Nikon D700 firmware update v1.03, ViewNX v2.3.2 released

The previously reported firmware update 1.03 for Nikon D700 is now official. The new A1.03, B1.02 version contains only one fix:

An issue that, in some very rare cases, caused images to be extremely under-exposed has been resolved.

Nikon also released ViewNX 2.3.2 with only one fix:

When printing images with Print As: in the Printer Setup dialogue box set to Full Page and the Print Information box checked, images were printed with excessive margins, regardless of the options selected for printing in the Advanced Print Information Settings dialogue box. This issue has been resolved.

A member of the German forum dslr-forum.de received his new Nikon D700 camera and noticed that the installed firmware version A was 1.03. The latest officially announced firmware update for the D700 was A/B 1.02. Maybe Nikon is about to release the new 1.03 version?

Rumor: Nikon D700 discontinued in Canada

Update: all Canadian dealers received an email yesterday from Nikon that the D700 is discontinued as there is no stock nationwide.

Nikon D700 was listed as discontinued in Japan over a month ago, probably because of the new battery regulations in Japan. In the US, the price of the D700 dropped by $500. The latest rumor I received is that the D700 is also officially discontinued in Canada:

I work at a small photo retailer in Canada, and we just received word from our Nikon rep that the D700 is no longer in production and is officially discontinued in Canada. Nikon Canada is out of stock of bodies and won't be getting more from Japan. Subsidiaries in other countries may still have stock in warehouses but this stock will not be replenished.

This is another high ISO comparison between the Nikon D700 and a pre-production D800 (see also this related post). Here are details from the reader who shot the images (click on samples for larger view):

Here are some noise comparisons I have made in all ISO levels between D700 & D800 from ISO1600 to ISO 25600 with Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8 lens at f/4. The crop area is in the almost extreme left of the frame and does not include the focus point, so it is not for resolution comparison, only for noise. The D800 files are downsized at 57% in PS to the D700 size, then cropped to 1:1 for comparison as same size pictures. I used RAWTherapee because ViewNX uses the noise reduction settings of the cameras. As ICC profile for D800 I have selected D7000 profile.

As I mentioned a week ago, the US price of the Nikon D700 is suppose to drop $500 in March. The first drop of $200 is already on Amazon (by Cameta Camera). The question is where are the other $300?

In March, the price of the Nikon D700 will drop to $2199.95 in the US. This is $500 reduction from the curent $2,699.95. The price in Europe was already reduced few days after the D800 announcement. The Nikon D700 will be available for sale at least for few more months, maybe even till the end of 2012 (considering that the D90 is still listed on Nikon USA website and available for sale).

I was told that the D700 will go down in price in the next few days - in France for example, the price is expected to drop from the current EUR 2,100 to EUR 1,800. I have no confirmation about US prices yet.

Nikon D700 and D300s are now officially listed as discontinued on Nikon's website.

The surprise here is the phase out of the D300s, because I have not received any reliable information about a potential replacement.

I believe the D700 will be available for sale for at least few more months after the D800 announcement.

Update: I was told that the Nikon D700 is no longer on display at the Nikon flagship store in Ginza.

Nikon USA increases refurbished camera prices

Nikon USA just raised the prices for some of their refurbished DSLR cameras (I am not sure about lenses). Some examples:

Nikon D3s refurbished price went up from $4,159.96 to $4,679.96 (new D3s costs $5,199.95)
Nikon D3x refurbished price went up from $6,399,96 to $7,199.96 (new D3x costs $7,999.00)
Nikon D700 refurbished price went up from $2,150 to $2,429.96 (new D700 costs $2,699.95)

Lately I have not seen a lot of refurbished pro level equipment at B&H and Adorama. Right now B&H has a refurbished Nikon 24mm f/1.4 lens for $1,839.95 (new 24/1.4 costs $1,999).

Popphoto has an interesting article about US military photographers. The picture above is of a Nikon D700 with a Nightstalker II night vision system by Tactical Solutions LLC:

"Other lessons involve proper techniques for using cameras in conjunction with night-vision gear. Simple but potentially serious errors include failing to turn off the camera’s autofocus-assist lamp, which can overwhelm night-vision users with brightness and reveal the unit’s position to the enemy. Cameras with night-vision lenses lack AF systems—they focus manually. And setting exposure for night-vision cameras can be tricky."

Nikon D700, D300s and other products no longer shipping in Japan

Nikon Japan announced today that it has stopped shipments of the following products in Japan as a result of a new Electrical Appliance and Material Safety Law:

Nikon D300s and D700
Wireless Transmitter WT-3
Multi-Power Battery Pack MB-D10, MB-D200, MB-D80
Battery Chamber Cover BL-3 (※ 2)
Rechargeable Li-ion Battery EN-EL9

Overseas shipment of those products is not impacted. Nikon also mentioned that the following products are also not compatible with the new Electrical Appliance and Material Safety Law but they will continue to sell them in Japan:

The 360 Project (with 48 Nikon D700 cameras)

Similar to 360 degrees “surround picture” at the MTV Awards two years ago, here is another project with 48 Nikon D700 cameras arranged in a circle to create "The Matrix" style images.

The 360 Project - Behind the Scenes from Ryan Enn Hughes on Vimeo.

“The 360 Project” is an exploration into the crossroads of photography and motion pictures. It is a study of peak dance movements, captured simultaneously by 48 cameras aligned in a circle.

There are two components to “The 360 Project” – “Ballet 360” features ballerinas from Canada’s National Ballet School, “Krump 360” features dancers from Northbuck Krump. The two styles of dance represent polemic perspectives in both technique and origin – one is beauty, the other beast.

The resulting images resemble a type of digital statue – a frozen, peak moment, embodying the essence of each dance form in 360 degrees.

Last week I posted about the Nikon D700 being out of stock in all major online retailers in the US. A reader just informed me that BestBuy got some in stock and are selling them pretty cheap: $2267.99 for body only which is the lowest price I've seen since the earthquake in Japan.

Today the Nikon D700 is 3 years old (announced on July 1st, 2008). Happy Birthday D700!

A quick look at Nikon's website confirms that the D700 is currently the oldest DSLR camera in their lineup (even the already replaced D90 was announced after the D700). It is still hard for me to believe that a D700 replacement will not be announced till 2012... this is one of the cases where I hope I am wrong Anyway, the D700 is still great camera and it will be for years to come.
