A well deserved break from the Df coverage: Nikon Japan will be giving away a limited number of this pretty cool Nikkor alarm clock designed after the 24-70mm f/2.8 lens. The best part? The alarm is the sound of the D4 shutter (listen here). Unfortunately it seems that this offer will be available only in Japan.

    Win!

    • Polygon

      Oh god… This is perfect

    • kim

Is there a way I can download that mp3 file? I must have it!

      • kim

Done. This is so going to be my new alarm (I mean ararm) sound.

    • fred

      authentic, Made in Japan.

    • Jesse Cablek

The alarm in most cheap clocks (bzz bzz bzz bzz) annoys the crap out of me, even when I hear it on a TV show or elsewhere.. I wouldn’t want the same to happen to the beloved shutter sound.. so I wouldn’t actually want this alarm sound :/

  • deejaywolf

shut up and take my money!

  • Arthur Tazo

Good thing they didnt go with the D600 one. It would have been sputtering oil on your face to wake you up.

    • http://photographylife.com/ Nasim Mansurov

      Hahaha, that was good! :D

    • Daniel

so you better get up before it is too late

    • Andrew

Old news, another “delete” recommendation for Admin.

      • orpickaname

Because the whole planet can only be “late in the night” simultaneously, right?

        • Alvaro Márquez Arango

          Earth is flat.

        • Andrew

You’re right on this one, maybe I am dealing with someone with a different perspective.

get yourself a sense of humour

        • Andrew

I have a sense of humor, but not the type that hounds people “week after week” whose priced possession is being disparaged by anyone who wants to have a light moment.

          • Arthur Tazo

You are right. Your prized possession became a low “priced possession” as soon as Nikon released a D610! =D For the record, I myself own a D600.

            • Andrew

OK, if you own a D600 then I am sorry you feel that way.

I bought the Nikon D80 camera and one year later Nikon came out with the D90 which added video to the camera. Sure I was very disappointed, but it did not make me become cynical. I soon forgot about it and life goes on. And I consider the D80 a prized possession though it is one of many cameras I own including other Nikon and Panasonic cameras; and in addition, I have also bought Canon and Olympus cameras.

The D600 is an incredible camera even though some people have had issues with it that Nikon has owned up to, but also others have not any issues with the camera. So from my standpoint, I view the D600 no differently from the D80. I consider a camera as a photographic tool and the fact that one can afford to buy one is a great blessing. There are people around the world earning less than $1 a day and we fight over things that are so meaningless compared to the more critical survival needs of life.

      • joey

How alarming, your agenda appears to be to attack anyone who criticizes your D600. Hit the snooze button.

        • Andrew

          editing…

      • mfletch

Wow. Lighten up. I’m a happy D600 owner and don’t see anything wrong with a little joke.

        • Andrew

I feel much empathy for the other people (and I am sure you do!) who also own the D600 and are not happy about the constant jokes and they have voiced their views in not so pleasant a tone (as your response) on this blog.

How many kids come home crying every day because other kids are picking on them? Sometimes (not all the time mind you or else we will become like joke-stars) we need to make the joke-stars unhappy – that way they can find a new set of humors. And some of these guys are not joke-stars, they are trouble makers! So I really do not feel apologetic making this joke less humorous. I have overlooked many such jokes and neither is it my job to respond to them, but sometimes people (those telling jokes) need to be a little aware of the sensitivity of certain issue.

The other day someone lamented that they had just bought the D600 and about six weeks later Nikon came out with the D610, he was disappointed because his timing was a little off. I felt sorry for him as many people would have felt. I wanted to say something to comfort him, but I felt maybe he just needed to voice his feelings, so I did not comment. You might be a professional photographer and may value your equipment because it is a tool for your profession. But some people really do treasure their camera and the constant taunting for them has become a little more that “a little joke.”

          • Andrew

I dunno, I thought it was pretty funny. There are thousands of people with thousands of these cameras but there are HUNDREDS of thousands of people without them. Just because you own one doesn’t mean we can’t have a little fun, and telling off everyone who teases about the D600 issue is 1) Hiding negative publicity Nikon probably deserves, and 2) very futile (sheer numbers..).
You might as well go tell everyone who hates foreign cars that Toyota is awesome, because they will care about as much toward that opinion. Throw the statistics at them too, still won’t matter.

Other D600 owners above seem not to care…why? Because they are adults probably, not the “kids that come home crying,” as you mention. You sound like the kid, to be honest. Crying about things like this just makes those who bully more apt to bully you because you sound vulnerable. I hate it, but that’s how it seems to work, so don’t be surprised if you’re fighting “bullies” a lot with this mentality. I would suggest learning from comments you think have so much weight behind them and perhaps consider buying a Canon? Of course then you’d get “bully” Nikon shooters joking about the inferior glass or something. I dunno, I don’t tease about tools.
Perhaps though, selling your D600 won’t loose more than a few hundred and by then you hopefully have gotten enough use out of your “treasure[ed]” camera to justify the costs.

Also, it is a good camera and the oil issue is actually quite a small one. For many “adults,” cleaning a DSLR sensor is a regular routine that you shouldn’t care about having to do. Unless you never change lenses and don’t photograph much, then just send it to someone who isn’t scared to carefully wipe a piece of glass. Either way, you should see that these jokes really are jokes…because from a factual standpoint they have no real validity. If you want to get emotional, that’s your right, but I wish it weren’t about “a photographic tool,” that a for-profit company made to take your money.

You could consider perhaps spreading the notion I mentioned by telling people interested in a new FF DSLR like the D610; that the D600 is still a fine camera; rather than complaining about jokes made in jest. Your audience will listen much more readily, and your opinion will be a valid point to someone looking to buy an expensive tool.
I say this as someone interested in a second FF backup DSLR, happily welcoming the immanent D600 price drops. I have read some of your other comments and while I have NO idea how you fair as a photographer; your knowledge of Nikon’s market seems decent and could be helpful, especially to people in my position. Instead what I saw from you was buyer’s remorse written all over your post and if I didn’t know better I’d probably avoid buying a D600 because of how you complained.

To conclude, all these jokes have little meaning from an adult perspective if you think about it more carefully, and I think you should take this as “a little joke.” If you let this get to you I hate to think what working with you is like.

Learn to live a little and worry about things that matter, that’s my suggestion. You said yourself “There are people around the world earning less than $1 a day and we fight over things that are so meaningless compared to the more critical survival needs of life.”

            …it’s just a camera. ;)

            Good luck, Andrew.

            -Andrew (lol)

Get a life….and yes, I’m posting as a guest because as your mother, I know it would hurt if you knew it was me telling you this. You need a life son.

        Hi, Admin

What happened to change the order of the articles on the main page?
I mean, the older “pre-order”article is showing right bellow this article, while the newer “hands up”, sorry, “hands on preview” is showing in 3rd place.
Never have seem that before, does it has a reason?

  • Vic Lau

    Only 2000?!

  • photoroto

    Finally, a pure alarm clock!

    • fred

      Analog too.

None of that digital mumbo jumbo.

      • arda

it’s digital but with analog ui i guess

  • ararm

Nikon’s new niche product, ararm clocks!

  • Goose

I heard Fuji is doing a similar alarm clock, but with the X100 shutter sound.

  • Global

You might want to bring up some of those “Links to Buy” up for the Nikon Df — I’m pretty sure this is a commission day for you. Cha-ching, haha. Well-deserved, as well, should anyone purchase through your affiliate IDs. Hope people do.

  • Global
  • Cedric

Do you know the conditions how to get one? A colleage of mine is in Japan next week and I’d have asked him to get me one.

    • Jeffrey Friedl

There’s a long list of lenses on the page… if you buy one from an authorized domestic (Japan) dealer during the campaign period (Nov 14 – Jan 13) and send a copy of the receipt or warranty card, along with a special application paper that folds into its own envelope (see PDFs at the bottom), you might get one. (They say it’s a limited run, so I don’t know what they’ll do if they sell more lenses than they have clocks. It’s probably written there on the page somewhere, but I haven’t read that carefully).

They do specifically say that it’s for those residing in Japan and able to receive Japan post, so that may nix your idea…. /-:

  • Marcel

I want this!!! They must sell it in Japan… AND in The Netherlands :D

  • ereshoping

Inspired use of excess lens inventory. Who said Nikon cant innovate?

Next up … large zoom lenses turned into stereo ipod docks or hifi speakers, bedside table lamps (insert your choice of use here) :)

    • Polygon

I’d buy an 800-1200 based subwoofer for my HT :P

  • Marek Moi

…and after few weeks you’ll totally hate any shutter sounds, so you’ll sell all your (D)SLR gear and buy Nikon 1 instead.

  • Polygon

Nope. It’s an actual d4 shutter taking pictures of you waking up and sending them to the NSA

  • stormwatch

Again a Nikon product without video, wi-fi and gps….this is getting really serious.

    • Eric Calabros

      a Pure Wake Up

    • Dweeb

      Damn straight.

  • pp

    where is the VR?

    • PILLA

how many Mp??? and fps?????????????? aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

      • Truth

        24hr MP with variable FPS…OMG

  • Sash

Nikon often gives away those goodies in Japan, you need to buy certain products during a specific time period and then you simply redeem the goodie by post.

  • Move On

    “More Df coverage coming tomorrow.”
Please, No! Is there really anything worthwhile left to say about that?
Now, when do we get the serious stuff ie a D4x and a D400?

    • Narretz

A nice roundup of opinions would be nice. I wouldn’t be surprised if the overall reception was lukewarm.

  • FinchBug

    Can the DF mount it?

  • orpickaname

Actually, hearing that sound while you’re asleep will only make you dream about doing something weird with a camera.

  • Pure BS

Nikon is screwing the pooch lately, first the Df, then this clock.

  • Pure BS

  • Low Chee Hor

the man will never wake up with this alarm clock….hahaha

  • James Conkle

Anyone else reminded of Shabba by the middle part of the alarm sound?

  • Forgot my username

Great! Now I can take pictures of my girlfriend in the bedroom, and when she’s alarmed by the shutter, I will just say the alarm wasn’t set correctly!

    • don’t wake up please

      +1

    • Guest

Remember to post the pictures here.

  • Frank Marquart Jr

I heard they are making a new one for next year ‘Alarm x’….!

  • Mike

Forget the alarm clock…..how can I get that as a ring tone?

    • Pete Grady

Not that hard. Record it on your computer using a program called Wire Tap. Then get file using a ring tone app. Tech geeks probably have a simpler way.

      • Kjartan Clausen

Yeah, us tech geeks right click on the link, save the file and drag and drop it to our phones. From there, just select it as a ringtone.

  • newoldmate

    Only $1000.

  • http://www.davidiam.com/ davidiam photo

Finally… its at my bedside again.

  • Crackity Jones

If I were Nikon, I’m not sure I’d be celebrating the fact that my shutter is loud enough to serve as an alarm clock.
    Nevertheless, I’ll take two.

  • AllinsonsPhotography

no where near as nice as the promo clock the made in the 80′s http://www.ebay.com/itm/NIKON-CAMERA-CLOCK-VINTAGE-1983-/350725667378

  • DonD

Absolutely! I want one too! It would take long, some third party will copy it on the cheap.

  • Pete Grady

Now THIS is a Nikon a want. WHERE CAN I GET ONE OF THESE?!!!

  • usa

    Retro analog face. Just sayin’

  • WOW WEEEEE

THE Question is will it attach to the NIKON DF ???
    :/

Nikon will release six videos… the last one will be Wake the F##k up…. click click click click……..

  • Max

What a relief! Just for a moment I thought that Nikon didn’t have a good reason for making us wait for those new DX lenses we all desperately want. But now that I see the R&D guys were working on something as important as a novelty alarm clock I can rest easy. Hopefully those Nikon mousetraps made from unwanted D600 shutter releases should be ready real soon…

  • The Photographer

Just made that sound my ringtone – I’ll love it ;)

    • ereshoping

      Tried that with my V1 – couldn’t hear it ! :)

  • Pure Photography

Now the big question is – is it retro enough?

  • Nikon Survey Team

You can provide your feedback about Df, Nikon’s survey is here:

    https://webc.nikonimaging.com/form/pub/info/df_en

  • Narretz

But does it have 51 AF points?

    • Max

      I don’t think it has any point….

  • plan3s

    I AM WAKING YOU UP

  • Jebagi Erol Paker

Seem Nikon is capitalizing on the brand name of Nikon. After the retro camera at that price and this clock, I bet more items bearing their logo will be released. Mobile phone, watch camera etc….

  • camaman

Since this is an official Nikon item it would be very cool and special if the sound eminated from the real shutter. Is it?
    Probably just a sample…

    • preston

That would be the best way to break my bad habit of only waking up after 2 or 3 snoozes 10 minutes apart – gotta preserve the shutter!
