Nauticam released an updated version NA-D7000V of their NA-D7000 underwater housing for Nikon D7000. The new version (model Number: 17206) features enhanced control access and HDMI connection compatibility. The depth rating is 100m, the retail price will be $3300, shipping will start on January 1, 2012.

Unveiled with great fanfare at the 2010 DEMA Show, the original NA-D7000 housing grew to be one Nauticam’s most successful offerings. A little over one year later, Nauticam is proud to announce an update that includes significant ergonomic improvements and new accessory compatibility.

Nikon D7000

The Nikon D7000 needs no introduction. The camera is already one of the leading underwater options and the best choice for Nikon DX users. The D7000 boasts an impressive number of advanced features at a very affordable price point. With its 16.2 MP CMOS sensor, 1080p HD video with manual exposure control, and 39-point AF system, the D7000 is an excellent choice for the advanced enthusiast.

Unmatched Ergonomics

In keeping with Nauticam philosophy, the NA-D7000V housing continues to improve new products by building on previous innovations. NA-D7000V inherits the outstanding ergonomics of its predecessor, and adds access to the multi-controller, “OK”, and “Info” buttons at the right grip. Now nearly every function on the D7000 can be controlled from the housing handles!

Continued Innovation

A new lever to disengage the housing’s zoom and focus control makes camera loading with a lens attached easier than ever! While no control levels required presetting on previous housings, zoom or focus gears could occasionally snag on the control assembly. This new assembly eliminates inconvenience, and allows faster setup.

Stainless steel housing handle brackets are included to provide additional security when heavy strobes or video lights are attached, and provide lanyard mounting points.

Patented Two-Stage Shutter Release Lever

This mechanical lever greatly enhances tactile feel of the half-press and full-press positions of the camera shutter release button, allowing precise focus control, and fewer accidental shutter actuations.

Locking Housing Latches

Easy to use locking latches are simple to close with only minimal hand strength required, and are protected from accidental opening by a pushbutton lock. This new closure method is not only easier to operate, but reduces the overall size of the housing.

Patented Locking Port Release Lever & Locking Extension Rings

The acclaimed patented Nauticam Locking Port Release is incorporated into the NA-D7000V housing. Lens ports are inserted straight into the port mount, eliminating the twisting or threading actions that can extrude dry o-rings. Once seated, the large red port lock lever is engaged, securely locking the port in place. To remove a lens port, the silver unlock button is pressed, the port lock lever rotated to the outboard position, and the port is pulled straight out of the housing.
Nauticam also features the industry’s only locking extension ring system as standard equipment, securely fixing large dome ports even when mounted with an extension ring.
NA-D7000V is compatible with Nauticam SLR housing accessories, allowing use of an extensive line of lenses, ports, port adapters, lens gears, and viewfinders.

Patented Expanded Viewfinders

Nauticam’s highly acclaimed optional 180º and 45º viewfinders provide a crystal clear life size view of the camera’s optical viewfinder through a diving mask. The patented external dioptric adjustment allows eye relief to be fine tuned in water. High quality optics eliminate distortion and keep color fringing to an absolute minimum. The edge-to-edge, magnified viewfinder image makes confirming fine focus and checking corner composition an absolute breeze.

Port Adapters for Other Housing Lines

Nauticam offers a full range of port adapters allowing existing housing owners to use their current ports, reducing the cost of switching to a Nauticam housing. Port Adapters are available for Aquatica, Ikelite, Inon, Nexus M5, Nexus M6, Sea & Sea NX, Seacam, Subal Version 3, Subal Version 4, and Zillion lens ports.

Optical Flash Connectors for Inon S-TTL, and Sea & Sea DS-TTL

A variety of optically fired underwater strobes yield reliable, totally automatic flash exposures via fiber optic cables with Nauticam housings. Inon Z-240, D-2000, S-2000, Sea & Sea YS-110 Alpha, and YS-01 strobes provide automated lighting, precisely reproducing the camera’s onboard flash at a proportionally greater intensity. This system yields accurate TTL flash performance with no electrical sync cables to flood! Nikonos, Ikelite, and S6 style flash connectors are available as optional accessories for customers utilizing legacy electrically fired strobe systems.

Rubberized Ergonomic Handles

Nauticam uses a sophisticated over-mold process to produce extremely comfortable and secure rubberized ergonomic handgrips. Handles are available in two sizes to accommodate customers with different size hands, and spacers are available with the housing for cold-water divers.

Proven Construction Materials

Nauticam Housings are machined from a solid block of seawater resistant aluminum alloy, then hard anodized making them impervious to corrosion. All hardware is marine grade stainless steel. Acrylic windows protected with a scratch resistant material.

Today Nikon released new firmware updates for the Nikon D5100 and D7000 cameras. I actually never expected them to released another firmware update for the D7000 more than a year after it was announced.

Fixes in the Nikon D5100 v1.01 firmware update (download link):

An error recognizing some memory cards has been addressed.

When Selective color from the retouch menu is performed on a picture taken with the image quality set to NEF (RAW)+JPEG and an image size of M or S, the edges of the image may not have changed color. This issue has been resolved.

When Metering was set to Matrix metering, the exposure mode set to M (Manual), and the HDR exposure differential set to Auto, the exposure differential was fixed at a value equivalent to 2 EV. This has been changed to enable automatic adjustment of exposure differential so that it is appropriate for the scene.

Fixes in the Nikon D7000 v1.03 firmware updated (download link):

An error recognizing some memory cards has been addressed.

The following issues occurred when the mode dial was rotated from U1 or U2 to another shooting mode or from another shooting mode to U1 or U2 when the power was off or when the exposure meters are off (Auto meter-off). These issues were resolved.

- A new folder is sometimes created despite the fact that the current folder does not yet contain 999 files and none of the files are numbered “9999”.

- The number of remaining exposures may not be displayed as specified in the settings.

- The setting for Role played by card in Slot 2 may change between Overflow, Backup, and RAW Slot 1- JPEG Slot 2.

An issue where Battery info in the setup menu sometimes showed sufficient remaining charge even when the remaining charge for the AA batteries inserted in the MB-D11 battery pack was low has been resolved.

An issue where a saved photo may not have been displayed properly when a movie was displayed in playback mode while saving the photo has been resolved.

An issue where zoom in or zoom out may not have performed properly when the playback zoom in or playback zoom out button was pressed while in Live view has been resolved.

The message displayed when the internal memory of the Wireless Transmitter WT-4 is formatted from the Format transmitter's memory under Device settings in Wireless transmitter of the camera’s setup menu was changed from Done to Built-in memory formatted.

Another guest post on the making of this video from Cardiac Kid Productions:

I was asked to shoot and edit a music video for the Island/Def Jam band Parachute. It was to be a concert style music video for a song called “What I Know” off of their forthcoming (and since released) 2nd full length studio album “The Way It Was”. The band was on the tour with the Plain White T's at the time and they were playing at The Pageant in St. Louis, MO. The small budget and requests from the venue to not bring in a camera “larger than a baby's head” pointed me towards my Nikon D7000.

I had never done a live concert music video before. I had taped many live concerts, but never with the focus being on getting footage for one studio track. Normally when I shoot a performance based music video, the shoot takes a full day and we do 20+ takes of the song.

The bulk of the video was going to be the band performing the song from stage, with some b-roll of the band loading in their gear and hanging out backstage. For this video I had to shoot the takes of the band performing the song during the sound check. I had about twenty five minutes to work with and we got through the song a total of four times. The first time was mainly a practice to see where I could be on stage and how I would move around without bumping into the band members. I was using a Steadicam Merlin on all four takes. The lighting for this first take had a different look than the other three takes. The colored stage lights were off and the white house lights were turned on.

The other three takes were done with the house lights still up, but the stage lights on. The stage lights were mostly reds with some blues in there. I used a Nikkor 12-24mm f4 for the sound check takes. I shot the live concert footage with a modified Letus shoulder rig a Nikkor 17-55mm f2.8. I used the full Letus shoulder rig and the 17-55mm lens for all the off stage b-roll. I also used a Letus Hawk viewfinder for all the non-Steadicam work. I couldn't have shot the outside footage without it. All of the concert footage was shot wide open. I was at 800 ISO for the sound check footage and 1250 ISO for the live concert footage. I shot all the footage in 1080p/24fps in the “high quality” setting. I shot in the “Standard” picture control mode and with the sharpness turned down.

All of the b-roll was shot documentary style. My experience in shooting weddings with my D90 helped there. You have to see a moment about to happen and then capture it as it's happening.
A good example of this is the guitar player Nate taking the lid off of his pedal board at :31 in. It's cool to capture those shots naturally, as opposed to asking the talent to try to do it a couple times so you can get your shot. Sometimes your focus isn't razor sharp, but capturing that action with a little x axis movement is cooler, in my opinion.

Since I was shooting on my D7000 I had to add some time-lapses to the video. I'm bad at keeping track of and writing down my intervals, but I think the crowd coming into the venue was one shot every five seconds. There were some VIPs that were let into the venue early. So I watched how long it took the average person to get from the door to the floor and it was about ten seconds, so I figured five sounded like a good interval. I let the time-lapse go for over an hour, but the portion used in the video was about twenty minutes in real time.

I edited the video in Adobe Premiere CS5. I did all the color correction in Premiere. The main challenge there was getting the sound check takes to look at pink and purple as the live take. The production company that I was working with did some After Effects work (blurring out signs) for legal reasons. Overall, it was a fun experience. I think next time I will try to shoot with multiple cameras during the live set.

People have told me that you can't use an HDSLR for “professional” video work. Everybody likes to mention that one episode of “House”. “See look what you can do with an HDSLR!” I'm guilty of it too. I put it on my iPhone so I can stick it in the face of the naysayers. But at the end of the day, most of us don't shoot for network television, and we are shooting with an HDSLR not because it's artsy and were trying to fit into tight spaces, because we don't have the budget to rent a RED or an AF-100.

When I'm not shooting music videos, I'm shooting web commercials for small businesses and I use my D7000 on 99% of those shoots. These are the real world applications of the HDSLRS. I needed to buy an HD camera and $1200 for a D7000 body sounded better than $5000 for an HD video camera. I think it will be interesting to see how Nikon moves forward now that they are...like it or not...a digital motion picture camera company.

Equipment used: Letus & Steadicam Merlin.

You can download it from Nikon Europe support website (now available also on Nikon US site). List of fixes after the break:

Noise reduction processing is now performed with shutter speeds slower than 1 s (previously 8 s) when On is selected for Long Exp. NR in order to reduce the bright spots that occur with shooting still images at slow shutter speeds.

An issue that prevented the opening of movies recorded with the D7000 in certain movie editing software applications has been resolved.

When the camera was connected to a television via the A/V cable and a movie was played back, playback was normal the first time but when the movie was played two or more times, the sound was played back at extremely low volume and seemed to play intermittently. This issue has been resolved.

When white balance for RAW images created using the camera’s image overlay function was fine tuned with Capture NX 2 or ViewNX 2, the images acquired a magenta cast. This issue has been resolved.

An issue that caused 0.00” to be displayed for heading information when the GP-1 GPS unit was connected to the camera has been resolved so that ---.-- is now displayed.

When Viewfinder virtual horizon was the role assigned to the Fn button or the preview button and the applicable button was pressed, errors in the virtual horizon indicator were displayed. This issue has been resolved.

The following errors in Help displays have been resolved:

“Maximum sensitivity” help was displayed for shooting menu>ISO sensitivity settings>On or Off help.

German help displayed “Select focus priority for AF-S mode.” for Custom Settings>a1: AF-C priority selection help.

"As I Lay Dying" Behind the Scenes from Teradek on Vimeo.

McFarland & Pecci Choose Teradek Wireless HD Monitoring for As I Lay Dying Shoot

Music video directors Ian McFarland & Mike Pecci have built a reputation for using the cinematic arts and sciences to translate the darkest moments of humanity into a visual experience. Their style is gritty, raw, sometimes controversial, and always compelling. Their most recent project is the video for Anodyne Sea, the latest single from metal band As I Lay Dying’s new album The Powerless Rise.

The Anodyne Sea video tackles the issue of free speech and the entire video is shot from the POV perspective of drummer Jordan Mancino as the band is kidnapped from a radio station by an oppressive local militia. Technology played a crucial role in McFarland & Pecci achieving their vision. The video is shot using a custom designed helmet-cam rig with a Nikon D7000 HD-SLR camera and Teradek Cube for wireless video monitoring.

Both the Nikon D7000 and the Teradek Cube are cutting-edge video products. McFarland & Pecci chose the Nikon D7000 because its small size, large sensor with 1080p recording, wide range of lenses, user adjustable video output over HDMI, excellent image quality in low light (with an ISO range of up to 6400), autofocus while recording video, and reliability. Director Mike Pecci comments “The camera took quite a beating. We had it mounted to the face of our camera operator (and co-director Ian McFarland) as he was pulled down hallways, thrown into vans, and dragged through the San Diego desert! The Nikon stayed with us with no crashes from impact!”

The cornerstone of the on-set workflow was the use of the Teradek Cube Encoder and Decoder for wireless video monitoring. The Teradek Cube is small (about the size of a deck of cards) and weighs only 6 ounces, meaning the encoder could be mounted directly to the helmet-cam rig. The Cube Encoder streamed HD video over WiFi to a Cube Decoder mounted on a handheld, battery-powered 7” Marshall monitor. This allowed complete freedom of movement for both the cameraman and the director. “When we came up with the concept for this video I knew that we were going to have trouble finding some sort of wireless monitor set-up that would work with a DSLR. I called rental companies all over the country, and spent time on the phone talking about UHF transmitters, HDMI to standard def converters, and awkward battery belts. Working with Teradek was a relief because we didn't need all of that heavy gear. A tiny transmitter, a wi-fi hub, and we had a HD signal being broadcast to either our laptop or handheld monitor. We used it both on set and out in the middle of a San Diego desert and it allowed me to see what was happening while it was happening.” says Pecci.

The use of the Teradek Cube Encoder and Decoders combined with the Nikon D7000 allowed McFarland & Pecci to create a highly stylized and compelling rock video in a time-frame and on a budget that would have been impossible just two years ago. Director Ian McFarland has the last word, “We are always looking for new and exciting technology that will help us translate our crazy ideas to film. It's extremely reassuring as independent filmmakers to have the opportunity to work with companies like Teradek and Nikon, who not only believe in us, and supporting new filmmakers, but also are working on technology that is making our workflow easier.”

The finished video:

Chipworks.com is doing something that I always wanted to do - to teardown a camera apart. Few weeks ago they took a Nikon D7000 and documented the guts of the camera. The interesting part? The sensor model IMX071 is made by Sony (direct link to image). This is probably not a surprise, but till now I could not find a proof besides the identical DxOMark score of the D7000 and Sony a580.

There has been some speculations in the past that Nikon recently started producing their own sensors. For the D3100, Nikon described the sensor as:

“The D3100 is equipped with a new Nikon DX-format CMOS image sensor and a new image-processing engine, EXPEED 2, both developed by Nikon”.

Tetsuro Goto mentioned something similar in this interview:

“We have a longstanding relationship with Sony. If the sensors for Nikon D3s, D3 and D700 are designed by Nikon, Nikon D3x and those of the small APS-C sensors are from Sony. We want to use our own sensors in SLRs most popular [small sensor APS-C, Ed], as the performance of our sensors are better. However, it will take some time as it takes to achieve economies of scale.”

I have been holding off to write about this issue because I wasn't sure if this is a wide-spread problem or just a defective batch of cameras. Today, Nikon Japan published a service announcement and it seems that a new firmware upgrade for the Nikon D7000 will fix this issue (update: the service message is now published in English, also available on Nikon USA):

"We have received reports from some users of the Nikon D7000 digital SLR camera regarding the occurrence of noticeable bright spots with movie recording under certain conditions.

Nikon believes that these bright spots are not normally noticeable, and therefore do not indicate a problem with practical use. However, with further investigation of the reports received, we have confirmed that bright spots may be noticeable when recording movies of especially dark scenes or subjects.

In order to provide our customers with better products, Nikon is currently preparing to release a firmware upgrade with measures to reduce the occurrence of these bright spots for the D7000. Further details will be announced at a later date."

Nauticam NA- D7000: Innovation Underwater

Nauticam proudly announces the newest addition to the Nauticam family of innovative, ergonomic, high-quality camera housings. Come see (and handle) the Nauticam NA-D7000 for the Nikon D7000 in Booth 3838 at the DEMA Show in Las Vegas, Nevada November 17-20, 2010.

The NA-D7000 is packed with new features including new locking latches, a new lens release lever and flash activation button, a new patented two stage shutter release, and an improved rear command dial control, all in a smaller package*.

Nikon D7000

The newest release SLR offering from Nikon, the D7000 boasts an impressive number of advanced features at a very affordable price point. With its 16.2 MP CMOS sensor, 1080p HD video with manual exposure control, and 39-point AF system, the D7000 is an excellent choice for the advanced enthusiast. DxOMark just awarded the D7000 the second highest rating of any cropped sensor camera ever tested.

Nauticam is poised to take the D7000 to new depths and on new adventures with the NA-D7000.
The NA-D7000 housing inherits numerous innovations from earlier Nauticam housings like the piano keys which first appeared on the NA-7D housing, an improved version of the locking latches from the NA-550D housing, and the patented Nauticam port locking system. As with all Nauticam housings, comfortable rubberized handles, and innovative ergonomic access to key camera controls are standard.

Unmatched Ergonomics

In keeping with Nauticam philosophy, the NA-D7000 housing continues to improve new products while building on previous successes and innovations. Notable examples are the newly redesigned rear command dial control, and a piano key for easily accessing the video activation button.

The playback button has been moved out to a paddle lever on the left side of the housing, offering instant access from the handle by the user’s thumb. Each control for critical camera functions is designed to allow the underwater photographer unfettered access without removing their hands from the handles.

Continued Innovation

Another innovative advancement is Nauticam’s patented two-stage shutter release lever. This mechanical lever greatly enhances tactile feel of the half-press and full-press positions of the camera shutter release button, allowing precise focus control, and fewer accidental shutter actuations.

New, easy to use locking latches are easy to close with only minimal hand strength required, and are protected from accidental opening by a locking detent. This new closure method is not only easier to operate, but reduces the overall size of the housing.

A new flash activation button and a lens release button allowing lens changes while a zoom gear is attached without opening the housing back are standard equipment.

Patented Locking Port Release Lever & Locking Extension Rings

The acclaimed patented Nauticam Locking Port Release is incorporated into the NA-D7000 housing. Lens ports are inserted straight into the port mount, eliminating the twisting or threading actions that can extrude dry o-rings. Once seated, the large red port lock lever is engaged, securely locking the port in place. To remove a lens port, the silver unlock button is pressed, the port lever rotated to the outboard position, and the port is pulled straight out of the housing.
Nauticam also features the industry’s only locking extension ring system as standard equipment, securely fixing large dome ports even when mounted with an extension ring.
NA-D7000 id compatible with the same accessories as all Nauticam housings, allowing use of an extensive line of lenses, ports, port adapters, lens gears, and viewfinders.

Patented Expanded Viewfinder

The optional Nauticam accessory viewfinder provides a crystal clear life size view of the camera’s optical viewfinder through a diving mask. The patented external dioptric adjustment allows eye relief to be fine tuned in water. The high quality optics eliminate distortion and keep color fringing to an absolute minimum.
