  • Happy New Year! Thanks for all the great rumors and discussions.

  • NikonFanboy

Peter , I wish you and your family a Happy and Prosperous New Year-2016. God bless-with regards ram

    • thank you all!

      • NikonFanboy

Peter, next week announcement will begin with compact cameras. That will be all. The big announcement on D5 WILL BE IN FEB/MARCH? i am just speculating on the nikon’s past release patterns…i hope they prove me wrong…;0

        • That is a possibility – many companies will announce their products right after CES. The D5 could be on display at CES and the official announcement could be in the second week of Ferbruary.

          • NikonFanboy

other thing i wanted to ask you was about the sony’s new 54mp sensor. Thom has mentioned about it. Do you think nikon will have that in their future pipeline? just wanted to know that is all…

  • Eno

I wish you all a happy new year!

  • Happy New Year and thanks for all the rumours!

  • Peter

A happy new year to all of you!

Two of the three most commented posts are related to the D5. And no post reached 400 answers this year. I remember the rumors on the Df had 900+ comments.

@admin: Do you make the same observation overall at your website? Is public interest on Nikon products slowly fading away? Or was this year simply a transition year with less and less interesting products than previous years?

    • JJ168

I think since using discuss, we have less comment. Previously we had a lot of unanimous trollers that most topic easily reached over 500 comments.

      • RMJ

During the release of Df, Discuss was already in use. So it can’t be the reason.

I think the marketing for Df was excellent. It really made people to get interested what was coming.

        • Sawyerspadre

Lots of comments because it was new and different, and Nikon had a teaser ad campaign…

          • RMJ

Yup. I edited my earlier comment to say the same while you were writing.

      • I agree

    • Yes, I see a drop in the interest of Nikon products in general. My traffic is also down this year compared to the year before – for the first time since I run this blog (started 8 years ago). I think this is because Nikon just froze for 6 months in 2015 and did not announce anything. This was never the case before.

      • Sawyerspadre

They were diligently working on the D400 and Mirrorless. 😉

      • Uti

Nikon like any other company has to respond to world wide economies and at a time when so many economies are flat or on the verge of recession median incomes are slipping backward. You can’t develop new products when fewer people don’t have the disposable income to buy them.

  • Happy New Year, Nikon fans and critics!

What ever happened to the full-frame mirrorless camera?

    • Sawyerspadre

I would bet this is more a political challenge inside Nikon, than a technical hurdle. Nikon has the technical smarts, but do they have the will, in management, to go to the next level, even if it cannabalizes DSLR sales?

Also some smart people who normally work on DSLR would need to be re-assigned…

    • I believe it will come in 2016 (maybe 2017) but I have no other details.

  • stormwatch

Happy new 2016! Lot’s of good jobs and new Nikon models!

    Happy New Year

Here’s a fun way to drive discussion. Rank your wish list in order of importance to you.

    1 Full Frame Mirrorless
2 D400 High FPS, Pro Controls, DX Flagship
3 D8xx High Megapixel Monster Upgrade
4 DX Mirrorless, light and sweet
5 Full Complement of DX Primes, especially wides
6 D6xx Entry Level FX Upgrade
    7 Radio Controlled Speedlight System
8 True D700 replacement, Pro, 24Mpx, 10 FPS, Focus upgrade

BTW, this is not my order, just a way to number them. It also presumes the D5 is a given.

    • Sawyerspadre

Or would You all be happy with the D5, a new Nikon 1 model and lots of Coolpix 😉

    • Rob

  • Happy New Year. I’m a daily reader of your site… thanks for all the work that goes into making NR the go-to source for new and rumoured Nikon products. Greeting from Switzerland.

  • azur

Happy New Year to all participants, and thank you to Peter Admin for all your efforts with excavating news and rumors about Nikon equipment !
My greatest wish for Nikon Rumors in 2016 would be some new NR blog software to replace the Disqus software.
It’s almost impossible to follow the Disqus comments because they are mixed in between each other, instead of being chronological.
If the next day you want to read new posts you have to read the entire thread again to find the new posts because they are mixed in between the old ones, in a nested structure, even when you Sort by Newest.
Most of the time I just give up following longer comment threads because of that.
Am I the only one finding it a pain to read the nested Disqus software comment structure ?

    • I have not found a better solution than disqus so far. You can change the sorting on the comments from the menu on the top. It works pretty good actually.

      • Allan

Maybe I’m doing something incorrectly, but I have the same problem/complaint as Azur. Otherwise, your site is excellent.

  • Hanudiyan

no one else annoyed by font in point #6 to #10 in “Top 10 posts for December 2015” list?

  • Happy New year to all. I read this article in The Atlantic yesterday and couldn’t help thinking about the parallels with what we’ve seen from Nikon over the last year or two.

    • Allan

      Unfortunately, human nature never changes.

    • Sawyerspadre

Interesting read. I think Nikon actually wants to develop the right stuff, and I don’t think they are being deceitful or unethical.

Nikon is however stuck in a business model where they seem to be frozen, somewhat, like a deer in the headlights.

Market reality, the most popular camera in the world is an iPhone 6 (or now 6s). Cameras need to communicate and connect and share, easily, and somewhat seamlessly.

There are many levels of customers who would love to have better pictures than their phone can capture. Focal length, low light, and sensor size are handicaps for the phone guys, for now.

Nikon and Canon, among others, need to re-imagine, and listen to the wishes and needs of picture taking. They should also listen to their base, which would seem to tell them they need some gaps filled. For a much as we hear about the D400 gap, the DX prime lens gap is probably more harmful.

My boss used to say that humans gave two ears and one mouth, to be used in that proportion. Listen, listen, listen some more. Your customers will tell you what they want.

      • Yeah, I don’t think the author’s examples of unethical behavior fit Nikon at all. But the other stuff about corporate culture and how it shapes decision making is right on. The other factor at Nikon that the article doesn’t address is the effect of Japanese culture that gets thrown into the mix.

      • JJ168

Whoever release a FF compact interchangeable lenses with pancake primes 28-105mm f2-3.5, reasonable AF and simple connectivity with smartphone will get my money. I love smartphone, however, at the moment i am still willing to carry my d810 with 70200 or 85 1.4 for the IQ it brings.
