Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24mm f/1.4G ED lens now in stock

Update#2: the lens was in stock - a reader was able to order one and the status of his order is "Ready to ship":

nikon 24mm 1.4 lens in stock Nikon AF S Nikkor 24mm f/1.4G ED lens now in stock

Update#1: this lasted like 15 minutes, the lens is now again listed as new.

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 24mm f/1.4G ED lens now in stock at B&H.

This lesn was suppose to be released by the end of March but shipments were probably delayed because of Nikon's inventory count.

Here are some samples by Xavier Lhospice:

And some feedback from Xavier Lhospice after the break:

Pros of the 24/1.4

  • Pictures quality due to the Nano coating (as good as the pro-zoom with the same coating)
  • Total silence of the autofocus and AFS
  • The minimum focus of 0.8 feet (or 25 cm)
  • With shallow depth of field, fun to play with
  • Heavy enough to make the ratio camera/lense well balanced
  • 77cm diameter filter, becoming a standard for pro, so bunch of filters available
  • Good price if compared to the Leica (half price about!) with a quality that is close

Cons of the 24/1.4

  • The weight can be exhausting if added to a complete camera gear, but not by itself
  • Of course the price compared to Canon (plus 800€ approx.)
  • Gets these nasty greenish flares due to nano coating but in very strong frontal light situation

          What’s better with a D400 compared to a D300s?
Still the same small DX sensor, small view finder, noise over ISO 800, 24mm f/1.4 ($2000) transformed in a 35mm f/2 ($250).
I understand people seeking for a D900/D700x for the extra pixels, the D700 is perfect, I don’t see any improvment (I don’t do video) beside more pixels.
As I said before, if Nikon give me a D700 with 18mp minimum, it will be my last DSLR.

I hope the new D700 happens, invisible man. It is the only feasible way for me to own the old D700 at a price I can afford.

      @[NR],

I am on the BH notification list for this lens. I have not been notified about this lens becoming available. I bet it may have been a glitch in there system, or they may have actually had a few come in stock; but they could very well be reservered for special photographers who order and pay in advance, think newspapers etc. Either way, I will take the wait and see approach on this lens. Who knows, maybe a used 28mm f/1.4 will gain some of its value again, after a real hands on report make it in the forums from regular users.

Dr SCSI, I am on the notification list too and did not get a notification – they probably got only few pieces

ah i want it, 24 1.4 sounds like a perfect dx lens for now giving a beautiful 35mm equiv (well 36) and great when i upgrade to fx but i just splurged on the 85 1.4 so no more spending for a good long time. :(

      Posted April 12, 2010 at 3:16 pm | Permalink

@ArtTwisted, congradulations on your 85mm f/1.4, that is one I am looking at too. How do you like it? Close focusing distance? Reproduction Ratio? AF Focusing speed? Does it hunt when focusing? Bohke? On a DX camera, that is like having 127mm, a great focal length. I have the 135mm f/2 and I absolutely love that lens on both my D3 and D300. I have heard a new 85mm f/1.4 G was in the works, did that influence you any? Thanks in advance…

why people need 24mm f/1.4? Because canon has it? Nikon D3 has ability of higher ISO. Plus, this lens is over priced.

    @yuna

For me, I don’t need any more light either, I just want narrow DOF for subject isolation, and I do NOT want to eff around with PS to isolate my subject.

it’s cheaper to buy a copy of CS5 though.

      • Posted April 13, 2010 at 2:27 am | Permalink

Figure in the time (how much is your time worth?) for every single shot that you have to fuss w/ in CS5 and I think you’d find that, in the long run, the lens will serve you better. In 5 years, you can probably re-sell it for almost $2,000. What will CS5 be worth in 5 years? You’ll be lucky if you can give the CD/DVD away.

“Gets these nasty greenish flares due to nano coating but in very strong frontal light situation”

Does that mean, that the lens produces green ghosts in strong frontal light, even there is nano- coating ?

    Thanks

The 24mm 1.4 is on stock in Switzerland – got mine last week. The comments made about weight and flare are OK, but

1.) compared to the 14-24mm it is just light
2.) flare can be prevented … it’s up to the user

More importantly: colors a just beautiful – it’s not just the F=1.4 …

Aren’t Nikon DX-photogs still waiting for a fast
DX wideangle prime, say DX 17mm/F2.0?
Olympus even has a zoom that fast, the 14-35mm/F2,0 and
Pentax have at least their small 14mm/F2.8 lens -
I’m still missing an AF-alternative for my good old 24/2,0.
Going fullframe was never an option for me.
