I take the 10 points back.

That being said you have some valid points, but I still think there are ways to make money that are less conspicuous and that don’t involve being a photo escort. “Spend 3 hours with me for $800″, well, reminds me of another type of job also involving rich mid-aged male customers . He’s lost some credibility to me because of that.

Hey Gary, what I meant is that Canon for example seems to have these rebate programs a lot more than Nikon does. At least here in Canada. It would be nice to have some sort of yearly rebate program, much like Canon does. A $100 here, $50 there is always better in my pocket than Nikon’s. As for Canon and Sony’s websites, yeah, Nikon’s (USA or Canada) is a hell of a lot better. If Sony ever decides to market their DSLR’s like they do the Playstation, or at least put in half the effort, things will get even more interesting in the DSLR world.

First of all, the original lens was bizarrely expensive so I’d expect nothing less than perfectness. Then comes along a new version. That’s allright, if it were the same price. But at 750 euros extra I’d not only expect less vignetting, I’d expect it to make me some coffee and carry my golfclubs too!

if condition are right, I can do that too with my 70-300 VR at 300mm handheld with a D80 attached. So I guess it is also a matter of technique.

BMW is smaller than Toyota and Honda, but manages to hold its own niche in the market. I think Nikon is similarly positioned with a prestigious reputation, and I really don’t believe that Nikon marketing is bad.

Nor do I see that Canon or Sony have great marketing when it comes to their dslr’s. Sure, Sony’s a beast in marketing in other areas such as TV’s and Playstations.

As an aside, I will say that if you compare the websites of Nikon and Sony regarding their dslrs, Nikon is far more impressive. Canon looks primitive by comparison.

With all due respect, those two do point us in the right direction on quite a few matters. Independent thought must move from there. But they do what the internet thing pretty well, and its helped me save money and go for the right product quite a few times, even if I don’t agree on all of what they say.

And there is nothing wrong with an $800 price tag or even billing at several hundred dollars per hour for any specialized skill. I think the problem is that he is applying this price across the spectrum without concern for skill sets.., as if “that is simply what (his) time is worth.” But the problem is that that’s not necessarily the value or what your time with him is worth, because its really hard to gauge exactly what aspects of photography Thom is an expert at that would be worth fees higher than most good lawyers.

Most likely such a meeting is for un-trained rich amateurs who have a particular problem or two they just cant seem to fix or understand. In that case, they may appreciate a one-on-one tutor. And if they can afford it, why not. No one said Thom was free to the public, the same as most private citizens who need to eat and live modestly comfortable are not. Most of us choose one, maybe two employers at most, and we pretty much expect wages we can live on comfortably. Its not that big of a deal what he is asking. Its simply not for you.

I’m also hoping for some rebates here in Canada ’cause I’m eyeballing Sony’s A850. The type of shooting I do fits that mold. One thing about Canon and Sony, they’re marketing beasts compared to Nikon. Yes, I get the fact that Nikon is smaller but good marketing will often sell swamp land to developers.
