After few appearance at the Sochi Winter Olympics (see herehere and here) and multiple listings at various websites, the new Nikon D4s DSLR camera (see rumored specifications) will be announced on February 25th (in some countries the press event is scheduled for February 27th). The D4s will porbably be on display at WPPI and at The Photography Show in the UK:

I hope you’re right Peter! I get teased less coming out of cold water. ;-)

    • http://nikonrumors.com/ Nikon Rumors

I still believe the camera was supposed to be announced in Japan last week.

      • Mike

Probably. We may never know the true reason behind B&H and Adorama pulling the listing, but that and the non-announcement probably go hand in hand.

        • MyrddinWilt

It likely has to do with the Japanese foreign ministry being unhappy with what is going on in Sochi and Ukraine.

Putin has made himself very much a brand to avoid. Nobody wants to give him any more of a PR boost than is inevitable.

          • Theodoros Fotometria

Or it can simply be that there is some D4 stock that has to go….

      • John

Anything to do with XQD 2.0 announcement?

        • http://nikonrumors.com/ Nikon Rumors

          I doubt that.

          • dg

            at 5999 pounds…or 10k….maybe 24 or 36mp?

            • George

              Here’s a reason why it shouldn’t be 24 MP:

              http://jeffcable.blogspot.com/2014/02/crazy-fast-deadlines-and-workflow.html

If speed is your primary priority (which is what this camera is designed for), you don’t want those 24/36 MP files slowing down Lightroom. (24 MP files are noticeably slower to process even on a state of the art i7 laptop.)

            • George

You obviously didn’t read the article I linked to.

            • DuncanM

No, I did. That might be why you don’t want 24mp raws, my PC and workflow have no such limitation.

            • bartjan

And how would one fit a PC in a backpack?

If you’re photographing at the Olympics and need to have the pictures processed and online within 15 minutes, you really don’t want any unneeded delays. AP and Getty do shoot JPEG instead of RAW, because it processes faster. http://gizmodo.com/the-inside-story-of-how-olympic-photographers-capture-s-1521746623

            • Pippo

Olympic shooters have LAN cables & Wi-Fi in. Pictures processed designer

            • Marc W.

In Russia, pictures process the designers?

            • jamesbjenkins

              Lies.

I have an SSD an i7 processor and 32GB of RAM in my iMac. My workflow still bogs down on a batch of D800 files. 1:1 previews take a second or two to full res, etc.

            • DuncanM

Have you allocated LR to use more ram for the cache? Previews will build and load faster if you do. I have 32gb allocated for LR to use. I use an unlocked i5 clocked at 4.3ghz and she doesn’t skip a beat when I used a friends D800 for the day.

            • Marc W.

“1:1 previews take a second or two to full res, etc.”

OMG, I’m so sorry. I hope you can get this resolved, it sounds like such a burden. Do you do on demand sport photography?

            • No-one special

I use a 2006-era Mac Pro to work on my D800e files and it inhales them. The problem is that most people have with Lightroom slowdowns stem from moving the cache around, having huge catalogues with history states, and building 1:1 previews all of the time.

              Try reading the manual, people.

            • Georgia

As A D800E owner I call this bullshit.
It doesn’t slow you down in LR – meaby you just need a new computer.

            • lan ban

              ;)

            • DuncanM

I just threw up in my mouth a little.

          • Rudi

Wasn’t it the same when the D4 was announced? XQD was announced shortly before if I remember correctly.

            • http://nikonrumors.com/ Nikon Rumors

In this case they just announced the technical specification. I think it will take a while until the companies start actually producing it.

        • Steven Solidarios

Maybe the faster SD card U3 profiles?

      • Jay Pike

It was supposed to be announced on the 11th last week, but when two top Nikon execs were heading to Sochi, one of them found this site and was so pissed off at how accurate the dates and information were, they pulled the release date. Nikon execs don’t like having their secrets let out and this site has been way too accurate for their comfort…. lets hope they stick to next week….

        • Sleeper

Yeah. Having a random site getting some dates right is more important than updating their ancient AF system.

          Typical Jap fktards.

          • jamesbjenkins

Troll much? The D4 AF system is the best in any DSLR. Faster and more accurate in low-light than 1Dx, more accurate contrast detection, etc.

And, you’re a racist fck. Go jump off a bridge.

            • Jay Pike

I’m hoping this wasn’t related to my comments (at least I’m guessing its not based on the content).

D4 has a great focus tracking system, but, I must admit, the 9 point 3D tracking will be interesting on the new D4s. Personally, I’ve gotten used to only using single point AF and always relying on the center AF point (its the most sensitive) and then manually adjusting focus from there based on the event (sports) that I’m shooting since I can guess the movements of the athletes better than the AF system can (maybe some day it will get up there… we’ve got face AF, I’d love to have athlete AF).

              jp

            • Sleeper

Rofl. Morons like you are why Nikon don’t need to update their AF. When they fuck you over, you bend and ask for more.

Go learn what a cross/line type AF sensor is, then you might know why D4 can’t focus a fucking twig for shit on side AF points after 5 years.

Best AF system my arse. Ignorance is such bliss. So desparate to lick Nikon’s dick clean after they take a piss?

      • done!

Admin – reported this in such nice detail… am vicariously over D4s… and waiting to see what D5 brings. Not that i will buy a $6K camera…. have D800 and will migrate to next $3K camera d900. So, there.

  • don’tworrytoquote

please quote drphotorumor and canonwatch… it would simply be fair, don’t be afraid
    http://www.canonwatch.com/canon-may-announce-new-full-frame-high-end-dslr-march-counter-nikons-d4s-announcement-feb-25th/

    • Cloke

Nikon better have something good up its sleeve. Otherwise 1D X Mk II will be the winner once again. As of right now the only upside D4 has over 1D X is backlit buttons and DR.

      • DuncanM

But that would imply the 1DX beats out the current D4, which of course we all know is just silly.

        • Ahmad Al-Joboori

How is that just silly? could you explain more please.

          • Serious Gearhead

Google the D4 vs 1DX reviews. The D4 beats the 1DX on most of them.

        • Steven Solidarios

          Sensor no. Auto focus……ehhhhhhhhhhhh damn.

          • D4 owner

Autofocus is actually better and wider spread in the 1D X – so for daily use as a reporter I would say the Canon wins.

            • Steven Solidarios

Im really hoping Nikon improved the D4s in this department. If they can’t beat the 1DX, hopefully it can come closer than the vanilla D4. Perhaps the D5 will be a 20fps heat seeking mirrorless monster if not.

            • clifflwms

Better? It’s all subjective, but the D4 focuses better in low light, which is more important to me.

            • DuncanM

I agree, it is subjective. They are both, in fact, very VERY similar in performance from what I’ve read (I’ve not used a 1DX personally so I can’t compare). The low light performance of the D4 would make it the choice for me, and owning one for $700 less than a 1DX would only cinch the deal. Any time you feel like Nikon is putting the screws to you on prices just look over the fence in the Canon camp and instantly feel better about your life :)

            • Rudi

Look at DxO and you’ll see where 1DX is…

            • clifflwms

I’m a D4 owner, but I’ve used the 1Dx for an extended period (Traded with a friend for 2 weeks… long enough to get a feel for it), you can forget what DxO says, there’s about a dimes difference between them, except for the D4′s better low light focusing, and the 1Dx’s superior speed.

            • kparseg

I feel sorry for you, if you judge how good the DLSR is based on DxO scores. Especially, the top of the line cameras.

            • Rudi

Thanks you kparseg, but there is no need to feel sorry. If you didn’t get the message I ….. (fill in the words ;-) I’m lucky with my D4 and don’t want that Nikon Canon discussion.

            • jamesbjenkins

“Better” is such an irrelevant and subjective word.

      • Giampi

What about the nikon 35 1.8 FF? is tomorrow the launch? no samples for now?

  • Mike

I just did the math on exchange rate between UK and Canada, I calculated it will cost me $10,970 (Canadian). That’s unreal. WOW!!!

    • Mike

No, remember the UK price is shown with tax already added on. Canadian prices will show the product price without tax. So, in Ontario with 13% HST, you’re looking at $6780.

    • desmo

It doesn’t work to do a direct money conversion for cameras priced in lbs.
British prices include VAT and the pound is placed arbitrarily high on the exchange rate .
thus prices for camera gear in England is much higher than US

      • umeshrw

Isn’t lbs pound a measure of weight? Can it also be used for that of currency pound?

        • Padaung

No. GBP/£ is only spelt ‘pounds’. lbs is a unit of weight measurement in the UK too.

Yes, out prices are normally significantly higher for hardware and software compared to the north american prices. A outcry occurs every time a new camera is launched about this. VAT tax is displayed on the UK list price automatically in probably 99% of shops (the remaining 1% are shops which only sell direct to other businesses) which does confuse matters a little when doing a direct $/£ price comparison.

          • jamesbjenkins

£ is called “pound” because it was originally based on a literal pound of sterling silver. You may want to get your history right before you start lecturing, professor.

        • desmo

          It’s a lb of silver,
don’t have the stupid symbol on my keyboard,
          don’t really need it either

  • Scott M.

Looking more and more like 24mp. I will get one if so.

  • brook

    I’m in at 24mp as well, same 16mp chip, not interested(already have a d4)

    • Griffin Mulvey-Hudson

      give me u d4 lol

      • brook

        Really funny reply, gret job

      • Yas Hamid

I got 2 D4′s .. thinking of selling one.. but i’m not 100% sure yet.. might just add the D4s to the collection :) prefer sitting at 16 MP .. at 24 MP i don’t think it’ll be that good in low light.. it’s just physics :) Brook why don’t you go for D800 or D610 if you MP hungry.. :)

        • Brook

I’m an ad shooter and need the mp. I shoot people and sometimes need the 5-6 fps(or 10) and 24 mp to me is the sweetspot.
I have 4 d800s and tried the d610 but the af sucks bad. I like the d800 but want a 22+mp in a prosody.(I also have a d3x but need higher asa)

        • Griffin Mulvey-Hudson

          megapixel ho :)

  • Spyderman

    Finally…

  • D800E_shooter

As someone here said, at 5995 pounds it looks more and more like a merge between the D4 line and the D3X line… 24mp@ISO12800 as clean as the D4 at 16mp.

    • dg

      right…bc at aroun 10k…it would have to be something more than just another 16mp D4 refresh….id guess 24 at 11 fps…or 36

  • doge

$10,000 for a camera? Don’t they know that pros use iphones now.

    • guest

It’s for the wanna-be-pros who think equipment makes the difference. Probably out-number the pros 1000:1. Nice market segment…

    • lan ban

      pros use nokia 3310

  • D700guy

I was poised to get this camera being a $6000 body, but there’s no fucking way I’m paying 10K. I’ll keep my D4

    • http://nikonrumors.com/ Nikon Rumors

I don’t think this is the real price. The US price will be the same as the D4.

  • Scaremonger!

Don’t get too excited about the £5995 MBP price!
The listing says “Competitive Price TBC”
    http://www.mpbphotographic.co.uk/new-equipment/digital-slr-cameras/nikon-digital-slr-cameras/nikon-d4s-digital-slr-body–1

    • broxibear

The D4 was £5249 in the UK when it was launched, that price is a better gauge…I’d be very surprised if it was cheaper than that.

      • Jay Pike

Keep in mind that Nikon plays the currency rates for/against their product lines relative to the destination markets.

I wouldn’t read too much into the UK price because of that at this point.

        jp

  • D700guy

Nikon screwed themselves when they priced the D3x at $8000. No one would touch it. This wont be any different. $10,000 is just too damn much, especially for a camera that does not shoot 4K RAW video.

    • Marc W.

I wonder if they are postponing the announcement because they are making changes to the spec since people are voicing their opinions.

  • AM

A few weeks ago, it was rumored that a new fisheye would be announced.
I believe that the admin misheard the rumor as it’s actually the fishtank that comes with the D4s.

  • Source
  • Mansgame

I don’t care if it costs $10,000, I will make sure and get the 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5 with it.

    • AM

Make sure to order before March 1 to get the rebate.

    • D700guy

      lol

    • http://loewald.com/ Tonio Loewald

Hey the French ad does mention crazy (“fou”) prices.

      • Marc W.

Like a used car lot ad? “CRAZY CRAZY CRAZY PRICES!!!!”

  • saywhatuwill

Ah, this is perfect for those people who can’t bear to wait for The Moment to press the shutter button. Just spray and pray and you’ll have an entire sequence to choose from. Henri Cartier-Bresson would be turning in his grave.

    • AM

Because there wasn’t a D4s during his time.

      • mikeswitz

The point is he didn’t need a D4. He was a genius at capturing the “decisive moment”. In fact he turns in his grave just at the decisive moment.

        • AM

How do you know he didn’t spray and pray even at 0.2 fps or whatever fastest speed was at that time? Not always but sometimes he may have done just that.

          • mikeswitz

            wow! You’re kidding, right?

    • Ric

      so would Rembrandt

    • Scott M.

I think HCB would enjoy 14 moments to choose from.

      • saywhatuwill

        LOL, good one.

      • mikeswitz

I don’t. the single moment was his art. 14 moments is just technology. Nor would he have enjoyed the size of a D4.

  • Ray Justice

Peter, are you still adamant the D4s will have 16 mp instead of 24 and does the rumor about canon releasing a high mp camera in March change your mind on 16mp?

    • http://nikonrumors.com/ Nikon Rumors

I do not know about Canon and I still stay behind 16MP for the D4s.

      • Maji

Peter, you have thrown down the gauntlet and challenged the assertions of who that shall remain unnamed here :) I think D4s will be 16MPx but hope that it will be 24MPx!!!

        • http://nikonrumors.com/ Nikon Rumors

When was the last time Nikon did what you wanted or what you expected?

          • AM

When they released the D610. I asked for 0.5 more fps, continuous quiet mode, and improved auto WB.

          • Maji

Only when I prayed that the D800 be less than $3000 LOL… you are right about Nikon!!

          • Marc W.

I wished for a small FF camera when the D3 came out. They delivered. I haven’t bought a new digital since.

      • Jay Pike

Although I so very much enjoy the conspiracy theory posts and punches that suggest the D4s might be 24mp, 16mp will be the end result. Firstly, as someone else correctly pointed out, ‘s’ have never changed resolutions in the past, only processing, screen, etc. ‘x’ models have had resolution changes in the past

Secondly, all of the EXIF data coming from images posted from Sochi are reflecting 16mp sizes. There have been no EXIF data with anything larger than 16mp.

Conspiracy or not, its hard to hide the truth from the EXIF data and sports shooters don’t have enough time to modify their EXIF data like that prior to production image release…

And it would be too costly and too difficult to be producing two separate strings of the D4s: one with 16mp sensor and one with 24mp sensor just for testing at this last stage.

Given how long it takes to manufacture these bodies, Nikon wouldn’t be risking playing around with development and beta units at this late stage (maybe a year ago, but definitely not now). More than likely, they already have a pretty good stock pile going on these.

The only remaining variable that Nikon would have that would be causing a holdup at this point would be firmware.

And a firmware holdup means that they are doing something new, most likely Expeed 4 and noise reduction.

        jp

  • Guest

I don’t see how it can be 24 mp…they wouldn’t call it D4s, they’re never was a change in the resolution between the model and their ”s” upgrades… 24 mp or 36 would have been a D4x…

    • http://nikonrumors.com/ Nikon Rumors

      exactly

      • dg

        maybe..but then what? 4k video?

      • Ceasar Sharper

Well I’d upgrade from my D800 to a D4S if it was 24mp. Otherwise I will hold out for a D400 to replace my D300. What about a DX sensor in the D800 body? People would pay $2,200 for that along with an Exceed 4 processor.

        • AM

$2,200 for a DX? Who in their right mind would do that?

          • Ceasar Sharper

I would for a D400 in a D800 body with 24 mp, at 8fps, Exceed 4 processor and noise handling like the D800. I would be a great pro-sumer birding and sports body.

            • Joven

Don’t forget the 4K video, raw video capture, 61-pt AF, Wi-fi, GPS, and sub $1,000 price tag!

              SMH

            • Marc W.

              With a 18-4000mm 1.8 lens?

            • Joven

1.8? *eye roll* If it’s not 1.2, then it doesn’t go into my kit.

            • Marc W.

              You’re right. I’m Sorry.

Oh yeah, and under 6 pounds.

            • Joven

Which is an absolute must for single-handed operation.

            • rt-photography

High iso like ff? No, wont happen. Dx cant push past 2000 eith heavy smear and chroma noise. U want a d800 with a d7100 price tag

            • Marc W.

You could have said the same thing about the DX sensors before the D300 came out.

            • Radek

Hey, just make D800′s sensors (same photo site size) onto a DX-sized die and voilà … 16MP DX camera with D800 noise performance. Perhaps one push slightly higher resolution (smaller pixel size) now since D800 sensor is couple years old …

16-20MP DX body with FF sensor performance is not far fetched at all.

              Me want one :-)

              R>

    • Scott M.

Who would upgrade if it stays 16mp? There is no “new” video like
D3, so what is the upgrade beside Exspeed 4? Not enough, IMO.

      • AM

Until seeing the final specs, at this moment, I can hardly see any existing D4 user upgrading to the D4s.
Perhaps all those news agencies that every other year renew their equipment, but other than that, I don’t know who else would upgrade.

  • Pat Bélisle

    I don’t see how it can be 24 mp…they wouldn’t call it D4s, there
never was a change in the resolution between the model and their ”s”
    upgrades… 24 mp or 36 would have been a D4x…

    • Marcel Speta

that’s correct, but who knows how it is today… look at their marketing …. nobody can get oriented in this mess :-)
24Mpx with same performance would be awesome and i will be really considering upgrade D3s to this model ….

    • TB

      D4x would rather be 54 than 24 / 36 mp in 2014…

  • Ernesto Quintero

I wee bit expensive for me. Unless. I can sell a kidney.
    . …… .
For Sale one slightly used kidney. $20,000 or will trade for Nikon D4s and lens to be named later.

  • outkasted

    take my money?

    • Aldo

24mp take my money… 16mp keep your money

  • Steven Solidarios

    My body is ready!

  • ohnocanon

Since Peter thinks it will be 16mp…It will be 24mp. lol

  • Danny

I personally think it will be 24mp. Nikon stated that the camera will have improved image quality and focusing. I don’t see how much an image can improve with the same 16mp sensor nor better focusing alone will make an image that much better and also just can’t believe that Adorama would make an error like that on their website.

    • meartur

Size doesn’t necessarily mean quality :p

      • Danny

very true….since its mainly about the lens….

      • Me

Dynamic range could be improved, ISO performance could be improved, the noise floor could be lowered, all of which are image improvements that are not about size and more likely given that this is basically a sports shooter camera.

      • Ric

        That’s what she said

    • nwcs

The sensor is only one small part of the imaging chain. If they updated the ASICs (and they would have since new ones have since come out) then image quality will be slightly better.

      • Danny

If it’s not 24mp it would be a disappointment. I’m just trying to put two and two together with what Nikon states and this Adorama thing. How they could make a mistake like that on their website. When the specs are in LARGE FONTS! lol…or was, now that it has since been removed….

    • D700guy

They improved the 12mp D3 when they made the D3s

  • Ahmad Al-Joboori

Great, now D4 owners can dump their 2-year old camera and buy the new one.

    • Me

You must be new here. Nikon tweaks their top of the like PJ camera every two years.

  • Lay it down Clown

I’ll bet dollars to doughnuts that none of you broke-dicks own a D4 and damn sure none of you twats crying about needing 24MP can afford to buy one anyway. Everyone knows that the only people that hang around these forum are trolls and delusional “pros”.

Now quit crying about a camera you will never be able to buy.

  • NIKONMAN

TO late for anything DEAR NIKON.
After 8 years of experience with NIKON I swap full system to canon…
I wait and wait for any firmware from nikon for D800 or D3s… and nothing…
    1) GREEN YELLOW TINT ON PHOTOGRAPHS
    2) NOT REAL SKIN TONE
    3) NO RULE OF THIRDS GRID in LIVEMODE ( in d3s … )
    4) WORSE VIDEO
    5) EVERY RAW NEEDS EXTRA TIME FOR POST PROCESSING
    6) OVERBURNED SKIN ON PEOPLE
    7) PROBLEM WITH WHITEBALANCE – COLOR WHITE BALANCE MODES WORKS BETTER IN ADOBE CAMERA RAW ON CANON
    8) MAIN REASON TO SWAP SYSTEM – COLOURS !!!
    9) PHOTOGRAPHS FROM CANON LOOKS MORE 3D compare the same photographs from NIKON straid from the camera.

AFTER 8 YEARS I HAVE TO SALE NOW OVER 8 LENSES.
    GPS
    FLASH and more more more

    BYE BYE NIKON

    • rt-photography

Bye ye nikonman. Dont let the door hit u on the way out ;)

      • NIKONMAN

Don’t worries…Few days ago some canon guy told me this ” NIKO PRODUCE GOOD CAMERAS , CANON PRODUCE GOOD PHOTOGRAPHS”

        • umeshrw

And I thought that good photographers produce good photographs with good cameras.
P.S. Good photographers also produce good photographs with canons.

          • NIKONMAN

            You have right…
But if you have 1000 raw files from wedding.
Is no better just click autowhite balance of daylight in LR and get correct colours on this way… ? Time scale for post processing in nikon and canon is different.
            example 2
You have photographs of people the same :
two clicks in raw from canon and photographs are ready….
No play with white balance at all in canon…

            • nicks

Working in the weddings for the last 5 years with every Nikon has been produced, and after being a Canon user in the early digital era, I can definitely say that comparing images and albums with friends competitors Canon users, saws clearly Nikon advantage. In general image quality, focus accuracy, mainly sharpness, but yes even color vibrancy. Dear friend Nikonman just keep your Nikon archive, collect your Canon work and some day make a comparison.

            • lan ban

nikon much much superior to canon in image quality cut your …….. sir

            • Marc W.

Then, please go to the Canon forums and chat there. Oh yeah, make sure you change your name from NikonMan to CanonMan.

              Because…. we don’t care.

            • outkasted

..and we are taking our marbles and going home..lol

            • outkasted

you nah custom your WB for LR. I did and happy as a clam with my D700

          • Andrew

Nikonman sounds foreign and most likely Japanese (example: “no play with white balance”). I bet he is a Canon employee trying to help his company.

            • Patrick O’Connor

My wife is Japanese. She doesn’t sound like that and neither do her family or our Japanese friends. Personally, I think he sounds Eastern European or Russian.

            • Andrew Kandel

Funny, he sounds like he is from Underabridgelandia to me.

            • NIKON

            • NIKONMAN

not russian we talk about cameras not about me ;)

            • NIKONMAN

no no no :) I have D3x in studio and I work in studio on nikon from last 3 years.. I change system for self outside of my full time job… IN my full time job I use nikon D3x at the moment…

        • Marc W.

No, Kodak produces the best photos.

I have a two Canons. When they sit there, they don’t take any photos. Maybe I need to get them serviced.

          • NIKONMAN

try nikon and canon at the same time and please come back to discusion

            • Marc W.

Do they make a left handed Canon? If not, I can’t use them at the same time.

I don’t shoot a lot of digital, so trying this won’t matter to me.

Plus, I shoot Nikon RAW, so I can control every aspect of the file. I’m sure you can do that for Canon files too, so it doesn’t really matter how the camera tints the photo.

        • D800Mang

I completely agree. I shoot with both Nikon and Canon and have been for years. I have no bias to either company but I can clearly and confidently agree with the fact that Canon wins on colors, hand down. Whoever disagrees has not compared enough images or is completely color blind. Sure with enough tweaking Nikon can get close but out of the box there is no comparison.

    • ohnocanon

Canon still makes cameras like it was 2008. Thanks Canon for producing new cameras with 2008 sensors. You do real good work.

      • NIKONMAN

You must be new or maybe sponsored by nikon :)

Color criticism from someone who can’t even spell color.

      p.s.
      composition,
      rule of thirds or otherwise,
is a componenet skill of the photographer, not a design function of the camera.

      Good Riddance

      • David Portass

Colour is the international English spelling of the word, only US use Color, however he did shoot himself in the foot a bit by using both Color and Colour in his post :)

In any case most photographers will do some sort of white balancing anyway during post processing so not a significant issue. Also fully agree with you about composition, overlay in the view finder is a nice to have but really not needed.

He clearly isn’t using RAW to its full advantage with dynamic range of these cameras.

        • NIKONMAN

I never learn English David.. but I can tell you AMERICANS use GRAY and ENGLISH PEOPLE grey GREY. Thank you for your english lession. We talk hear about camera not about my bad english gramar. I have 3 TB raw files from nikon from last 8 years . And if you think that skin colour or color ;) you can fixed by whitebalance you wrong…

I swap system becasue canon raws are more usefull and save the time… You no must use tricks to get final effect which I always do with raws in nikon… Try it both cameras and please give me your opinion after one week or two… ;)

        • nikonman

Sorry David you was on my side actully :) thank for cover me :) from “DESMO”

      • NIKONMAN

You can use only viewfinder, try don’t use lcd preview for taken photographs .. This make you better photographer?
Grids are handy in some extreme situations….

    • AM

8 years and you never learned how to use a Nikon camera?
Well, looks like Canon won’t help you either.

      • NIKONMAN

        I tried do everything..
camera calibration, colour calibration,PS KISS and more more more.. Don’t judge me judge the camera. You don’t know me… I have a lot good photographs taken with nikon and I was happy with them really problems of nikon I found 6 months ago when I found by accident difference between nikon and canon.. Try barrow for few days canon or buy cheap one and after few days you discover the same difference which I found 6 months ago…

        • AM

I’m judging you because I clearly see that you are at fault at not getting the best out of a Nikon camera.
I’m sure that Canon cameras also produce excellent images. But in this case if you are getting crappy images out of a Nikon, it is your fault. Everything you mentioned about WB, skin tones, etc, is subjective. Some like warmer, others cooler, other B/W, etc. So it’s pointless to discuss on those aspects. If you like the colors produced by Canon, so be it. It doesn’t mean that Canon is better than Nikon. It only means that you like Canon’s colors better than Nikon’s using the defaults. But, guess what? If you really knew how to use a Nikon camera, you would have gotten the same colors since long time ago. That’s my point.

    • Jer

Actually 2) NOT REAL SKIN TONE and 6) OVERBURNED SKIN ON PEOPLE would be the same grievance. So that would give you 8 beefs with Nikon instead of the 9 you listed…which fits your rant rather nicely because now you have 8 miserable years with Nikon equipment and 8 or more miserable Nikon lenses and various other sundries to sell;^)

      • nikonman

        Skintone is important:
        family
        weddings
        portraits
        commercial photoshoots

green yellow tint is no good in ladscape too..
shadows, blue sky , sunset and everything looks bad.

    • eneidvaddeu

I give you the fact skin tones are not as accurate as Canon and Canon jpegs are better than Nikon’s.

      1) Green yellow tint is easily fixable with automatic white balance on camera.
      3) Looking at how many years you have of experience I’m shocked you still need the Rule of thirds lines instead of shooting by sight.
      6) Overburned skin is fixed in post by looking on the orange saturation channel.
      7) Learn to operate your camera. 8 years of lazyness.
8+9) If you rely only on what the camera can do for you (JPEGs), and not on your understanding of photography, that will never make you a good photographer.

In summary, I’ve read the reasons of a lazy person who is not willing to explore the functions of his camera and expects the photo to be cooked magically by the machine instead of relying on one’s knowledge.

      Terrible attitude towards photography…

        1. You can’t sometimes… I tried eveything… camera calibration, colour calibration, PSKISS and more more..
        3. Is handy !! to have it ! LCD is handy too ! Old school photographer can tell you the same about LCD PREVIEW for photographs taken by digital. If you have busy landscape and very bad wheather tool like grids are handy!
        6. Why can’t be right straid from the camera?

        7.over 100 000 photographs lazyness?

I shoot in studio with NIKON D70s , NIKON D200, NIKON D3x from last 8 years. Outside of the studio with nikon d70s and nikon d3s 8 years too…

Not lazynes… I have good photos with nikon..
8-9) We talk about cameras not about photographers. Who tell you that I don’t have good photographs in my portofolio? Few weeks ago one of my photograph was first in 500px , take by D3s. Nikon is good camera but some functions can be anoing about years and years… Nikon should fixed some issues and learn.. specialy with colours!! Why you have to fixed everything in raw why raw can’t be correct from the camera ??
Look on histograms for highlight in canon and nikon. Nikon is on the bottom in highlights is less deatails in highlights.. That why is skin overburn… Files from canon keep histogram full of data in highlights… I can compare because I have from 1 week canon and I can compare to raw files from last 8 years …
Why nikon don’t put more firmware to cameras to fix this problem with colours and skin tones for good ? IF you can do it in raw files by few steps why can’t do it camera this for you ??

        • outkasted

Have you ever used Nikon Capture NX? The reason I say this is that this particular software interpolated the whole Nikon RAW file as it was meant to be read. Remember that Lightroom, Adobe Photoshop are reverse engineered to read/ interpolate the file. I did have the same issues you had. But OMG!!! Once I saw in Nikon NX the COLORS I was floored! The only other program that gets the colors closest to NX is Capture One. Now understand Adobe Lightroom is the most convenient and fast when working on multiple files. But when doing the basics editing CCC’s (Color Contrast,Clarity) the files are BUTTER! And Sharp! Once I understood this and saw the difference I used two monitors side by side of the same file with both programs Nikon NX and Adobe Lightroom next to each other. IT was Night and DAY!!!!
So what I did was create a custom profile when importing Nikon files into LR. Its very close but NX still is better.

          • Scott M.

            Interesting…
Thank you for that info. What about NX vs CS6 Photoshop? Or CScc?

            • outkasted

NX will always give you the best rendition simply cause its taking full use of the Nikon (.nef) file

            • Scott M.

              Thanks again.

no just me I never worries about somebody opinion.. I just try and work it… I wait 1 year for any comeback about colours from nikon… I seen woman photographed on nikon site for nikon d5300 they use there EXPEED4. Colour balance on woman portrait is not right… SHE HAS GREEN TINT on skin !! ;)
        here a go :
        http://chsvimg.nikon.com/lineup/dslr/d5300/img/sample/img_04_l.jpg
Official nikon website publish photograph with wrong colour on skin.. I can fix this skin tone in PS by 5 sec…
Any way is wrong straid from the camera again… with expeed 4 !!

        • Scott M.

Skin looks good to me on my monitor. She is in a yellow room with a green shirt on. There will be some color reflecting on her face and hair. This sample doesn’t support your complaint.

        • Scott M.

There are times when you need to abandon the wheelchair and start walking. The problems you list, such as: no grid, skin tones, white balance, color, and other hyperbole, is all happening because you have not left the wheelchair. I don’t experience the stuff you bring as real problems that demand real solution, because I left the crutches. Develop a solution, rather than rely on a solution. There are no skin issues with Nikon or Canon, the problem is elsewhere. Identify it and fix it. When I had my crutches on, I bought a Fuji S5 to help me with skin tones, once I worked out a solution for myself, I abandoned the Fuji, because that point I found skin tones from Nikon more pleasing to my tastes.

      • nikonman

FUJI , SONY , NIKON – is the same league.
I used nikon from last 8 years and I try do it everything… colour calibration , camera calibration, special profiles for camera raw from PSKISS and more more more… Every photographed situation was different and process was different too…

    • gr8fan

You seem to know a lot bit but not spelling! It is ‘TOO late’ not ‘TO late’. Elementary, dear NIKONMAN!

      • nikonam

Discussion is about CAMERAS not about ENGLISH GRAMMAR – I know my ENGLISH IS BAD ;)

    • Blah

Why is that most of these issues sound like operator error? (Number three is an obvious exception but that’s a preference and not a flaw.) I remember Clooney saying once in an interview that there are paparazzi out there who literally tape over the camera buttons and only use their cameras on “out of the box” automatic settings.

If you’re one of those, Nikon Man, I’s sure you’ll have just as many issues with Canon.

      • NIKON

What whitebalance you use on wedding day ? If you photograph all day from morning to 3AM ?
You never used auto whitebalance ?

    • nicks

Coming again (and pls forgive me for my English) you have only one point in your message. It’s about Canon’s 3d looking like images. (In fact it’s most about Canon lenses and the kind of their contrast). And this has its cost. Sharpening edges to produce 3d, drives somehow to cartoonizing the rest of the surfaces making them plastic.

    • Spyderman

You make me wish my name didn’t end in “man”! I want no relation to you…

      1. Sorry for my bad english , I’m not english person.
I had 6 years russian langauage when I was child and after 5 years of german in school. I never learn Englishj in my life ! ;)
      2. Yesterday I was with my kids in People Park and I take some photos with 5D MKII , was rain day I took all photographs with cheap 50mm 1.8 canon lens on F1.8.
What can I say when I opened files in home ???
Is enought to click just DAYLIGHT and work is done.
RAW files loooks like finished …
From last 8 years never something like this was so easy for me…
I used by 4 yeras D70s and from last 4 years NIKON D3s.
Very good in files from yestarday is , that they keep histogram right from left to right… You can see full histogram on the top in darks and the same on the top in highlights.
Photographs looks cartonized but I love this style and I try the same on my D3s from last few years and I just can’t do it with nikon.
      3. In nikon always from last 3 years I was’t happy with colours… Never click to cloudy , daylight , shade finished colurs right…
I always must trying move colour balance to find best colours…
      4. If somebody think and offended me becasue after 8 years I swap system bad. Please buy or barrow 5dmark II from somebody and Try photograph with this camera for few days…
      5. I know raw files from nikon keep better quality you can do it probobly much more with raw files from nikon… but with raw files from canon you just don’t have to do it anything… All is finished from camera…
“You can buy cartoon toy model car ready to use ( no needed glue and work )” canon
” you can buy model of cartoon toy car in parts ready to stick by glue ” NIKON
      I prefer 1st option
Camera is just the tool you everybody should remeber about that.. No really matter nikon or canon.. just the tool. What I can say if my tool was colour blind from last 8 years ??
I spent already fortune for all nikon gear and after 8 years I found that different brand is not colour blind.
I wish you good luck to everybody and I hope EXPEED 4 or maybe Expeed 5 fix the big issue with colours in NIKON.
      6. If somebody wants proot please look at Nphoto magazine.. You have there a lot of examples of photographs take by nikond cameras. W/O problems everybody can find GREEN TINT on photographs from nikon ( specialy on landscape photographs).
You can compare landscape photographs with canon from different magazine… and is no yellow-greent tint there !!

      Good luck Guys… !!
ps. I agree Nikon has better build qulity … canon is more plastic to me… but final result….

    • Twocents

I am in the same situation, only 4 months on, and I can tell all of you that changing my system to from Nikon to Canon was one of the best things I’ve ever done for my photography. And before you all jump on me, I’m a professional photographer with many years experience of all major systems and I can tell you that while you can of course get nice colours etc from Nikon sensors, that I now spend much less time in front of my computer screen with Canon RAW’s than I ever did with Nikon.

No more colour profiling, no more endless tweaking of sliders to get the desired output. Essentially this is a NIkon board and as such any opinion which is negative towards Nikon will be inflammatory, but I would echo Nikonmans point about trying a Canon for a couple of days, and I would say that a large majority of you will end up liking the images more, especially with how little processing it takes to get them to a finished standard.

Also, given that this is an international site, I think picking on someone for their grammar is pretty low, especially seeing as it’s clear that English is not their first language.

      • Twocents

Also I should point out that Nikon have left no clear upgrade path for D700 users (a major reason in my switch). Neither the D800 or the D600/610 are an appropriate replacement, whereas the 5Dmkiii hits a sweet spot when it comes to resolution/features!

        • Cuculain

Good point! Selling my D300 to get the 7D Mark II. Keep my D700 until Nikon produces something compareble. :-) … Just couldn´t resist.

  • Sundra Tanakoh

    What if :) Nikon D4 – 16 mp, D4s – 24 mp, D4x – 36 mp!

    • TheInconvenientRuth

      Surely you mean D4s 16mp, D400 24mp, D4x 48mp.
Or a D4n… Identical to the D4s, but smells of Nutella.

      • Michiel953

Nutella smell would be very inconvenient. Prohibitively so where I live. Let’s stick to “Sanitized Pro Nikon” smell (SPN); the household can live with that.

    • Michiel953

      You missed the D800s.

      24MP.

  • U

    I can only dream :)

  • broxibear

Oops, looks as if Leon Neal got a call from Nikon telling him to take down his instagram image of a D4s in Sochi that I posted yesterday ? © Leon Neal

Keep up your investigative reporting, without you and this site, we wouldn’t know much…

until the day after……. not a dig at peter, but nikon is rather secretive compared to the days of old.

          • broxibear

Yeah they are, but I brought you the first D4s picture of it in use, the first video of it being used, the first prices, the first images with exif data…and Peter confirmed the Launch date.
            Give me a break ?
No…I can’t deliver one to your door, lol.

            • desmo

              No, he can’t make it.
That’s why he trawls the net for camera porn.

I’m sure someone out there has the images of the open card slot and full spec…they’ll probably turn up any day now…I don’t have them.

  • bgbs

Maybe Nikon delayed the announcement because they are busy switching the sensor from 16mpx to 24mpx. People expect it, and they count on Nikon to prove themselves worthy of people’s expectations.

What kind of coolpix is that?

  • John

FYI, the background picture of the D4s in the Responses Photo magazine is copied from the website of who is not mentioned. Just like Adorama’s 24 mp was.

    • One More Thought

I seriously doubt that a serious store like Adorama takes it’s info from You Know Who, or any blogger for that matter. Adorama gets info from the vendors, like Nikon. Period. It’s silly to think otherwise.

      • John

I guess we will see when the D4s is announced. If 16 mp then they copied from a blogger, 24 mp and much surprise, they got it from Nikon.

        • One More Thought

I should add that if Adorama was incorrect with the 24 mp, it doesn’t mean they got that from any blogger. That could have been some form of placeholder text, or maybe a legitimate error by whomever created the premature listing. Perhaps the person who created that web page thought it would be 24 mp and just inserted that.

That being said, I do think it to be odd that Adorama would get that wrong. At this point I would assume that some folks at Adorama already know the full specs of the camera.

I would also believe that Joe McNally has a preview sample of the camera and probably has already prepared his blog posting on the D4s for the when it is announced. I say this because Joe’s wife works for Adorama (after having worked for Nikon.)

          • John

            Very well.

There is no doubt Nikon didn’t like the early listing.

            Here’s to a 24 mp D4s!!

  • Guest

Nikon D4s will be improved 16mp with Expeed 4 pro 12 fps. And 24mp for D5 with 11 fps and D5 is already being tested.

    • http://nikonrumors.com/ Nikon Rumors

      I agree

    • http://www.metconphotos.com/ Christopher Nolan

call me funny, i love those specs too, but before I was had heard that D4S was on its way to the market place, I knew I was going to need to buy another D4, now it is going to be a D4S, . . . 16MP, 24MP, all good to me!

    • It’s Coming

      Yep.
      D5 next year.

      • broxibear

        Nope.

        • Proxibeer

          YUUP!

    • Marcel Speta

sounds realistic and logical. Then i am probably gonna wait for D5, D3s /12Mpx is still ok for me.

    • PSAGuy

Agree but at 16mp I won’t pay more for the D4s over the D4. If it is Nikon’s way of implementing a price increase, I’ll pass and find a used D4. If it’s the same bucks….I’m a buyer !

  • Pissed

I wonder whether we will get some freebie dust and oil like the D600 and also the excellent service from the service centre with helpful remarks like “learn to clean it yourself”

    • mikeswitz

      Clean it yourself!

  • Mr. Mamiya

Along with the D4S Nikon releases the eagerly anticipated new PC-E 17mm f/4 and updated superrotator versions of the current line of PC lenses that finally match the resolution of their D800 line of cameras even when shifted and tilted.

    Just dreaming.

  • Marcel Speta

just found on the internet some pictures from Winter Olympic Games taken by D4S…downloaded… and surprisingly the Exif was there!
So some pictures were at ISO 10000 directly into JPG but weird size. OK i checked the D4 manual how many pixels have JPG files and it seems that this is Medium JPG size from 16Mpx sensor.
So now i am 99% convinced D4S has 16MPx sensor.

Just for curiosity, used lenses were Nikkor 200-400/4 and 400/2.8 based on EXIF information.

  • wonderingPI
