    Awesome

  • LarryC

I sure hope it won’t be a disappointment.

    • http://Flickr.com/inthemist InTheMist

      I’m nervous.

      • Aldo

        hug me…

        • 3000Kelvin

Didn’t you mean “mug me”? At 3K, that would apply…

      • Abhinav Singhai

        hahahhaha

      • Aldo

        aww I liked ” I’m nervous” better sounded more legit… :P

        • http://Flickr.com/inthemist InTheMist

          Hehe, sorry for the edit.

      • Harry Nutt

By asking 3 grand for the camera and 500 plus for a silver strip of tin foil on a old 50mm 1.8g. Yep…I am preparing for the worst.

      • Retro Premium

If you wear Armani and drink organic water, DF is for you. Else, please get a DSLR with specs.

        • Mr Armani Suit

I wear an Armani suit, drink organic water, eat unicorn steaks and snort only the finest coke of the bosoms of super models.

I’ll get one just to compliment the rest of my Nikon bodies. I’m betting here that mister Retro Premium here wants people to cancel their pre-orders so he can get his first.

Either that or he’s jelly that I’m on my gold plated yacht.

Sent from my gold and diamond encrusted iphone.

          • Kynikos

Fake post. You shoot Leica (but ONLY the Hermes special edition of course).

    • Rafa R

me too, just sold my D700 and I´m selling my X100 in order to get this baby.

      • mikeswitz

Don’t know if I woulda sold my x100. Clearly a very different camera.

        • Rafa R

I havent gotten good results with it, guess its not for me, but my D700 and me used to get along very well, and I could use a small DSLR for personal stuff, my D800 is destined 100% for the job and my D4 and D3x are a bit too big in my opinion to take comfortably on to holiday trips without thinking Im on the job still…

          • mikeswitz

            totally with you!
I’ve had very nice results with my X Pro-1 and my D800 with 2.8 zooms have been outstanding. The question is can this camera be a great compromise?

        • hexx

          ditto

      • Mark James Luzzi

x100 was a very over rated camera

        • Jon McGuffin

I think the issue was/is with a lot of these mirrorless cameras is that, for what they are, they’re really great. But when you stack them up against their DSLR brethren they really don’t yet compete or compute lbs for lbs. I think this will change with time though.

          • Mark James Luzzi

I own 2 Olympus OM-D body’s and Its the best camera I have owned in 30 years The Fuji was a very overhyped camera For a camera in its price range it did not perform Crappy autofocus Lens wide open so so And the time it takes to process the image to a memory card was as bad as a point and shoot I sold mine 2 moths after purchasing it I bought a OM-D and haven’t looked back I like it so much I purchased a second body

            • mikeswitz

Which x camera did you supposedly own? Do you even own a Nikon? Or do you just ramdomly post on forums?

            • Mark James Luzzi

              I owned a X100
I do NOT currently own any Nikon Cameras
              I have owned Nikon FTN F2 EM F100 N90 D50 D40 D60 D80 D300 D2x

            • Mark James Luzzi

I also own Rolleiflex 6002 and 6001 and Contax rangefinder camera

            • mikeswitz

So never owned or shot with a FF camera? You might want to try one.

            • Mark James Luzzi

If they come out with one like the Fuji with out its terrible quirks Good autofocus no long lag processing images A good lens wide open and full frame I can say the Fuji was the most over rated camera I have ever owned I was not even impressed with its build quality I will see if this new Nikon fills what I like Ideally I would like a full frame Olympus OM-D type camera

            • mikeswitz

Fair enough. If the Oly works for you, that’s great! But a lot of your complaints have been dealt with by Fuji through firmware updates. My X Pro-1 has been a workhorse as long as I shoot primes from 60mm and below. The Fuji lenses are outstanding.

        • Carl

As far as I have seen, the ratings have always said great looking camera with great IQ and a lot of quirks. Spot on, if you ask me.

        • mikeswitz

          Do you have one?

          • Carl

I had the X100 and I have the X100s. Use it alongside my D700 on quite a few assignments. Love the IQ and color rendering. Very flexible files.

        • hexx

yeah, speaking BS… slow and blah blah blah, why don’t you get a proper SD card and stop moaning? I’m really tired of these ‘alleged’ owners of Fuji cameras. Been shooting X100 since summer 2011, X-Pro1 since summer 2012 – don’t share any of your experiences. If you expected it to perform AF-wise like D700/D3, then it’s your fault that you don’t understand benefits/drawbacks of CDAF vs PDAF

      • Pete Grady

You sold your D700 before you really know what this camera is going to be? Hope that works out for you…after all, this IS the same company that introduced the Nikon 1 system to great fanfare.

        • Rafa R

yeah.. you are right, but my D700 was my personal camera, still have my D3x, D800 and D4. I love the size of these new model, I think is gonna be great.. I´m hoping on it

          • Wallet

You definitely need DF… you gotta have your FOUR FX bodies at one time!

            • Rafa R

to be honest its simply D800 way too many MP to use as a personal all around camera, my D3x has been with me a long time and love it, best skin tones in my opinion, so I dont want to sell it, and the D4 is my high ISO camera.. Nikon has one problem, it doesnt sell a do it all camera. Thats the deal.

            • albin

              I suppose you mean D2X?
And as for the D800 being too much for personal use.. maybe.. iit IS addictive, though!

            • Rafa R

nop I mean D3x I do love its skin tones

            • mikeswitz

rafa, you don’t have to justify your choices to anyone. Whatever works for you is good.

        • mikeswitz

Have you ever shot with a Nikon 1. Are you a diver? No I think not.

          • Pete Grady

I have shot with a Nikon 1. Didn’t feel that the quality of the pictures matched the price of the camera and the lenses. It all felt a little cheap to me, too. I’m not sure who the camera is targeted at (and evidently neither does the market as it hasn’t sold that well). But, though I’m not a diver, the UW nonetheless looks like a hit, so maybe that will get things going for the 1 line.

      • Anita Dick

On a camera you have not even held, tested, and tried out…hummm real winner here.

        • Rafa R

          I have a D4, D3x and a D800.. I can take the risk

    • mikeswitz

It’s clearly going to be a disappointment for some.

      • M!

always, those who wanted a replacement for D700, D300 and those who were pissed by their D600. And those whom this camera is clearly not designed for.

  • Thomas

    The Final Countdown!!!

  • this_isnt_real

i’m buying this before anyone searches for something to complain about. i’ll figure it out for myself, for better or for worse.

    • Late

if this is good in price and spec… get ready for a mad wait like D800

  • photographer

    Are you optimistic, Peter ?

    • http://nikonrumors.com/ Nikon Rumors

      yes, always :)

      • photographer

        :)

      • mikeswitz

Is it still with kit lens and without?

        • Jon McGuffin

I’m thinking this will only sell as a kit with the new 50 1.8G and I’m going to put at $2699 price on it with lens. That’s my hunch.

          • maybe

You think that is logical to build a model that is compatible with almost all the lenses Nikon produced, emphasis on manual focus, and only sell it in kit with a 50mm 1.8G? We’ll see.

  • Anjan

If this has “designer label” high price (and less function)…. it will sweet news for the whole food organic salad eating crowd in the morning, when they go for their jog and yoga…

  • Aldo

    23:59:59.999….

  • Belicosos

All this reminds me of the bank robber in Dirty Harry… “I gotta know”

    • Belicsos

Well, do you feel lucky punk??

  • http://www.flickr.com/photos/kgnixer niXerKG

How sure are you it’s the Nikon Df? Remember when you were so sure it was the D95 before it became the D7000.

Df just doesn’t sound right unless they mean Digital F.

    • M!

Nikon Df = Nikon Don’t Fukup!

  • azur

If it is priced according to the specifications, I’m in.

If it is overpriced, I’m out (after all there are other great options).

    • eissenel

or.. wait for another few months..

    • http://Flickr.com/inthemist InTheMist

Thom Hogan reported the results of his poll where “74% of the responses indicated that they were interested in the camera” but only “Only 30% of the respondents would pay US$2000 or more.”

      http://www.dslrbodies.com/newsviews/the-fm-numbers.html

      • Mark

25% intention to buy is actually a very good scores in favor of the DF at the higher price point.

      • Jon McGuffin

Very unscientific and he’d be the first to admit that. His audience is not indicative of the camera purchasing public at large (though I’m a HUGE fan of him and his site).

      • Pete Grady

He opines that if the DF is priced near or below the D610, it will cripple D610 sales. But I don’t see that at all. Many want video and lots of automation and contemporary handling. This camera is an alternative to other Nikon models, not a competitor.

      • delayedflight

As I’ve posted in someone quoting Thom about the DF pricing.

Most of the respondents are too cheap to shell out for those high end features that they want, it’s a skewed poll as it reflects the opinions of only those who bothered to a) read Thom’s website and b) bothered to respond.

What they’re all after is a Ferrari at Toyota prices.

Seriously people should face the fact that if they want all those high end features they should be prepared to pay for it instead of whinging that Nikon won’t price a camera specced like a D4 at D3200 prices. They rationalise it by saying Nikon will make back the losses in lens sales, then go off to buy third party lenses or second hand anyway because they’re too thigh fisted.

    • Thyl Engelhardt

Depends on what you count under “specifications”. How much are you willing to pay for the following specifications (just guessing, as they are not out yet):
      -Traditional bright focussing screen
      -Exchangeable focussing screen
-prism finder suitable for manual focussing
-Dedicated, marked, and lockable shutter speed dial
      -Dedicated, marked ISO dial
      -dedicated, marked white balance dial
-Reduced menu set (no effects, no different resolutions, no thousend video options, actually, no nothing)
      -physical switch for timer
To me, each of the above specification items might well be worth USD100 (o.k., not the timer)
No longer in the rumors’ mill:
-hand operated shutter crank lever with build-in generator for recharging battery: USD150

      • azur

Hi Thyl, I cannot judge the price and the specifications before they are out, but I really wholeheartedly agree with you that a big, bright prism-finder with exchangeable
focusing-screens suitable for manual focusing, would be worth a substantial premium !
At the end I’ll judge the ratio between price and specifications by a comparison with e.g. D610 and D800 or other FF cameras from the competition. From there I’ll pick the best bang for the buck tool.

  • skinnymakespretty.com

ill still buy it. im a pure photographer =)

    • Aldo

      I shoot video with the d800 once in a while… I’m unpure…

      • Rad Alzyoud

I’ve had D5200, D600 and D800E and I never used the video. Not even a second!

        • Aldo

          then you are PURE!

          • No Shelf Space

RICH and PURE… why buy so many bodies?

            • mikeswitz

Whats wrong with rich and pure?

      • Marc W.

I only use antique cameras. My D700 doesn’t have video.

    • neversink

I guess I’m an unsure photographer. I shoot with a D800 and a D4, so according to the latest reasoning that makes me impure, but then does it make me a pure photographer when I pick up my M6 or Mamiya 7ii or even an old F2???? Help, I’m confused. What am I? pure? or impure? Argggghhhhh “I yam why I yam…”

  • NFan

    $2499.00

  • Early Adopter

No hesitation. I will be one of the first in the U.S. Hell or high water, doom or gloom, pure ray of sunshine… we will see. I’ve got $3k backing up my debit card.

    • http://Flickr.com/inthemist InTheMist

At $3k I’ll be reaching for my wallet veeeeeerrry slowly.

      • Nikon Tom Ford

If you wear Armani and drink organic water, DF is for you.
        Else, please get a DSLR.

Nikon’s new mojo… make vintage Maserati body with a ford focus engine inside!

        • delayedflight

          The DF is a DSLR…

        • Davo

In your analogy, a Nikon D4 sensor equals a Ford Focus engine??? You must really like your Ford Focus.

          • Tom Ford

Lol. 16 MP does not equal D4 sensor.

also, even it were using D4′s 16mp sensor… but, with D5200 AF and exposure meter… its like using jet fuel in a lawn mower

            • Davo

So you’ve decided that the AF rumours are facts and the sensor rumours are (rightly so) just rumours now eh?

          • toby

I think he’s referring to the D600 autofocus since that is what is relevant to speed….not the sensor

            • Davo

Yea I know what he meant. I just disagree with the analogy. A lot of people can do without AF, no car can do without an engine.

          • Derek Smith

What is around the sensor friend? D4 sensor is getting old and isn`t that terribly impressive to be honest anymore. That coupled with a subpar AF system and no video!?! Not for the price they are going to want for it.

            • Davo

You are right in that any of the current crop of FF sensors will do. They all perform very well. But I wouldn’t consider the D4 sensor old though, in fact I’d prefer it over either of the Sony FF sensors but of course all our needs and wants differ.
I think the deliberate removal of video is very much to do with the whole divergent philosophy.
Of course I’d also rather the CAM3500FX but the price will reflect it.
We don’t know what Nikon wants for the Df, nor are we certain of the specs yet.
But at least it’s only one sleep away :)

      • mikeswitz

I think the 3k is with kit lens which may or may not be wonderful. If you ordered from B&H or Adorama you can always return it if you don’t like it. Takes balls to be an early adaptor. Or at least a debit card.

        • Wedding Man

          There is no 3k.

          • mikeswitz

Did you mean “appox. $3k”, because that is what I meant

  • idp69

    can’t wait…

  • Tristin Hsieh

    Nikon lets do it.

  • Aldo

Will this camera have an optical pass filter? I remember seeing somewhere it wouldn’t.

    • Jon McGuffin

At only 16Mb and considering the D4 does, my guess is that it will.

    • Early Adopter

Hope not. Seems like I saw that, too.

      • Aldo

wondering if this means images would be “sharper” compared to those of the D4

        • hexx

I believe it was part of that rumour which admin later marked as wrong.

  • Rad Alzyoud

My credit card is ready. Make sure you have links to Canadian stores, please! Thanks admin!

  • Early Adopter

With a split image RF screen, the perfect complement to my cherry F3HP plus manual focus lens kit (20/28/35/55/85/105/135/200). Plus a clean D600 with 24-70 and 70-200(f/4). Sweet. Go Nikon

  • Pete Grady

    $1,699 with lens.

    • Aldo

      that’s a good down payment…

      • Pete Grady

we’ll see. I’m basing that on the fiction that seems most supported in terms of specs…single SD card, battery from D5200, no video and a guy in dress casuals roaming around a sophisticated tourist trap to promote it. It’s definitely NOT a pro camera. So I just don’t see it being that high of a price.

        • Jon McGuffin

This is a good point, I hope you’re right and it’s in that $2000 range or less..

        • Rad Alzyoud

          A good point Pete

        • Aldo

I hope you are right too… but I think that price is very unlikely

        • Carl

Can someone pls enlighten me – what is the problem with single SD card? I’m a working photographer for 10 yrs – what have I been missing?

          • Pete Grady

I’m working, too, and shoot a D300s. I send RAW files to the CF slot and jpegs to the SD card. I send the jpegs to my clients as proofs, then use the RAW files to edit for the finals they select. Saves a ton of time as opposed to just shooting RAW and having to prep them for consideration.

            • Carl

I’ve always been shooting both, but I like to compare the files side by side in PS. Different methods – different needs :-)

          • Global

Keep going backwards, Carl. Is 1/4000 an upgrade over 1/8000 as well? Is no video an upgrade over video, as well? Is 1/200 synch an upgrade over 1/250? Keep going backwards……?

            • Carl

Where did I say one card slot was an upgrade over two card slots, “Global”? I was merely asking a question in a fairly polite way.
It’s not like every new camera has to have more of everything in order to be a good camera, even though quite a number of people seem to believe so. This is just a different Nikon camera, some will love it and some will not. I’m a Nikon and Fuji owner and I do this for a living. I buy the cameras that appeal to me and deliver what I think is good quality. That’s all there is to it. Or…?

            • Wedding Man

“Is 1/4000 an upgrade over 1/8000 as well?”

Too much is being made of this when compared with the D700. The D700 has a minimum 200 ISO, whereas this will almost certainly have minimum 100 ISO, which will cancel out that disadvantage over the D700 / D3 for most.

        • Rafa R

Im with you Pete, I dont see it being that high, but then again… I just remembered the price for the 58mm f1.4G

          • Pete Grady

well, they’re showing it here with a 50 f/1.8…that’s a LOT cheaper lens, especially if it’s just seven blade, maybe no motor…we don’t know yet. And it’s what we don’t know at this point that makes everything I’m saying (and everybody else for that matter) just a shot in the dark. It’s all fun, though.

        • gly

I hope you’re right. I’ll need the extra money for a new couch because that’s where I’ll be sleeping after the ball and chain finds out. lol

          • Rock Kenwell

“Time to grow a pair and reclaim your manhood.”

            Pure guts.

        • NikonDude

          About $3K with kit lens.

          Confirmed.

          • Pete Grady

            Confirmed where?

            • http://nikonrumors.com/ Nikon Rumors

We went trough this already, nothing is confirmed yet.

            • Pete Grady

I know, I was being sarcastic.

        • Davo

Think the SD card and smaller battery are for size considerations. No video’s a deliberate omission for this camera’s philosophy. Didn’t pay much attention to the actor actually.
I’d also rather pay less but be prepared to expect less of a camera though if the price is low. With the A7/r out in the field, the Df still needs to offer value for money even if they turn out to be very different cameras. So I’m ok with a higher price too, as long as there’s value in that higher price.

          • Global

Exactly, this is NOT a pro camera. Its a nice camera. But not pro by current market standards. I have a theory that Nikon kept the D400 spot open for THIS camera to slide in place. Release price will be a couple hundred too high, but this camera will only be worth $1700.

        • toby

I hope you are right I want to upgrade from my D7000!

        • umeshrw

Think of this as women’s couture. Less costs more.

    • Nikon D50

      Are you bidding on ebay?

      • Pete Grady

        ??

  • Jun

This seems to pair perfectly with my 50mm 1.2 AIS

  • Ed

What are the chances the big dial on the top left is ISO & Kelvin. I’d like a big kelvin dial!

    • Thyl Engelhardt

That would be great. Including additional positions for FL-D, FL-B, and some custom setting.

  • Daniel

not learn the lesson yet? Never be the first adopter !!!
Wait for a couple of months

    • Global

Exactly, if this truly is positioned lower than the D600 — which it appears to be, by specs — then consumers would be wise to wait for reviews.

  • French Fries

The more I see it, the more I think about the specifications.
I think it will be placed just above D800 as a price point.

    FD vs. D800:
    Retrostyle ++
    Megapixels -
    AF/On AEL buttons =
    Shutterspeed -
    FPS + (I guess)
    Memory slot – (SD Only)
    Build Quality =
    AF -

The FD seems to be a better camera then de D610 and equals very much the D800. If this new FD camera will be fitted with a non AA filter, it will definitely be more then the current D800 and will probably be priced against the Canon 5D MKIII.

I hope to be wrong, but thinking about it I would definitely not be surprised if this camera is going to be priced a little higher then de D800.

Pricing DF against Canon 5D MKIII would be really bad decision. 5DMKIII is photo/video camera (used for the video 90% times around the world) and DF is a still camera only.

D800 = video + 1/8000 (much better for PRIME lenses)
DF = no video + 1/4000 (consumer level, like D5000)

D800 is higher-end. The DF shape of Plastic Edges does not make something high-end, it could make it a novelty or a toy though. Hard lines can pinch your hands, the sculpted bodies of modern Dslrs are contoured to hands that need to support weight. Old slrs were not so heavy so they could have sharper edges without pinches hands.

The DF clearly belongs where the D400 should be. Its not high end, unless the ISO is one or more stops higher than the D610.

And the AF system will really tell us, as well. 39pts vs. 51 pts. 39pts = this is a low end D610 crippled to not have video in exchange for what? Straight edges vs contoured edges? One memory slot.. or two? Same 1/4000? Is it 1/200 or 1/250 synch? How many fps? Any ISO full stops brighter? Hm.

$1700 for now. Hipster kids will buy a fashion statement, if their parents give them money, and old guys will try to buy memories of their cameras in their youth……. but the rest of us value a camera by its qualities other than superficiality and internet commercials.

Now we do the same for a race horse versus a Porsche (both being means of transportation):
      Retrostyle ++
      Horsepower –
operating elements + (if you know how to ride)
      reagibility +
      meters per second -
fueling slot – (organic food Only)
Build Quality + (degree of self-repair)
      AF + ;-)
Will that correctly cover the essence of either the Porsche or the horse?

With the fairly low pixel density of a 16mp FX sensor, do you really want no AA filter?

I have a theory that Nikon kept the D400 spot open just for bringing out THIS camera. I think the D600 fiasco screwed up Nikons timelines. They probably had to fix the shutter for this camera as well.

If its at least 1 full stop brighter than the D610 + 9fps shutter speed + 1/8000 + 1/250 + 51 focus points + longer battery life than the D610, then it could be the sportier younger sister of the D800 = $2500.

But if lacking in most of those features + no video, its just a fashionable item for metros, most people will be better served with a D7100 or D610, and itll be the kid brother of the D610, where the D400 should have been, at $1700.

If he is beyond D610, forget D400. Time to go FX, as Nikons new philosophy said. Above (overD800) in a couple of month Nikon show new D4x. Only speculations of D400 is 7D II rumored specs. Will see.

    Bring it! bring the rain!!!

so the recap based on what we now so far is (rumours):
    ~ $3000
    16mp (D4?) sensor
    Expeed 3
    5.5 FPS
no AF info but probably the one from D610
    ‘retro’ mode
    ‘G lens’ mode

Still, would prefer it to have 24mp sensor without optical low pass filter. I just don’t buy D4 sensor in it, that sensor was designed for camera used for sports/action/wildlife and comes in the body which allows you to shoot those, it’s fast, sturdy and so on. What we have here is complete opposite – retro controls, not as well built, no fast AF, no FPS – and therefore I’m not quite sure I understand the choice of the sensor.

You haven’t been listening. There is no price yet. Price is the one thing we don’t have any hint about.

you haven’t ready my comment properly, in the first sentence there’s ‘rumours’ in the brackets
