Nikon D3x now officially discontinued

I already mentioned that Nikon D3x is out of production and today Nikon Japan officially listed the camera as discontinued. Obviously the D3x and its price tag of $7999 doesn't make any sense after the D800 announcement.

The Nikon D3s was already listed as discontinued a month ago, the D700 got discontinued in January. Please note that some countries may continue to sell those models depending on their local inventory.

The website f64.ro lists the Nikon D3x as "out of production". They were also the first to mark the D3s as "out of production" back in December, 2011. Few months later the camera was listed as discontinued in Japan and the US. The Nikon D3x never dropped in price like the D700 and is still listed for $7,999.95.

Nikon USA increases refurbished camera prices

Nikon USA just raised the prices for some of their refurbished DSLR cameras (I am not sure about lenses). Some examples:

Nikon D3s refurbished price went up from $4,159.96 to $4,679.96 (new D3s costs $5,199.95)
Nikon D3x refurbished price went up from $6,399,96 to $7,199.96 (new D3x costs $7,999.00)
Nikon D700 refurbished price went up from $2,150 to $2,429.96 (new D700 costs $2,699.95)

Lately I have not seen a lot of refurbished pro level equipment at B&H and Adorama. Right now B&H has a refurbished Nikon 24mm f/1.4 lens for $1,839.95 (new 24/1.4 costs $1,999).

I am not sure why, but Amazon Germany doesn't sell the Nikon D3x any longer:

I got few reports that some smaller dealers in Europe have also removed the D3x from their catalogs. In the US, the D3x is in stock almost everywhere.

Nikon UK is out of Nikon D700 brochures (and D90 brochures of course):

Ritz Camera did not list Nikon D700 and D5000 in their Holiday/Winter 2011 Imaging Book (all other Nikon cameras are listed, including the D3s/D3x/D300s/D7000).

Update: btw, talking about Sony - the new Sony EVIL camera just leaked (the official announcement is tomorrow).

Already wrote about that on PhotoRumors.com, but I think that this is an important development and should be on NikonRumors as well: Sony α900 is now officially discontinued (Sony α900 was released 3 months before the Nikon D3x which was announced on December 1st, 2008):

Maybe Sony has a new and improved sensor for the α900 replacement.

Maybe Sony will let Nikon use and tweak this new sensor just like they did with the α900 sensor.

Maybe this will lead to a new 24MP DSLR camera from Nikon.

Popular Photography named the Nikon D3X as its camera of the year for 2009. In the same article they mentioned:

"Our crystal ball tells us the D3x’s 24.5MP sensor is likely to show up in a consumer model soon."

Not sure how accurate their crystal ball is.

Nikon rebates (Australia & Canada)

I got some information about an upcoming Nikon D5000 rebate in Australia (valid: June 15 - July 30, 2009):

D5000 Body Only : A$ 100
D5000 + any AFS lens: A$ 150
D5000 + 18-55VR +55-200VR: A$ 200

Nikon D5000 was released less than two months ago.

There is also a report that the Nikon D5000, D3 and D3x prices were reduced in Canada at the beginning of this month:

Nikon D5000 + 18-55VR +55-200VR for C$ 999 (C$ 60 less than the original price)

Just received the full text of the Nikon D3/D3X extended service program in Canada:

Thank you for purchasing your new Nikon D3/D3X camera. In appreciation, and at no charge to you, Nikon Canada Inc. (“Nikon”) offers an initial Service Program (the “Service Program”) described below for your new Nikon D3/D3X.

Services:

• Unlimited preventative maintenance cleanings – Image Sensor Cleaning

• Two comprehensive check-ups and cleanings; one in the first year of ownership and one in the second

• Routine adjustments as necessary resulting from normal usage, excluding cosmetic “wear and tear”

• Firmware updates that may be available from time to time from Nikon

Commencement and Initial Service Period: This Service Program is effective as of March 30, 2009 on all new D3/D3X cameras purchased from an Authorized Nikon Canada Dealer and is applicable for an initial period of two years from the date of original purchase. Also, D3/D3X cameras purchased new from an Authorized Nikon Canada Dealer prior to March 30, 2009, are automatically covered, starting March 30, 2009, until two years after the date of original purchase or until March 30, 2010, whichever period is greater.

Cost: There is no fee payable to Nikon for Services during the applicable initial service period under this Service Program. You have the option, exercisable by submitting a written application form before the expiry of the applicable initial service period (but not after expiry) to extend the Service Program for an additional year, at a cost of $300.00, plus applicable GST / PST / QST / HST. An application form for an Extended Service Contract is available by contacting the Service Department at a Nikon office listed below.

Shipping: To receive the Services, you must deliver your D3/D3X to one of Nikon’s three service depots listed below together with a photocopy of the original bill of sale. Unless contrary to applicable law, freight and insurance charges to these locations are your sole responsibility and so is risk of loss, damage or theft during shipment to Nikon. The return shipment, to the address you provide, will be by a means determined at Nikon’s sole discretion and will be paid by Nikon. Nikon will only ship the return shipment to an address within Canada. Any replaced parts become the property of Nikon and will not be returned.

Dxomark tested sensors from several medium format cameras: Mamiya ZD Back, Leaf Aptus 75S, Hasselblad H3DII 39, and Phase One P45+. Now medium format can be compared to the D3x (in theory):

I think it is time to remove the Nikon MX tag.

Update: this is how Chase answered my question on the noise level issues: "I didn't experience any unjust noise at 800 with properly exposed images. 1600 even looked nice. I ultimately might be willing to shoot the D3 at higher ISO than the D3x, but that's really transcending what the D3x is meant for... Compared to other cameras at that D3x res, even 800-1600 is a total score" (source). I do believe him.

Chase Jarvis just completed the first national ad campaign shot with the Nikon D3x. His opinion on the D3x: "I am loving it". No problems reported. You can see all of his D3x videos here.

I received a single report of a faulty D3x and it was something not related to the noise levels (I got a screenshot of the service order, so the issue was real but an isolated incident). Given the number of readers we have, I think we can conclude that Thom's problem was an unique quality assurance issue and and should not be a concern at that point.

Nikon D3x noise levels again

I was researching further the D3x noise issue and I came across this test from popphoto. I do not know how the tests were performed, but here is a comparison between the noise levels of Nikon D3, Nikon D3x and Canon EOS 5D Mark II: the Canon seems to be better than the D3x at any noise level. Also, the D3 has better noise level (200 ISO) than the D3x?

Nikon D3x problems?

Thom Hogan (from all people) got a defective Nikon D3x: "the original camera I received was sub-par in more than one way". His main complain were the noise levels. He got a replacement and this trigger him to even re-write his D3x review. It seems that other people experienced D3x problems as well (according to his post). If you have an issue with your D3x, I would like to hear from you. Send some examples as well.

The bottom line is that If you are the fortunate owner of a D3x, it is worth to compare your results with other D3x owners and make sure you did not get a lemon. Remember the price you paid for this monster? If there is interest, I can create a group on flickr where you can send your D3x photos for comparison/evaluation.

If you thought the D3x price was high, it can always get higher:

"Nikon has jacked the price of its new high-end DSLR to £6000 ($8800) in the UK due to the slinky-like fluctuations of currency exchange rates. The original UK list price, announced back in December, was a mere £5500 ($8050). That's almost a 10% rise in one month."

Nikon D3x price started to drop

The first price drop comes from Japan - 762,800 Yen down from 799.000 Yen (source).

Cameta Camera is selling Nikon D3x on eBay for $7479.95 - (buy now price, US warranty, free shipping).

RobertsImaging was selling the D3x for $7495, but now they are out of stock:

There is also a price drop in Switzerland. While most resellers ask CHF 11.998 for the D3X, there is one selling it for CHF 9580.00 (or 9388.40 if you pay in advance).

I believe we will see a D3x price tag below $7,000 by March of 2009.

Update (12.21.08): the price is now up to USD 7,300 with 36 bids. I did not expect it to go that high. Another day of bidding left.

Cameta Camera is currently selling a D3x on eBay. The starting bid was 99 cents. The current price is USD 5,000.

I guess they are testing the water to see how much are buyers wiling to pay. If it is true that the dealer's cost for D3x is USD 6,500 we should see a USD 7,000 price in two months.

The news of the day: Nikon D3x is out. So far, no black dots or other nasty surprises. I could not find any interesting reviews or test shots yet (besides another Alpha 900 and DX3 raw file noise comparison). There was a small D3x registration problem on Nikon's website and that's about it.

A reader pointed out something interesting: the included scan is from a D3 product brochure, printed in December 2007. On Page 26 there are the different design samples shown - the image is also available online:

The crop shows obviously the D3 but the label clearly has an 'x' after the D3. As you can see this is not the D2x (click on image for better view). Nikon gave us a clear sign of the upcoming D3x last year, but we could not figure it out, lol. Thanks Guido!

Nikon D3X worldwide release this Friday
