Where did you come up with that number? The persistent rumored spec is 36MP – can you site a source??

      d800 will be 16.2 million pixel, not 16.3 or 36 or 24
with a crop near 8 mp, no binning

That’s interesting, but where are you getting those numbers?? It would help if you could share some sort of source. Otherwise, how are we to believe you aren’t just making this stuff up??

Business publications report CES is losing its importance.

    • Posted January 11, 2012 at 9:55 am | Permalink

I think that’s true for tradeshows in general. My dayjob is in Marketing and it’s been a trend for the last several years… fewer attendees, rising costs… it’s just an old model, and it’s very difficult to track results.

dear admin. can’t you consolidate your coverage onto this page? I am sure that I am not the only one who would prefer not to have to track through 4 to different social media portals for your info. that is a bit of a jenky way to do things. you are a blog, after all. if nothing else, incorporate your feeds into this page.

I hardly have any Internet access, even the paid wifi in the hotel is sh*t. I do not have a press pass and no access to all the facilities.

I am at the show as well. I asked about the D800, but everybody I spoke with at Nikon was very tight-lipped. I did play with the D4. The D4 is a very nice camera and quite light which was surprising. I also saw Doug Gordon and Joe McNally.

A heads up for those in the UK thinking of buying a new D3s…be quick !
The D3s in the UK has come down in price very slightly, it’s £1400 cheaper than the pre-order price of the D4, but stock seems to be running out fast ?
I suspect some people who were waiting to see what the D4 would bring, and it’s cost, have decided the D3s is a better option for them…a few pro dealers are down to their last couple of bodies.

D800… bundled with a new compact walkabout lens please. 28-105mm f/4.5-5.6 VR. Compact & tack sharp @ f/8 from center to corners at all focals on D800.

Not dreaming, it’s possible if Nikon wants. I’m ready shell out $1500 for such a lens and $3500 for the D800.

Imaging resource conducted a live Q&A with Steve Heiner, Senior Technical Manager at Nikon Inc., live from CES yesterday, here are some of the more interesting questions and answers…
    Q. Is there any improvement over the D3s in terms of ISO in the range of 3200-12800?
    A. I can’t tell you quantitatively that it’s better by a given amount, but based on what I’ve seen from a pre-production camera it’s every bit as good as what we’ve seen from our D3S camera, and possibly even better. The processing in this camera is the most sophisticated we’ve had in a camera to date. Based on the input from the photographers who shot our brochure, they were really impressed with all aspects of the camera, including shooting in low light at high ISO.
    Q. Why is the new D4 battery rated to so few shots compared to D3, D3s, D700, etc ?
    A. On the battery, I don’t know the specifics, but do know that regulations in Japan have changed, so the maximum amount of energy that can be stored in a camera battery is less than was once allowed. The D4 is very energy-efficient, though. My own experience is that the D4 performs really well in battery efficiency; I haven’t felt at all limited by it.

I cannot fathom that restriction at all. So are they going to lower the capacity of laptops, tablets, and cell phones next? No rechargeable AA batteries at over say 2000mah? Really dumb law if it is.

I suspect the claimed rating of the D4 battery is maybe 80% of the stated capacity too. Rarely are they ever at the stated capacity on the label. Some Chinese made AA batteries that claim 30000mah are maybe 2300 on a good day – if they ever had one!

I’m still waiting to hear how long the D4 will record in full HD on its battery. They seem very mum on that. If it’s 15 minutes due to a small battery, what’s the point?

B&H Info shows the D4 Full H’D video at 30 or 24fps in H.264/MPEG-4 AVC combined with B-frame data compression for clips up to 29min. 59 sec. in length
