Comments on: Nikon rebates (Part 2)

After reading the thread, it is obvious that rebates are pretty much non-existant in the US and Canada for professional equipment, except on discontinued models. and even then enjoy the year or two wait for anything signifigant in the way of a mark down. One thing that I can speak of personally is, its most important to have a great relationship with your Local Camera Shop. Only speaking for myself, I deal with one retailer locally here in Vancouver, and they are good to me.
Here are a few examples: All CDN dollars.
D300s retail $1999 cost $1799
D700 retail $2989 cost $2649
24-70 f/2.8 retail $2100 cost $1900
24-70 f/2.8 retail $2100 cost $1850
Now taking into account the US/CDN dollar difference, these are comparable to a point. There are better deals to be found I’m sure, if you don’t want your warranty in your own country. But it does seem to me that my average savings of 10% are better than most if any out there.
I have ordered my D3s and 70-200mm f/2.8 VRII, and I can say, at a great price point, and a nice discount from the shop.
I’m only speaking for myself, but the savings to date have contributed to alot of nice accessories, and its better than nothing from Nikon.

Is it all about spending extra money for brand name lenses ?
I just got my D700 few weeks ago (very nice camera, I just wish it had 16-18MP).
I have a Tamron 28-75 f/2.8, a Tokina 300mm/4 AT-X SLD, a Nikon 20mm f/2.8, and the Nikon micro 105mm f/2.8 VR.
My point is that you will find excellent lenses from Tamron, Tokina or Sigma and the money you save, you can put it on the camera.
The Tamron 28-75 f/2.8 is much better than a Nikon 28-80 f/4.5-5.6 VR that will cost more money.
And if having Tamron, Tokina or Sigma wrote on the lens bother you, just put a sticker on it !

Makes sense! Work your ass off to make a profit and then negate all the effort by giving it all away.

They don’t need rebates, people are still fighting for all those overpriced FX lenses…..

For entry level gear, the markups beyond their incremental costs are thin, so the small size of the rebates is no surprise.

As far as the pro gear, I suppose they figure pros will be making the decision more on features than on price. Or we can hope for a separate rebate program for that gear later on.

I’m bummed because I’ve been hoping a rebate will come up for the SB-600. Flashes seem to NEVER go on sale.

Stupid $12 trillion debt turning dollars into pesos…
