The eye-fi integration is interesting. I like that it will stay on for the transmission etc but does it seem to anyone else that this seems like nikon saying “we are gonna punt on developing our own solution for this” which I guess in some ways makes sense, but still…

    • Bryan

Sure, why should they develop Wi-fi in an SD card when they can charge you $900 for a Wireless Transmitter

      • PHB

They can’t charge me $900 for a WiFi dongle. I am a tight bastard with my cash.

The EyeFi is almost certainly going to be ‘sufficient’ for the typical user and the overpriced Nikon offering is probably going to be sufficiently better for some people to pay the extra for it.

But these are still introductory prices and deep discounts are still quite likely as production ramps up. Rather than discount the base price of the camera or offer money off a lens, expect to see these overpriced accessories thrown in as a ‘package’.

Incidentally, the reason the D800 does not support the WiFi dongle is likely that it was originally due to come out ahead of the D4.

I have tried using EyeFi and my experience is less than happy. It really does not work well for video

        • Greg

“Incidentally, the reason the D800 does not support the WiFi dongle is likely that it was originally due to come out ahead of the D4.”

Huh. Now that you say it, it seems obvious…

Iso6400 looks Great, even 12800 looks good, Resized would look even Better

Hey guys – see what this “m***n” is writing:

      http://fakechuckwestfall.wordpress.com/2012/02/07/nikon-d800-vs-canon-eos-1dx-image-quality/
“… any soft, color banded, noisy piece of shit image the D800 produces!…”

      Crazy person!!

      • mikils

Crazy website! disturbingly full of pointless profanity

      • mandrake

Just be glad you don’t have to go through life being that dude.

        • mikils

          Amen!

      • Royster

Any one of low intelligence and education has to resort to swearing .
I would not believe anything that this person has to say if it was for Nikon,Canon or any other camera

  • http://www.thejordancollective.com CaryTheLabelGuy [NR]

I REALLY wish Nikon integrated the new WT-5A wireless transmitter into the D800/E system. It may be a crazy $900, but it is the coolest wireless system in any DSLR to-date. Bravo to Nikon for the WT-5A. Brickbats to Nikon for charging $900 and not integrated it with the D800/E.

    • Gpereir4

      @CaryTheLabelGuy
Thanks for shutting that idiot down over at “Fake Chuck Westfall”! You made him look like an ignorant fool, with effortless style and grace. My compliments.

      • http://thejordancollective.com CaryTheLabelGuy [NR]

All I did was point-out the obvious! Nobody takes that guy seriously. He still hasn’t addressed my points about the Canon 1D X using high-ISO Noise Reduction @ ISO-1600. Have you seen those 1D X sample shots? They’re super soft from all of the NR being applied in-camera @ ISO-1600. Terrible indeed. The D3s doesn’t apply ANY high-ISO NR until over ISO-3200 and I’d expect the D4 to do the same.

        • Gpereir4

Yeah that guy is not a good source of journalism. Today was the only time I have ever seen his blog due to the link from this page. Yours were some of the only rational comments on that board.

I would not expect him to address the 1DX noise reduction…it would be a shame for him to have to taste his own foot after all his crazed rantings.

  • shivaswrath

Those pictures were actually quite enlightening…I mean, I think it’s about a stop worse than a D3, not equivalent, like many have led us on to believe…

    • http://www.thejordancollective.com CaryTheLabelGuy [NR]

In luminance noise, it’s about even with the D3/D700. In chroma noise, it’s better. We also don’t know what noise reduction was used in those files. They were developed with Capture NX2, so the NR would be totally different than an in-camera JPEG with high-ISO NR on high. I’m totally impressed and I own a D3s.

      • chris

this samples are without noise reduction ,this is how the raws look like

        • http://thejordancollective.com CaryTheLabelGuy [NR]

That’s what I thought, but I couldn’t follow the translated posts to disseminate what high-ISO noise reduction was used, if any.

How do you know for sure? Where you able to properly translate those posts?

    • Royster

How do you know where the images came from and what camera took them.Where wouldhe get a D800 from to take them More likely a cheap P&S

  • http://StevenGeorges.com Steven Georges

Okay, you D800 guy’s can be smug now.
I have an eye=fi card on my card wallet that won’t work in the D4 I have on order.

  • http://www.thejordancollective.com CaryTheLabelGuy [NR]

I’m most surprised by the D800′s noise profile. There is practically no chromatic noise and the luminance noise is very very fine. Due to the massive amount of detail present in the files, noise reduction can be used without any real loss of detail. Topaz DeNoise easily melts the luminance noise away because there is sooooo much detail present. To anybody that doesn’t see the significance with this fact can’t be helped. I actually prefer these files over my D3s in some ways! I can’t believe I’m saying that.

    • Rob

Link 1, second page had resizes and I couldn’t tell the difference until ISO3200. Might just be my untrained eye.

However, my impression is that unlike the D700, ISO12800 looks totally usable at web sizes, and without too much sacrifice to vibrance and detail. I’m curious to see how it will play out in real-world low-light use. And how much of a beast the files will be to handle…

What about these images do you like more than the D3s?

      • http://www.thejordancollective.com CaryTheLabelGuy [NR]

The massive amount of detail in the D800 shots. This is due to its 36mp. Because the D800 has so much detail in it’s files, it makes noise reduction much easier because you can retain that detail after NR.

      • http://www.robertash.com Robert Ash

It likely gets even better, actually. Note that the links are 100% sized. The D800 has 3x the pixels of the D3 or D3s or D700. So its 100% size is also bigger. If you shrink the D800 image’s subjects down to the same size the D3 family’s 100% crop would be sized, then all the luminance noise grains would be even smaller. Looks amazing.

  • T.I.M

April 12th, I may be dead by then (seriously).

    • http://www.thejordancollective.com CaryTheLabelGuy [NR]

      Wait! You can’t be serious!

      • T.I.M

Yep, if you know someone that would agree to sell me a life insurance, I’ll buy it right away !

        • http://www.thejordancollective.com CaryTheLabelGuy [NR]

Wow. Is there anything I can do to help? Remember, I live in your city. I’m saddened by this news, I hope you’re joking, like you always do!

        • http://www.robertash.com Robert Ash

Me too, you’re a pretty good guy and you add a lot of life to the forum.

          • Mike

Hope you feel ok my friend – whatever your sorrow might be.

But if you’re looking for a passionate home for your gear after you’re gone, feel free to reach out to me :)

            Mike.

        • Doug

Come to the UK ill sort you out with free medical care: NHS

          • T.I.M

            @Doug

            Thank you all,
Unfortunately there is no much I can do, we already spent half million dollars in doctors/hospital bills (thanks God we have a good insurance)

I’m “OK” but I have about 9 times more “chances” to die by accident compared to a “normal” person.

The bad thing is that I can’t get a job, so I stay home selling my Test Carts on Ebay and enjoying NR.

The GOOD thing is that I have plenty time to enjoy my wife and my 3 daugthers.

            • http://thejordancollective.com CaryTheLabelGuy [NR]

Well, my good friend – fret not. If you’re not “dying”, you’re living. Keep enjoying the things you love and don’t worry about having an accident, just be as careful as you can. I knew you were susceptible to seizures, as you’ve mentioned this before.

God bless you and your family. If there is anything I can do, let me know!

    • Andrew

That is what happens when you keep a leopard (i mean cat) in your home!

  • george

It’s not clear to me if the shipping dates mentioned refer to the dates when the cameras are shipped from Japan to dealers around the world or the dates when the cameras are shipped from the dealers to the final buyers.

    • Cchi

The poster from Yodobashi in this post says, “we will ship the camera to you, so that it arrives on your doorstep on 22nd March. Which means that they will have it before that, at least in Japan.

      • george

thank you, Cchi. I hope that’s also the case in the US.

  • Cchi

I live in Japan, and placed a pre-order with Yodobashi Camera on the 7th Feb. But, their price is far higher than Amazon.co.jp (10%) and the Japan prices in general are far higher than in the USA… I know that is how the “global economy” works, but it is annoying…

Yodobashi offers 10% back in points, which effectively brings their prices down to the same as Amazon.co.jp, but why not just pay less in the first place…?

    • lorenzino

It is also true that Yodobashi is a phisical place where you can go and complain in person, just in case. I tend to use all the 10% “points”, as I have a lot of stuff to buy, so for me this is like a -10% on the basic price…

    • WoutK89

Why not to give the discount:

with people having points, they will have to return and do business at your store to use the points earned. If they gave the discount it is probably just a one time deal.

    • T.I.M

      @Cchi
If it can make you make feel better, when I started photography 25 years ago (in France), the V.A.T or T.V.A was 33% ! on top of a already high retail price.
I was crossing the border to buy my photo gear in Belgium where the taxes was “only” 25%
      :o

  • bubonic chronic

amazon.com still doesn’t offer a ship date for their D800 preorders. meh.

    • http://www.jodymillerphoto.com Jody Miller

I just got a notice from Amazon that my order will ship in JANUARY of 2013! Wonder why.

      • Ron Carroll

I just got the same notice from Amazon, saying the expected delivery date is January 4-8, 2013. I ordered it February 6; they got that part right.

This has shades of the D7000 debacle by Amazon. I ordered one on the day it was announced, only to have Amazon later cancel it, along with a lot of other people’s orders. So this time I wrote to ask about their cancellation policy, and they responded saying the order would not be cancelled. But it’s starting to feel like deja vu all over again…

        • martin z

Just got the same email from Amazon:

We now have delivery date(s) for the order you placed on February 07, 2012 :

“Nikon D800 36.3 MP CMOS FX-Format Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)”
Estimated arrival date: January 02, 2013

At the same time BH is showing already the release date of March 22nd.

Have others received such an email from Amazon?

I just got an e-mail from Amazon; I ordered maybe 10 minutes after the link was posted here. “Estimated Delivery Date: January 4, 2013 – January 8, 2013″ WTF??? !!!

    • Rob

Just got the exact same thing myself.

    • Twoomy

I got this as well. Obviously somebody at Amazon is SMOKING CRACK. It’s a fair bet we’ll get our cameras sooner.

      • BartyL

Excellent. How do I apply for a job at Amazon?

  • David

    • http://nikonrumors.com/ [NR] admin

Guys, don’t give your real Amazon order numbers online – I am going and manually removing them. You are welcome.

  • RajP

Amazon US just updated my order to show a shipping date of Dec 31, 2012 and an arrival date of Jan 4 – 8, 2013! Hopefully just a placeholder date.

  • WTF!

Amazon just sent my update shipping date, and it says JANUARY 2 2013!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

WTF!!!!!!! I ordered this after like 10min the preorder begin…. I wonder if this is a mistake…
    Hopefully it is!!!!!!!

Any other AMAZON pre order people here?

  • Matt

  • StrokesOfDigital

Yea, same here….. Preordered minutes after announcement and just saw my d800 will come in next year….. I sure hope it’s an error lol

  • http://www.seidphotography.com CS

I just got the same e-mail from Amazon!! WTF!!
Maybe they are just trying to lower our expectations for the arrival date?!

  • deliveryshock

jan 2, 2013 for me. so i’ve still got some time to use my D700 then. booh.

  • http://www.modelmayhem.com/richfehrman Rich

I just received an estimated delivery date from Amazon for my D800E, They are saying between January 4, 2013 – January 8, 2013.

  • Shasta_D

Just got this order update email from Amazon. I pre-ordered about 30 mins after the first order link was posted.

“Nikon D800 36.3 MP CMOS FX-Format Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)”
    Estimated arrival date: January 04, 2013 – January 08, 2013

  • ku

Same here. Got the delivery estimate January 04, 2013 – January 08, 2013
I placed the order in a minute they started pre-order. I hope it’s a mistake.

  • Yakka

I just received this Order update from Amazon:

    Hello,

We now have delivery date(s) for the order you placed on February 06, 2012 (Order# 103-3041101-5993039):

“Nikon D800 36.3 MP CMOS FX-Format Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)”
Estimated arrival date: January 02, 2013

    WTF?

    • Yakka

Oh, I see others got it too.

Peter/Admin, can you delete the order number from my post? I didn’t mean to include it. Or just delete my post.

      Thanks

      • Rob

I wonder if I delete your order mine will move up to 2012?

        :)

    • LazyUncleTony

My order number starts with 002. I wonder if the order number means anything.

  • Cchi

My order on Amazon.co.jp is fixed for a delivery date of 23rd Mar 2012. So, there is no way it would be 2013 in other countries.

  • Yakka

Also, take it easy, guys. It’s obviously a mistake. Seriously, stop freaking out.

    • Ron Carroll

Sure it’s a glitch, just like the glitch that led to them cancelling a lot of orders soon after the D7000 was released. Here we go again.

      • Yakka

You’re absolutely right. I didn’t think of that. I just called Amazon and they are looking into it. They did say that normally if something was not released for almost a year, the order would be canceled…that didn’t make me feel very good.

I knew I should have ordered from B&H.

        • Yakka

          Here’s Amazon’s follow-up email to me:

          “Hello,

I have done some further research and informed my lead of the situation.

As it stands we are unable to do anything about this issue at the moment.

The main problem is that the item is in such a high demand and we received so many pre-orders, we wont be able to fulfill every order by the original estimated date. In order to combat this, Amazon changed the estimated date to 2 January 2013, this still remaining an ‘estimate’ means that you will receive the item as soon as it becomes available for your order.

You will be notified by email once the order has been shipped.

The order will be canceled, however, if there is an excessive price increase and you will be notified about this as well, this is done for your protection.

I do thank you for your concern and we at Amazon appreciate that you took the time to contact us regarding this possible Public Relations threat.

We hope to see you again soon.”

          • WoutK89

if there is an excessive price increase

Say what? Price increase on the SRP?

    • http://www.seanmolin.com Sean Molin

      +2,000

  • David

Lets all hope it is a glitch in amazon’s system. Someone should contact them. Just in case, I just pre-ordered from B&H as well. I am also looking at Bestbuy’s site, because they sometimes get these cameras early as a big buyer (remember what happened to D7000 sales when Bestbuy sold them ahead of the time they were allowed to?)

    David

  • AXV

Is this a prank from amazon? Just recieved the Email..

We now have delivery date(s) for the order you placed on February 06, 2012 :

“Nikon D800 36.3 MP CMOS FX-Format Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)”
    Estimated arrival date: January 04, 2013 – January 08, 2013

    • juicebox81

interesting that your estimated arrival date is jan 04-08.

mine is jan 2nd. when did you place your order?

      • thebiter

I just got an email from Amazon as well for my D800E:
        “Estimated arrival date: January 08, 2013 – January 11, 2013″

I called their help line and the girl didn’t have any information, just that if it ships earlier or they get the product from the vendor earlier, I will get an email notification.

She said the website should have the latest information. I kept asking her if she could look into it further, but she refused.

At least… I got free 1 day shipping now. Not that it would actually matter if I got the camera a few days earlier than January 2013 =P

      • AXV

I ordered on the 6th but waited until late at night…

“We now have delivery date(s) for the order you placed on February 06, 2012″

  • Dean

I think we all got the same. I ordered within 15 minutes of the page being available and also got….

“Nikon D800 36.3 MP CMOS FX-Format Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)”
    Estimated arrival date: January 08, 2013 – January 11, 2013

    • Dean

I ordered the D800E from B&H. Wonder what they’ll say.

      • AXV

At least amazon didn’t charge us for it (unlike b&h)

        • Stephen White

B&H won’t charge until the order ships. I think you’re confusing this with someone complaining that B&H check the payment authorization by momentarily running the full charge through someone’s credit card. However as far as I can tell, even this wasn’t done with my D800E preorder.

          • AXV

There were a lot of comments of people being charged upon preordering their D800/e

            • Rob

NO ONE was charged for preordering from BH. That is illegal in the US (charging before shipping). Their credit card was authorized for the amount. There is a HUGE difference.

            • Mike Lowery

I pre ordered from b&h with PayPal. My card has been charged in full. It has already appeared in my recent transactions. I also had my order complete within 5 min of the 800/e page being posted. I’m hoping that my pre pay gives me first priority? Maybe not.

            • thebiter

If you’re international, BH charges you immediately.

            • Rob

I guess I left out the “in the US” in the first first sentence (but did mention it in the 2nd sentence). I guess international orders get screwed. That stinks :(

  • Jeff

Just got my delivery estimate from Amazon.com: US shipping to the US. Order placed 2/7 @ 1:45 AM Eastern. Estimated arrival date: January 04, 2013 – January 08, 2013.

Holy Toledo! I’m sure it’s subject to revision but, still, wow!

    • LazyUncleTony

I ordered a minute before you did; got the same dates.

      • whatwhatwhat

how do you find out the exact time that you ordered? my invoice just says the date, not the time…

  • AXV

lol amazon is pranking us, I got it too!!!

“Nikon D800 36.3 MP CMOS FX-Format Digital SLR Camera (Body Only)”
    Estimated arrival date: January 04, 2013 – January 08, 2013

    • YC

Haha… Ha.. Now that we all got punk’d pls tell us its not true : (

  • YC

I got the email from amazon too. Wow this better be a mistake

  • Dean

I’m guessing that we’ll all get follow up emails with April as the month.

  • MV

Just got a notification from Amazon specified delivery estimate as Tuesday January 8, 2013 – Friday January 11, 2013. That’s got to be wrong! I was one of the first people to pre-order on Amazon when the camera was announced.

  • Greg

This is why the supply chain is fubar. I got the same email from Amazon and immediately pre-ordered from two other places as a backstop. I’m guessing I’m not the only one.

None of these places really know how many units they’re going to sell by the time this settles out.

  • juicebox81

maybe this is Nikon’s way of punishing amazon for releasing all of those D4s feb 17th!!!!

WHY MUST WE SUFFER FOR AMAZON.COM’S MISTAKE!??!?!

    • AXV

Let’s just hope amazon is playing dumb and then shipping our cameras on the last days of february ;)

  • WTF!

I am FREAKING OUT AND PANICKING!

I hope amazon will give me a health insurance along with my D800! lol

And i ordered mine at 9:36PM!

  • http://Www.markfiddian.com Marklf

I just checked on the sex website where I have ordered a D800 in the UK and it says due March 22nd.

    • http://Www.markfiddian.com Marklf

Oops that’s Wex website ha ha ha

      • WTF!

I wanna watch porn… Nikon porn that is! lol

  • http://www.flickr.com/__max Max

Haha, yeah I got the email from amazon as well saying that my estimated delivery date is January 4, 2013 to January 8, 2013. I’m pretty sure it’s not final and it will keep changing as the release date comes closer (hopefully March 22nd). I wouldn’t worry too much about it right now. I also pre-ordered within an hour of pre-orders opening up.

Yep, just got the same e-mail from Amazon. January 3, 2013. And I ordered mine by with one click after refreshing the page and seeing it was ready for pre-order. It couldn’t have been more than a couple seconds after they put it up.

I ordered both the D800 and D800E from Amazon, and got the same expected delivery date range for both. Since they’re coming out at different times in different quantities, it would obviously be HIGHLY unlikely they would ship at the same time.

The dates appear to be based on shipping the 1st business day of next year, and the range each person got differs based on your shipment method and distance from an Amazon hub. It is probably customary for Amazon to just date pre-orders with unknown shipping dates as shipping next year.

don’t attempt to infuse this hysteria with your logic, mr. logical.

but seriously, that makes sense. i have one-day shipping, and my delivery is set for jan 2. one day after the first day of the year.

i’m sure this is a just a glitch/placeholder, but still – doesn’t bring us any closer to knowing when to expect our new cameras.

Have you ever ordered from amazon? This estimate date is random. This happened to me before.

    • AXV

I think it’s a mistake, probably reseted the date, and got this by default.
Even so, I would put my D800′s money on it, I bet it’s a mistake.

I’ll be enjoying my brand new 5D3 while yall still be waiting for the d800 next year. By that time, d800 will be old tech anyway :D

    • kill canon troll

The 5D3 is already old tech even b4 its released fool.

You will be crying like a baby with ur low res canon with dodgy plastics and it will crack like an egg when you compete for shots with a D800/E.

Not to mentioned how ugly the 5D looks and will make you look. Ha ha!!!

Amazon just updated my D800 order: jan4-13 2012! I place the Order on Feb 7 th

    • Michael

I’m extremely angry, I placed my order within 15 minutes of the posting here on Amazon Feb 6th at 12:15am. It’s incredibly disrespectful to me.

  • Rex

    Order placed: 10:24pm PST
    Amazon estimate: Jan 4, 2013

I chatted with CSR and she said the estimate was accurate.
I complained that Amazon should not accept orders they knowingly could not fulfill in a timely manner.
The response I got was, “I’m sorry, but you can cancel your order.”

LOL Feels like the D3 and D700 all over again

I don’t think I will be ordering one from Amazon UK as I live in the US.

I just received a follow-up email from Amazon:

    Hello,

    • Rex

I received a similar follow up which leads me to believe it’s just a placeholder date. Once they actually receive their shipment, they will update the estimate.

…which is still not very helpful. They are causing quite a stir – they should send a mass email to all those who preordered with an appropriate explanation.

So, shopping at Best Buy when they get their drop shipments is looking good?
