirror balancer to minimize the residual “bounce” to enhance AF and extend viewing time. The overall controls and operability of the camera has also been engineered with a renewed emphasis on speed and functionality. A new joystick style sub-selector is also placed on the camera’s rear for AF point and option selection, while vertical controls have been enhanced for improved operability. A wired Ethernet port is also utilized so that a user can shoot tethered and transfer images easily and quickly to clients. Nikon has also introduced the new WT-5A wireless file transmitter, to transmit via FTP server or computer. The device can be set to transfer either automatically or manually selected images. This device also allows for remote operation of the camera using Nikon’s Camera Control Pro 2 software. A mobile application is also in development to control the camera using this accessory, which will include the ability to trigger the shutter and record video, making this a must-have remote accessory for many professionals.

The New Nikon AF-S NIKKOR 85mm f/1.8G Prime Lens Combines Practicality with Portability Resulting In A Versatile Portrait Lens

The first article about the Nikon D4 appeared briefly online today. The article was dated January 10, 2012 - this may be the actual release date to the public. The January 6th press event could just be to introduce the camera to the press. I cannot publish the entire article, but here are some interesting new specs (the initial Nikon D4 specs were correct with the exception of the ISO range):

• Nikon D4 will have substantially lighter body
• Available in February
• Suggested retail price: $6,000
• The ISO range is listed again as 100 to 102,400, expandable to 50 to 204,800. Those were the original D4 specs I published back in December but then I had to correct them. I guess I was wrong in my correction.

As of today I don't have any details on the Nikon D400 DSLR camera (or whatever the D300s replacement will be called). The only information I received is that the Nikon D400 will be released in 2012 after the D800/D4 announcements (I was told in March). It's just too early to consider this information as reliable. Maybe Nikon will really try to get it out before the London Olympics. The Nikon D400 is supposed to be a "bigger D7000" with a monster burst rate and tweaked AF system from the D4.

In 2012 Nikon will be announcing the D4/D800 plus a D7000 replacement (probably in August). Adding the D400 on top of those three cameras will really make 2012 a "Nikon DSLR year".

I am also getting some tips that a new Nikkor AF-S 24mm f/1.8G DX (no VR) lens is currently being tested. With the success of the AF-S 35mm f/1.8G DX, I will not be surprised if Nikon releases another DX prime lens.

On January 6th, 2012 Nikon will have a major announcement. Expect the Nikon D4 and one new lens (probably AF-S 85mm f/1.8G). Friday is an unusual date for Nikon to introduce new products, but my understanding is that there will be press events scheduled in Las Vegas during the weekend before the PMA show that starts on January 10, 2012.
