In October of 2009 I deployed to the Helmand Province, Afghanistan as a machine gunner in a Security Company. We provided security to Combat Engineers who were building and repairing roads and convoy security from base to base. Our missions ranged in time length from overnight to weeks at a time on average, with the longest being a month long mission.

During the deployment I purchased a Nikon D5000 with the 18-55mm Nikkor kit lens as well as the 55-200mm Nikkor in December of 2009 as a present to myself. I used parachute cord to secure my small camera bag in the turret with me. In the bag I packed the camera body, the two lenses, two batteries and charger. Fortunately there was room for the manual because it was my first DSLR. The camera stayed right by my side next to where my M4 service rifle was mounted. I used the 12v power in the truck to charge my batteries.

I bought the camera with the intention of documenting my own experience in Afghanistan and to photograph our life as Marines on base, the missions and the locals. Helmand Province is located in the southwest of Afghanistan and is comprised of open deserts, farmers in small villages with lush farm land and markets in the larger cities. The camera experienced both sides of the temperature spectrum with highs over 110 Fahrenheit to lows in the teens as well as sandstorms and what we lovingly refer to as moon dust. Imagine 3-4 inches of dust with the consistency of flour and you have moon dust. It stays in the air and sticks to everything.

From December 2009 to April of 2010 I took roughly 12,000 photos without any problems during my deployment. Nikon did not design the D5000 with surviving the harsh environment of a place like Afghanistan in mind. Since it's purchase in December I have over 49,000 shutter actuation. The Nikon D5000 is said to have a shutter life of at least 100,000 and I believe it. The best camera to have is the one you have with you and my D5000 goes everywhere with me. I know I can always count on it to produce great images."

Distortion control data upgrade for D90 and D5000 released

Today Nikon released distortion control data upgrade for the D90 and D5000 cameras:

"The Distortion Control Data firmware upgrade is available for Nikon D90 and D5000 cameras only. This is used to correct barrel and pincushion distortion during shooting and editing. This may be loaded into cameras that support distortion control."

Nikon Japan has a listing of all discontinued Nikon products. The latest addition? Nikon D5000:

The next candidate for this list is the Nikon D90 (probably in a matter of weeks, maybe even days).

A Nikon D5000 replacement is expected soon and could be announced with the Coolpix refresh in mid-February.

A month ago I did mention that the Nikon D5000 will be discontinued and now B&H confirms it - both Nikon D5000 kit and body only are listed as discontinued on their website:

At that point I have not received any reliable information about a potential D5000 replacement (D5100 should basically be a D3100 with a swivel display).

Nikon D3000 and D5000

I got multiple reports from different countries that the Nikon D3000 and D5000 DSLR cameras are being phased out and will soon be discontinued. Some retailers were already told that there will be no future shipments of those models. The Nikon D90 and D300s will continue to be sold throughout the holiday season.

It is not clear if Nikon will introduce a new camera to replace the D5000 (it should basically be a D3100 with a swivel LCD display). Maybe Nikon will remove one of its DSLR models all together in order to free up some production capacity for a potential new model (EVIL?).

The D3000 was released in July of 2009, three months after the D5000.

Official press statement for the second Nikon D5000 recall:

Nikon would like to confirm that it has contacted a small number of D5000 customers within Europe that have previously sent their cameras in for repair following the recent Service Notice, asking them to re-send their cameras in to their local service centre for further repair work. Subsequent to the publishing of the Service Notice and the adoption of the preventative maintenance, an additional and enhanced procedure was developed. A small number of D5000 cameras in Europe were not initially treated with this enhanced procedure so we are asking customers to return them to us for a short time. The process of repairing affected D5000s is being handled in a fast and efficient manner and we are committed to maintaining this level of service so that the issue is fully resolved within the near future.

In addition, Nikon recommends that all D5000 customers check the updated list of “Affected Product Serial Numbers”, further to the following Service Notice as additional product serial numbers have been added.

Another Nikon D5000 recall or just a scam?

It seems that Nikon D5000 owners that have sent their equipment to Nikon for repair and got it back (see Nikon D5000 service advisory) started to receive letters from Nikon stating that it is “strongly recommended” to return the camera for "an additional and enhanced procedure." Here is a copy of the letter:

There is an update on Nikon's website from August 12th (yesterday):

"As of August 12, 2009 additional product serial numbers have been added to the list of “Affected Product Serial Numbers”. If you have previously checked your camera’s serial number prior to August 12, 2009 we recommend that you try again with the updated list."

"An electronic component related to power control in some Nikon D5000 digital SLR cameras does not meet factory specifications and may, in certain circumstances, prevent the camera from turning on, thus preventing operation of the camera thereafter."

I got some information about an upcoming Nikon D5000 rebate in Australia (valid: June 15 - July 30, 2009):

D5000 Body Only : A$ 100
D5000 + any AFS lens: A$ 150
D5000 + 18-55VR +55-200VR: A$ 200

Nikon D5000 was released less than two months ago.

There is also a report that the Nikon D5000, D3 and D3x prices were reduced in Canada at the beginning of this month:

According to Gizmodo's anonymous tipster, the newly released Nikon D5000 will be availble in Best Buy stores this Friday (April 24th) - a week before the officially announced release date of May 1st.

Nikon D90: another price increase (UK) and LV bug

Amateurphotographer reports another 10% price increase of the Nikon D90 in the UK starting next month (May, 2009). The reason - exchange rate fluctuations. Expect this price increase to trickle-down to other countries as well. Now, the D5000 pricing will not be so close to the D90 price.

According to this post in dpreview, Nikon support confirmed the D90 LV bug "in LV mode the shutterspeed is frozen at the value taken at the moment of activation" and a patch is expected soon.
