I don’t know why you think it will be a D900. Especially considering that the number 9 is unlucky in Japan and 8 is a lucky number (according to them).

Could well be the same sensor in the A77 and D400.

        Hi AnoNemo,
A few places are reporting that Sony will be making a number of announcements on the 24th now…inc the A77 with 24mp sensor.
My best guess at the moment is it’s the same sensor you’ll see in the D400 next year, I also think the D4 and D800 will have 18mp sensors.

Hi Landscape Photo, Thom’s a cool guy and his blog is always worth reading…what he’s saying is pretty much what Peter/admin has been posting here too…confusion after the earthquake.
He even wrote “my predictions have wobbled back and forth across the highway like a drunken driver. Let’s hope I don’t crash.”
I don’t know what’s going on anymore lol…the information I had was looking good before the earthquake, after the events in Japan it went out the window and now seems to be plausible again?
I have symapthy for those not knowing whether to buy a camera now or wait…I’m glad I’m not in that group and can sit back and watch the show.

What the hell is an NPS Pro?
Thom is stating that the D4 will be available for delivery at the end of the year to NPS Pros.
Does that mean that us ordinary pond scum types wont be able to receive one?

NPS Pro = Nikon Professional Sevices registered Professional. And yes that means that chances of getting one if you are not a registered NPS Pro is gonna be slim to none.

Find an NPS Pro that isn’t planning on updating their gear…

Yes, I agree either Nikon plug the holes where information were leaking or we will not see any dslr in August.

I am afraid the later is the case as recenty NR Admin posted the interviews with the Nikon execs they all talked about “new generation products are almost completed”. For me it does sound like we have nothing.

Besides look at the posts from NR Admin on the site. The clealry indicate that he has not received any info.

          Posted August 2, 2011 at 6:57 am | Permalink

“Almost completed” is good, completion needs to include D4, D800 and D400, since the present models are all at least 3 years old (s updates are just minor ones or innards, like the D3s’ sensor, no body changes).

So, yes, at least 2 now.

Here’s something interesting, there’s next to no D700 stock in the UK…those who do have stock have one that’s usually the display model.
The price has also rocketed…this is exactly what happened when the D3s came out, the D3 became difficult to find but it’s price went up not down.
Everything’s pointing towards a D800 announcement in August, long waiting times for orders and many complaints on this blog and others lol.

      • Landscape Photo
        Posted August 1, 2011 at 11:52 am | Permalink

I agree D800 is better, but what’s wrong with a DX D400 (along with D800) to follow D7000, in the form factor of D300 ?

It will be welcome by a group of photographers as long as it does not have a hampering-high resolution (lens limitation, diffraction & IQ issues) for that format. I thing 16 to 2o mp (max) would be appreciated. Yes, D7000 has a incredible IQ for DX, but its ergonomics & build quality is not on par with what offered by D300(s).

I’d prefer a D800 because FX has a room for expansion in future unlike the already saturated DX, but won’t it be nice to see a D400 too?

      Hi Hansel Adams,
Think back to the D7000, that wasn’t a camera people were waiting for, it was announced in September and people were still waiting for their orders in late January. I expect the D4 and D800 (if they’re announced) availability to be even worse…hopefully they haven’t rushed the move to Malaysia and there aren’t any quality issues, plus I can’t be arsed with post after post of complaints lol.

          Hi The invisible man,
I’ve been trying to get information about Tochigi, where Nikon make their high end lenses, but there’s nothing out there…the Tochigi Japanese site in the past had work monthly schedules I could translate but even those haven’t been updated since June ?
As I asked before, if you went to a shop to buy a 85mm F1.4 AFS, one made in Japan and the other in Malaysia, which one are you going to ask for ?…rightly or wrongly you’re going to want the Japanese one.
I can’t get any solid info on what’s happening with their lens production or which lenses they’re going to make in Malaysia.

Here’s some odd news about Notion VTEC, the company Nikon was apparently using for FX mount production because Sendai was out of comission. I don’t know if Nikon moved all it’s Sendai production and staff to this place or a new plant all together ?
“PETALING JAYA: Notion VTEC Bhd has been informed by its controlling shareholders that the negotiations with various parties are still on-going.
The company told Bursa Malaysia yesterday that it would make the necessary announcement should there be any matter that required an immediate disclosure.
Notion announced in April that it had been approached by a major US-based private equity firm for shares in the group from the controlling shareholders and Nikon Corp, Japan’s leading camera manufacturer.”

I’ve made a search through B&H website for D800 & the answer was as below in a yellow box:
    ———————————————————–
    “We’re sorry!

Nikon has not anounced a D800 model.

Please check out other available Nikon DSLR’s.”
    ———————————————————–

The only inquiries that you may get that type of result is Nikon Nikon D4, D800, Nikon D900 & Nikon D400. For anything else, you’ll get like that one instead:
    ———————————————————–
We’re sorry. No items were found matching your search request for”Nikon D700x”.
    ———————————————————–

Does it indicate that as a major dealer, they may know what models coming soon, or is it just that being aware of many recent customer inquires concentrated on these names, they simply put this info for kindness?

Yes, D700x & D700s too are included in the “yellow box type” reply. But anything else would give their standard result of “no items were found…” Try e.g. D600 or D6000 (something not really rumored) and see.

Finally a compact walkabout VR zoom for FX, or shall I be dreaming forever?

The sensor on the SLR drawing looks like an FX, and the design is quite compact. Maybe a 28-135mm f/3.5-5.6 VR that will bundled with D800… Something to stay on camera for times a heavy special-purpose lens is not necessary. The 28-300mm VR is a bit bulky to fit this definition.

I know people will oppose me saying why I should have an FX if I need a walkabout lens, and suggest a DX. But unlike other genres, landscape photography doesn’t necessarily address an f/1.4 gem to get successful results; anyway apertures like f/11 are mostly used. Why pay more? Why lug unnecessary weight?
