Halcyon Habit from www.halcyonhabit.com sent me this interesting info: if you Google d700x site:www.nikonusa.com you will get two results (this search is looking for D700x keywords in all nikonusa.com pages):

This could mean that at some point of time Nikon USA had the following link online:

http://www.nikonusa.com/Find-Your-Nikon/Product/Digital-SLR/25442/D700X.html

Currently this URL points to the Nikon D3x product listing (because of the product #25442, the D700X.html portion of the URL is irrelevant) but Google cache did capture the full D700x URL:

If you search for D800 site:www.nikonusa.com you will get one result that currently links to a Nikon support page.

The part that is not clear is whether Google really cached this page/URL or just created this search result entry based on external links pointing to that D700x URL (for example the same D700x link was already discussed on Fred Miranda forum and maybe the Internet traffic to that URL from FM was enough for Google to create those entries). Unfortunately nobody knows for sure how Google search algorithm works and this D700x entry remains just another rumor.

Ok, I will take a risk this time and I will “predict” that Nikon will announce 2 new DSLR cameras tomorrow (February 21st, 2010) @ PMA. The announcement should be @ 9:00am PST (12:00 noon EST) time. This time I have no source or link to show, there will be no probability rating, etc. – as I said I am taking a risk with this “prediction” and I could be completely wrong. Just stay tuned tomorrow!

Lenses and Coolpix cameras are already announced. Only the DSLRs are missing. I cannot believe that Nikon will release more lenses @ PMA, even though the latest rumors point to more glass.

Breaking news: Another Nikon press conference next week?

I am not sure about the exact wording since Google cannot translate this page, but according to the tipster Nikon is suppose to have another press conference next week on February 23, 2010 (last day of PMA):

“Nikon will have a press conference regarding new camera products and their strategy on February 23.”

Here is the original source in Japanese. I have used this site as a source before on PhotoRumors and they have been accurate in the past.

This will be the first time Nikon will have three press conferences in a row.

Possibilities/guesses (unconfirmed):

The Nikkor 24-120 f/4 VR lens rumor said that it will be coming “soon”.
They could be another lens in addition to the Nikkor 24-120 f/4 VR.
This press conference will be different – maybe they will just announce that they are working on a new product line.
Nikon D700 replacement.
Completely new Nikon D900.
Nikon EVIL system.

That’s all I know for now. Stay tuned.

Update #2 Translation clarification (thanks dhchen):

That “strategy” seems to be specific at “domestic (Japan) selling strategy”. And they use “デジカメ新製品”(digital camera new products). In Japanese, デジカメ usually refers to “digital (point-and-shoot) camera”. So cannot be certain whether Nikon will announce new DSLR… And, no Canon or Sony mentioned.

Maybe they will announce plans for the Nikon EVIL system (see previous Nikon EVIL rumors here).

Update #3 another interpretation of the Japanese text (thanks C):

Nikon will “announce” new digital camera and selling strategy inside Japan. However, I should say the word “announce” in Japanese may have another meaning = “talk”. Therefore, it could be: Nikon just “talk” about their new digital cameras (that means the Coolpix just launched in PMA) and also the selling strategy inside Japan as well. This word is too ambiguous so I think it may not be firm enough to conclude a completely brand new Nikon digital camera will be announced on 23th Feb 2010.

Nikon D700 will get “bundled” before replacement

The French magazine Chasseur d’Image (in English) reports that Nikon will start giving Capture NX for free with every Nikon D700 purchase (my guess is that this combo will be valid only in France):

“In contrast, the D700 will soon be rewarded with a very attractive bundle, including Capture NX, which thereby becomes free time promotion.
Nikon has used in recent years to launch new round of July 15, we are sure we will see a D700 right now, but Capture NX! What prevent the purchaser of the current, already extremely powerful, do not feel cheated!”

Nikon Germany is including a MB-D10 with a new D700:

Nikon Italy offers a free SB-900 speedlight with a new D700:

The translations are horrible, but the bottom line is that we should expect some good deals on the Nikon D700 in the next few months before its replacement.

In the past few weeks I received several reports that Nikon D700 is not in stock in certain stores and some retailers cannot place new orders (those could be isolated cases, please don’t panic .

Taped Nikon cameras

First I have to mention that covering the camera name/logo/model with black tape is nothing new and many photographers have been doing it for a while. Having said that, here are some reports on taped-up Nikon gear from the past week – maybe someone will spot a difference from the existing models (I couldn’t):

The first one is from a dpreview gallery – it looks like a Nikon D700:

The second example is from the new Aperture 3 video made by Bill Frakes (1:04 mark into the video) – what I find interesting here is that only the model number is covered and not the Nikon label:

The third occurrence was submitted to me by a reader -the picture was taken yesterday on an Anti Olympics protest in Vancouver (we had a previous report that Nikon may be testing new bodies at the 2010 Winter Olympics):

“As I got closer I noticed it was clearly a Nikon with an added grip, it had the Nikon taped over and no model number on the side. By the looks of it it was clearly a full frame. I went to go take another picture, the guy noticed and hurried off into the sea of people.”

The above camera looks identical to the current D700:

“To be revealed” Nikon @PMA banner – Busted!

Letsgodigital has this banner on their front page of what appears to be a new DSLR to be revealed at PMA (the lens is definitely nothing new):

Now, this doesn’t appear to be a paid banner since it doesn’t link to any website. The image was clearly taken from the Nikon D3 press release kit. Letsgodigital recently moved to the “rumors business”, and I think they are just trying to get some attention.

I say this rumor is busted!

Nikon D700x makes its debut on TV with a price tag of $4,300

This one is weird.

On “The Suze Orman Show” (CNBC) from Jan. 23, 2010, a lady called in during the “Can I Afford It” segment. She wanted to purchase a Nikon D700x camera for $4300 (the show is based on callers who want to purchase expensive items and Suze Orman is giving them financial advice).

How did this make it to TV? Where is the price coming from? How about the picture? A prank from a NR reader?

The Nikon D700x sensor and Nikkor AF-S 18-50 f/3.5-4.5G lens rumors got busted. Busted because those images were published in the Japanese magazine CAPA and are not part of an upcoming Nikon brochure:

Here is a general translation of the page from another reader:

Every rumor is taken from just one of these predictions by three distinguished professional photographers you see on the lower left side of the page in the link Mr. Fool provided. On the upper right side, it reads “New Full frame camera will be the axis of Nikon’s new model in 2010″. They predict that D700X will be using the same cropped sensor as D3X and the price will be about 350k yen ($4000 US). They also predict that 14.2 mega pixel APS-C sensor ( the same one currently used on Sony A550) will be the new standard for Nikon’s APS-C camera, and the replacement of D90 (which they call D95) will adapt that sensor. According to them, it will have Full HD video. The least credible of all is listed lenses on the right page. The source simply states “we want attractive lenses to fully experience new high-megapixel full frame camera”. So lens part is more like a hope than a prediction.

The question is are those predictions based on facts or fiction?

Just a reminder that last week, a similar “rumor” came from another Japanese magazine for a new Ricoh GXR lens slide-in module (it was on the first page).

More rumors from China (Nikon D700x and Nikkor AF-S 18-50 f/3.6-4.5)

Two more interesting images appeared on xitek.com from the same user in the past hour (Google translation). The first looks like a larger crop (but a tiny image) of the previously reported Nikon D700x sensor:

The second one (Google translation) is for a new lens – Nikkor AF-S 18-50 f/3.5-4.5G:

“Our crystal ball tells us the D3x’s 24.5MP sensor is likely to show up in a consumer model soon.”

Nikon press conference scheduled for February 3rd, 2010

Nikon press conference is scheduled for February 3rd, 2010 – I am saying this with 100% confidence. As I mention before, this time I will not specify the country and location. This date also matches with the expected release of new Coolpix cameras on February 2nd.

In the past Nikon has not scheduled press conferences for their Coolpix line – they have done that only for new DSLR models and lenses. On February 3rd we will either have Coolpixes, DSLRs and lenses announced at the same time, or Nikon has a “special” Coolpix to talk about.

If the February 3rd event is Coolpix related (I doubt that), we may expect another press conference the week after.

Bob Krist wrote on his blog:

The interesting part is that there is a photo of him taking pictures through the window of a helicopter over Miami. You can see portion of the camera, but it is tough to get any details besides probably that it is full frame (based on the prism size). Check also the lens. This could be it!

Nikon D700s/D700x/D800/D900 confusion

In the past week I received so much conflicting information about different camera models possibilities (D700s/D700x/D800/D900) that at point I cannot say for sure what will be the actual number. And then today I found out why – the rumor is that this time Nikon has sent blank bodies out for testing, without model number and nobody from the testers really knows what the final version will be. I am not sure if they have done this in the past (Leica labeled the M9 as M8 when they sent it out for testing).

Whatever the model number, the consensus seems to be higher resolution and full HD video. I have not received ISO sensitivity, viewfinder coverage or any other details yet.

Jeff-c and Thom Hogan mentioned that Nikon rotates their model numbering scheme and we are currently in the “odd cycle” D700, D90, D3x, D5000, D3000, D3s, D300s. The next one is the “even cycle” D4, D400, D600, D800. If this is true, D900 could be the real name, especially if it has higher MP that the D700.

Thom Hogans predicts release in the first two weeks of February. PMA starts on February 21st, 2010. Michel Lammerse posted online his own predictions of what will be coming from Nikon.

Nikon D700 is being phased out

The rumor is that at least one Nikon distributor in the Middle East has semi-officially announced that the Nikon D700 has been “pulled out” because of the upcoming replacement that should be released in “the next few weeks”. I was told that stores cannot order the D700 from their supplier in that particular country. The only additional details I got: the new camera will have a double CF card slots (update: at that point it is not clear if it will have dual CF or one CF and one SD card slots) and 1080 video.

NPS survey in Europe – all about the D700 replacement

Update: this survey is now sent to registered Nikon users worldwide (not only to NPS). I will publish my own D700 replacement survey later on today.

NPS members in Europe received an email survey from Nikon today. The first few questions were pretty standard (what camera you have, what features are important to you, any feedback to Nikon, etc). After going through the rest of the survey, it was clear that this whole campaign was created to gather information/data for the Nikon D700 replacement. Here are some of the questions (those are not direct quotations):

What improvements you would like to see in the D700 or why did you not purchase one?
How likely it is that you will purchase a Nikon D700?
What would you photograph with a FX camera?
What are the most important features of a FX camera?
Are you interested in a FX camera (vs. DX camera)?
What is the largest print size you use?
Will you purchase a DSLR in the next 12 months?
There were few questions about pixel count – how important it is, etc. One of the example question was about a 15 MP and 25MP resolutions – not sure if they picked those numbers randomly or there is a reason behind it.

Now, I am not sure if this is a good or bad news – is Nikon just starting now to think about the D700 replacement? Maybe they just want to be sure that what they have in their labs is what people would buy.

Nikon D700 discontinued, price going up in China?

Update: Translation by a native Chinese speaker (thanks Pat):

This rumor is coming from www.sina.com.cn. The Google translation as aways doesn’t make much sense, but the article is about the price of the Nikon D700 going up in China as a result of the “announced cut-off”. It is not clear (at least to me) what this “announced cut-off” is. It could be that the D700 production is suspended or maybe even the D700 is about to be discontinued:

Nikon D700 replacement timeframe

Rumor: Nikon D800 instead of D700s/x

PhotographyBay received a tip that Nikon will not be updating the D700, but instead will release a completely new model – Nikon D800 with the following specs:

Video mode 1080p video recording (full HD)
High resolution 24.5 MP
High frame rate: 7 fps without battery grip (similar to D300s)
51-area Nikon Multi-CAM 3500FX (same technology as D3X)
Expected to be released before the end of the year

At that point I do not have any reliable info on that rumor. All sources point that D700 will not be updated anytime soon. Maybe this really means a new D800 that could coexists with the D700.
