New Nikon Coolpix cameras on February 2nd

I know many readers here do not care about Coolpix cameras. I expect that Nikon will deliver at least one unique and innovative point and shoot camera - maybe built-in GPS, email, etc. - they have filed multiple patents applications in this area.

The interesting part of this announcement will be the high end Coolpix segment. The Nikon Coolpix P6000 was introduced on August 6th, 2008 and is due for a replacement. Will Nikon replace it with a P7000 or with the new Nikon EVIL system? I am expecting more details soon.

I hope Nikon produces a Coolpix something like the Panasonic LX3 but with a good EVF and “only” about 6 megapixels.

Why settle for something close to Panasonic LX3? I used to own an LX3 but sold this and now have a Canon S90. The S90 is a better version of the genre started by the LX3.
Nikon should aim to better the Canon S90.

Canon makes better point and shoots. They need to just focus on getting my 135mm DC ready for release instead. :)

Nikon’s best selling cameras are COOLPIXes. I hope Nikon releases an EVIL (Electronic VIewfinder Interchangeable Lens) camera. I wouldn’t mind if they call it a COOLPIX. Remember the COOLPIX 4500? They need another great spec and popular compact to revitalize the COOLPIX line.

    EVIL, EVIL, EVIL!!
C’mon, hurry up with the announcement so I can make a decision on m4/3, ricoh, fuji(hopefully) or nikon.

I’d certainly care about the CP line if there was a larger sensor CP in a pocketable form factor (think Canon S90 sizing) w/RAW and HD movie and good AF. In other words, a take everywhere wonder.

Of course we care about P&S. There are times when it’s just not practical to carry an SLR around all the time. Unfortunately, the coolpix line is out of control. Way too many cameras, with way too many choices, and a lot of them are “just OK”. My 5 year old coolpix is starting to go, and I’m thinking the new Lumix is better than the coolpix’s that are out there. Guess we’ll see what Feb brings…
