Nikon 1 gets new lens firmware updates and a discount

Today Nikon released new firmware updates for three of the Nikon 1 zoom lenses. The fixes include:

An issue that sometimes caused the aperture value recorded in image data to differ from the actual aperture value at which the image was shot has been resolved.
An issue that in some rare cases caused images to be blurred when shot immediately after the camera was shaken or moved quickly has been resolved.

New Nikon instant rebates now live on Amazon

The new Nikon instant rebates are now live on Amazon. As previously reported the savings are up to $400 if you buy a qualifying lens and DSLR.

Amazon also raised their prices, complying with the new Nikon policy, for example:

Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 is now $2,399.00 (was $2,159.96 last week)
Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 is now $1,889.00 (was $1,700.96 last week)
Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 is now $1,999.00 (was $1,781.76 last week)

The new Nikon rebates (US)

The current Nikon instant rebates on the D7000, 5100 and 3100 will probably be extended till November 19th. The rebate program after November 19th will depend on the situation in Thailand.

Here are the details on the new Nikon instant rebates that will start on October 16th and will end on November 19th, 2011. Keep in mind that even with the new rebates, you will be paying full price starting this Sunday:

$400 off with the purchase of Nikkor 14-24mm f/2.8
$300 off with the purchase of Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8
$400 off with the purchase of Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8
$300 off with the purchase of Nikkor 24-120mm f/4

The above savings will be valid only with the purchase of the following bodies: D7000, D700, D300s, D3s & D3x (D700 and D3s will probably be out of stock). The D7000, D5100 and the D3100 may have a separate $100 rebate. Some consumer lenses will also be included in the rebate program. I will post the full details on Sunday after the rebates become active.

Since B&H will be closed till the weekend, it seems that they already updated their prices according to the new Nikon policy. You can get a feeling of the new prices on their website. Here are few examples:

Nikon 70-200mm f/2.8 is $2,399.95 at B&H, currently $2,159.96 at Amazon.
Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 is $1,889.95 at B&H, currently $1,700.96 at Amazon
Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 is $1,999.95 at B&H, currently $1,781.76 at Amazon
Nikon D7000 is $1,199.95 at B&H, currently $1,099.95 at Amazon

Amazon and Adorama still have the old prices but this will all change on October 16th. If you have planned to buy a lens, now would be a good time to pull the trigger and save few $.

Just a reminder that there will be a new Nikon instant rebate program starting on the 16th (you will need to purchase a Nikon body in order to qualify and the D700 and D3s will probably be out of stock).

The next Nikon instant rebate program will start on October 16th, 2011 and will again include pro lenses like the 24-70 f/2.8 and 70-200 f/2.8. Few months ago Nikon removed all pro level equipment from their current rebate program and now it seems that they are bringing them back. October 16th is also the date when Nikon will start enforcing their new pricing policy in the US.

Canon reported a drop in their profit for Q1 and lowered their sales forecast. Expect similar results from Nikon when they publish their financial results on May 12, 2011 @3:00pm Japanese time.

Nikon prices continue to rise in the US while inventory continues to dry up (see previous price checks on March 23rd and March 15th):

Nikon instant rebates will be extended but without the pro bodies and lenses

The Nikon instant rebates in the US will be extended again, but as expected this time they will exclude all pro DSLR bodies and lenses produced in Japan (the D300s is produced in Thailand):

Nikon DSLRs included in the new instant rebate program: D3000, D3100, D5000, D90, D7000 and D300s.
Lenses included in the new instant rebate program: Nikkor 55-200mm, Nikkor 55-300mm, Nikkor 70-300mm, Nikkor 85mm Micro, Nikkor 18-200mm VRII.
There will be also new Coolpix rebates (P7000 will be included).

The different body+lens combinations will save you up to $200 (compared to $400 before). The new Nikon instant rebates program will run from March 27 - April 30, 2011. I will post the detailed combination break down on Monday.

Nikon instant rebates coming to an end?

Amazon has ended the Nikon instant rebate in the US. The program was initially set to expire on March 26th, but I guess Amazon pulled the plug earlier (before and after screenshot):

The Nikon rebates at B&H will end in less than 24 hours (B&H is closing online ordering every Friday evening):

The Nikon instant rebate program started on March 1st, 2010 in the US. I believe there is a very low chance of the rebate program being extended again, given the recent price increases, fall of the JPY vs. the USD and the fact that Nikon's fiscal year ends on March 31st.

A new rebate program was started in France and Belgium on March 14 (valid till May 14th, 2011):

Nikon instant rebates extended in the US updated

Update: Nikon D7000 is now in stock and can be used in combination with the Nikon instant rebates.

Update #2: Nikon Canada will also have a rebate program - 80 CAD off any dual lens kit (effective till March 31st).

Nikon sent out a memo to US dealers today that the current Nikon instant rebates will be extended till February 26th, 2011. Multiple lens rebates can be combined with the purchase of one qualifying Nikon DSLR body. The Nikon rebate program started on March 1st, 2010. It is important to note that almost all other manufacturers have ended their rebate programs after the holidays. Several readers emailed me about a potential price increase on Nikon products on February 1st. I don't think this will happen (at least not on February 1st).
