What to expect next from Nikon

Nikon Rumors
This is an updated post on what to expect from Nikon in the future – the next official announcement will be this week (most likely tonight EST) and will include three new, previously rumored lenses:

AF-S NIKKOR 200-500mm f:5.6E ED VRAF-S NIKKOR 24-70mm f:2.8E ED VRNikon AF-S NIKKOR 24mm f:1.8G ED lens

Rumored Nikon products that will be announced later in 2015 or in early 2016:

Nikon-D5-DSLR-camera-logo
→ Nikon D5: the D5 is rumored to have 15 fps continuous shooting rate. The official announcement will most likely be at the next CES show in January 2016.

Nikon-Coolpix-logo
→ Nikon Coolpix camera with a large sensor:

  • Nikon is working on new Coolpix cameras with a large sensor. Most likely there will be two different models.
  • On several occasions in the past Nikon’s reps mentioned that they are still committed to their mirrorless and Coolpix product lines and they still see potential future in 4K video and advanced compact cameras.
  • I am still not sure of the size of the sensor – I am receiving rumors for everything between 1″ to APS-C and full frame. Most likely there will be one model with 1″ sensor and another with a DX sensor (replacement for the Coolpix A, which is already listed as discontinued). In a recent interview, Nikon’s executive confirmed that a new compact camera with 1″ sensor is coming in the future:

Q: Any new Coolpix A? Any plans to respond to Canon and Sony’s 1-inch sensor fixed-lens compact cameras?
A: Sony’s 1-inch CSC is definitely very successful. We will have a competing product in the future.

Nikon 1 macro lens
→ New Nikon 1 lenses – all but one of the 1 Nikkor prototype lenses shown back in 2011 were already announced (the picture shows a prototype of the not-yet-announced 1 Nikkor macro lens).

Nikon-1-camera-patent-design
→ I expect also a new Nikon 1 V4 mirrorless camera to be announced by the end of 2015 or in early 2016.

Nikon 28-80mm f:3.5-5.6 VR lens patent
→ Full frame Nikon mirrorless camera – there is already a patent for a 28-80mm f/3.5-5.6 VR full frame mirrorless lens.

→ New “secret” product – most likely will connect to a smartphone

Nikon-fluorite-lens
→ New Nikkor telephoto lenses with fluorite (FL) element – several of those lenses were already refreshed. This is more of a long term goal and it will take few years until they replace all mentioned lenses.

nikond400box

→ I have to mention the Nikon D400 again – in the past week several websites reported that the D400 will be announced in September. All this was based on a single UK forum post to which I give zero credibility (hopefully I am wrong). This is nothing new really, similar D400 rumors have been around since 2008. I still believe Nikon will announce a new high end DX model with 4k video and new AF system, but I have no reliable information as of today and I think this will happen in 2016 (if it happens at all).
