Weekly Nikon news flash #183

  • Nikon Australia posted on their blog that the D4 and D800 are the "first DSLR cameras to pass the very elaborate European Broadcasting Union (EBU) test, commonly referred to as the BBC Test." Thephoblographer checked the reports and found that the D800 is actually not recommended at the end of the document: "This camera cannot be recommended for serious programme-making." Update: BBC states that neither the Nikon D4 or D800 are acceptable for broadcast.

    Europe should leave the serious movie making to Hollywood so who cares what they say about the D800.

      Really? LMFAO… European films and in particular, French films have something to say and have content, other than guns, explosions, and special effects. Of course a troll like you probably doesn’t get great film. Anyway, the D800 is primarily intended to be a STILLS camera, just because it shoots video quite well doesn’t automatically get it a high rating. Thank goodness for European and Asian film making, or all we would get to see would be boring American crap at the cinema…

        dont campare the equipment needed for slow, melodramatic, art house european films… those can be done with, probably, basic equipment.

        Hollywood mega-block busters, hard action, and green-screened films… need advanced camera, multiple cameras, high fps… and all them big bucks equipment.

        So, yea… usa decides whats good for movie making : )

        Come on. There are some amazing American films. There are some amazing French films. There are some awesome British TV programmes and movies. We’ve all seen interesting work from Africa, Asia, even China. Many of the actors that America loves today are from Europe, Asia, New Zealand, Australia, Central and South America, and even Canada.

        The fact is, many folks used the 5DMarkII, a camera which I for one have not held back from criticizing. That said, it has been put to great use, and has produced some amazing imagery (moving and stills) for some amazing productions. No doubt the same thing is happening with the D600, D800 and D4, along with a whole slew of other cameras recently brought to market. Can anyone say Blackmagic Cinema Camera? We have some awesome tools, and that means more great films from all over the world.

        And just because Kim Kardashian is popular here in the States does NOT mean we all love her. I barely know who the hell she even is. That, given the fact that what little I do know of her compels me to learn as little more of her and her family as I can. It seems imprudent to generalize about other cultures. That’s where you lose out on all the amazing things you can learn from them.

        too bad the most beautiful images ever have been shot by the BBC, namely Earth and Life series. And in hollywood 50% isn’t even recorded, it’s made in 3D or special FX

        Quality films for my part. There have been some great movies out of the USA. (Do the Cohen bros. count?) I suppose it goes that some of the best movies, for commentary, thought and conversation provoking storylines, and yes, also great cinematography, have been shot on quite basic equipment with wonderful film makers using tight editing, great lighting and angles for mood and effect rather than the USA pop gun blockbuster effect. Simply for documentaries and news stories, the D800 should be ok shouldn’t it? After all, isn’t the TV series “Wilfred” shot on D800 nowadays?

      This test has nothing to do with European film making … it was EBU – Europe Broadcast Association e.g. television …
      But, even if they don’t recommend it in Television I am sure it will be used and it has already ben used in Swedish commercial television channel 4 (TV4).

        EBU recommends Canon for euro pron. Cause you need a big canon for pron.

        Surely it don’t matter one iota. I’m sure the Kennedy assassination film wasn’t turned down because it was shot on amateur super 8 or whatever was being used at the time. Content, not technical perfection, trumps every time.

    Where are DxO’s camera/lens tests on he D800 with the 24-70mm and 70-200mm lens? Does anyone know what is taking them so long to catch up and why they focused their early D800 testing on Sigma lenses?

      Winston Churchill – the master of old foxes – said that he does not care about any statistics that he did not rig himself.
      DxO might need some time to fiddle with the “weightings” a bit more in this case, to achieve the desired test results.

    The D600 is overpriced for what it is offering. The D7000 makes more sense for having better features and is only half of the price.

        I’m an FX fan and am still trying to figure out whether the D600 is worth it, but there are 3 giant step backwards that I seen the D600 take from the D7000 (well, 4 if you count the huge price increase). D7000 is better in the following ways:
        1. 1/8000 max shutter speed.
        2. 1/250 max true flash sync speed (yes I’m aware of AutoFP and it sucks)
        3. The Auto Focus points cover the entire frame in the D7000 and are mostly in the center of the D600. How often do I use the entire viewfinder? Actually, quite often because I focus on the eyes and don’t put my subject in the middle. I suppose I could crop on the D600 and make it work, but that’s defeating the purpose of getting full from if I can’t use my entire sensor.

        More on point 3, many argue that the D800, along with the D3, D3s, and D4 only covers the DX portion of the screen too, though more of it, but again, why go backwards?

          That’s a bit of an exaggeration.

          1) nothin’ worth noting. I started to take serious photos with a Canon AE1 program, then used a Pentax ME-super and finally arrived home with a F-801-s, which i never used at 1/8000 except to hear what the noise was like. I must have taken few thousands of photos to this day with my D3s and I cannot remember of having used that speed once.
          2) ditto
          3) the AF points may be slightly less evenly spread across the frame, but the amount of light a FX will take in is so vastly superior the autofocus should work at least as well, if not better.

          all in all, if you do not feel the camera is what you need do not buy it, but leave the “huge step backward” be. A modern FX camera just below $2000 is not as big a bounty as a $1600 could have, but it’s a huge step forward nonetheless.

          @Arie, as someone who had a D7000 until recently, sold off when I got the D600, I can say that until you have used a D600 you really don’t understand. Touting specs is meaningless. Lets put your points in some perspective:

          PhaseOne 645DF – 1/125 flash sync for focal plane shutter, 1/4000 shutter speed and focus points don’t cover full frame either.

          I’m not saying you don’t need 1/8000, actually I have no clue what your needs are, I suspect you don’t either though, however if you are looking for the perfect spec camera you will be disappointed across the board.

          If you talk about freezing, I can freeze a hummingbird’s wings at f/11, shutter 1/200 and a flash duration of 1/20,000.

          Only time 1/8000 is of real use is 50mm f/1.4 wide open in broad daylight, then you have ISO 50 or ND filter and you pretty much at square one to the D7000.

          What would be more interesting is stating what you doing that makes the D600 insufficient for your needs. Soon as you figure that out, I think the right camera will become clear.

      I have seen samples from the D800, D600 and D7000. Let’s be honest, there isn’t much difference between the pictures. At the end of the process you can’t tell which picture came from a FF or DX camera, THEY ALL HAVE GOOD QUALITY.

      The D600 has too many crippled features, it is just not worth it. You are better off buying a D800 or a D7000.

    pretty sure the d800/d600 will do nothing to unseat canon’s 5d mk/ii/iii from being the dslr video camera of choice.

    In Denmark the D600 ships for DKK 13.875 equal to 1.495£
    or 2419 USD

    Not surprised the D800 isn’t passing the BBC test. It’s a nice “Video” camera, but honestly it’s more for stills.

    I’d rather go Canon or Sony if I were to buy a large sensor video camera. I actually own a XF300 which i use for most of my video work. Not everyone needs shallow DOF shots. ;)

    BTW the Canon XF300 DID pass the BBC test and is one of the cheapest cameras to do so.

    Looking at both documents (for D4 and D800e) my conclusion is that D800E did not pass the video test due to its lack of the anti-aliasing filter. This is exactly why I bough it. One thing I notice in the report that neither camera can achieve the full specified resolution of 1920X1080 but more like 1355X762. I wonder what lenses they used for testing. Perhaps, lower achieved resolution than what Nikon advertised is due to the lens. I wonder how the cameras would perform with the Zeiss compact prime lenses.
    So Nikon might be hiding something from us, or the testers are not to be trusted.
    Either way I really like the camera for still photography and the video is just a bonus.

      Who have tested D800E? The linked paper is about D800.

      You really need to read the report again. You appear to be confused on multiple issues.

      A – They tested the D800, NOT the D800E.

      B – The aliasing is conclusively shown to be partly due to software resampling. Nikon sacrificed accurate resampling for fast (power efficient) resampling.

      C – The lenses used were demonstrably more than high enough resolution to get 1080 lines. IF the lenses were limiting resolution there wouldn’t be aliasing as the lens itself would be acting as an AA filter.

    The Usain Bolt D4 is not listed as a charity auction at all. Not saying he can’t give some of the money to charity, but if that were the case I assume he’d list it as such, but properly this time. It may have been a scam all along. I hate to see it get free publicity if that’s the case.

    Sony SLT-A57 is the best consumer DSLR for video. Just check out the samples on YouTube and you’ll be well amazed!!! I’m thinking of selling my FX glass and getting the Sony instead. I’ll keep my D7000 and 18-200mm as that’s the bomb for travel photography.

    Guys, all it says is from a technical and practical (i.e. connectivity) standpoint, these cameras are not recommended for broadcast use.

    Cellphones are not recommended for broadcast use. Youtube is not recommended for broadcast use. That doesn’t stop clips from either source being shown on TV. likewise no one is stopping you making a film with your D4.

    It is simply an admission that dSLRs are not comparable to a professional video camera, not in output quality, not in feature set.

    If you feel butthurt, congratulations: you are a Nikon fanboy.

      Dunno if you can speak from behalf of every network in the world. But for example there news stations on cities (eg: Buenos Aires) that do interviews or recordings out in the public with with an iPhone and later edit it for broadcast nationwide.

    The Canon 5D mk2 also didn’t pass the EBU test and people, including BBC, don’t care. So I don’t care if EBU did not recommend D800 or whatever… I still love my camera!!
