What to expect from Nikon next week

UPDATE: Nikon Germany and Nikon Sweden websites are/were down today. The "Presse" link has some serious errors on nikon.de & nikon.se. Same on nikon-europe.com. Problems with the new press release(s)?

not exactly a D3s, but close enough (source: Nikon USA)

not exactly a D3s, but close enough (source: Nikon USA)

Nikon D3s should be a sure thing. This is a collection of the rumored Nikon D3s specs:

  • ISO 200-12800
  • New ISO range HI-3 at 102,400 ISO
  • 12.1 mp FX sensor (same as the D3, but tweaked)
  • D-movie with 24 fps/1080p
  • New 1.2x or 1.3x crop mode
  • 14fps

Nikon AF-S 24mm f/1.4 lens: there were some rumors on dpreview and Thom Hogan also thinks that this lens will be released next week (see his comment here). I have not received any reliable information yet but this doesn't mean it won't happen. Spring 2010 is when I expect this lens to be announced based on a previous tip.

Nikon AF-S 85mm lens: I strongly believe that this lens will be announced next week. Nikon have filed two patents: one for 85mm f/1.4 and another one for a Micro AF-S 85mm f/3.5 DX VR. It doesn't make sense to announce a DX lens with the D3s, but this is still a possibility.

Nikon AF-S 100-500mm f/4-5.6 IF-ED VR lens: this lens should be released first or second quarter of 2010. If announced next week, the availability will be few months from now.

Nikon AF-S Nikkor 16-35mm f/4G ED VR: this rumor came from a Japanese forum. I have no other info on this lens.

Nikon mirrorless camera with a DX sensor: this is the wild card. I received multiple tips on that camera (see here and here), but I am afraid that they may all be based on the initial report from C-Net. I hope I am wrong but by know we should know at least the model name, have some specs and a spy shot. We got nothing. This could be one of those cases where there is smoke without fire but there is still hope.

There is a very low chance that we will see all of the above mentioned lenses next week.

Sorry, there will be no D700x/D700s next week.

Let's don't forget that all those are just rumors - if you have a weak stomach, wait for nikon.com to get updated.

I will have another live blogging session on Tuesday evening (US Eastern time). Hopefully the server will be able to handle the traffic.

Anyone know of the status of the D700x? I would go ape-poopy for that camera.

    • http://nikonrumors.com/ [NR] admin

sorry, no D700s/D700x next week (I updated the post)

      • http://www.flickr.com/photos/themysteryman David

        :(

        • http://nikonrumors.com/ [NR] admin

          I hope I am wrong :)

    • Mike

if they are not coming out with D700x then I’m not going to buy anything from NIKON. Well they are dependent on Sonys chip, and right now SOny alpha 900 is the best deal on the market.

      What is Nikon doing?

  • Alex

    What about my D700xs ?

    • Jim

that’d be “excess” (xs) I’m afraid. Couldn’t resist.

  • Jim

Is it really going to be called D3s or might it possibly be called D3H? (I’ve heard no references to a camera with the D3H name, but 14 fps sounds more like a D3H than a D3s.)

    • mike

is going to name as D3m

  • A.

What would be the use/logic behind a 1.2 or 1.3 crop mode? Is it tied to a different aspect ratio? I seriously am baffled by this–any explanations?

    • Joe

      free zoom

      • WoutK89

No its not free zoom, just a change in field of view, you’ll lose the MP surrounding the 1.2 or 1.3 crop area! That’s why its crop and not teleconverter.

    • Connie

It is going to be 1.2 and another ratio – probably 4 x 5
      and video is 720

      • RT

What makes you think the video will be 720p?? The D3 can already output a 1080 signal from liveview

        • Connie

because 720 was the standard when they began developing this camera.

        • Flense Master

          1080i

      • soap

Does not the D3 already have 4×5? 4×5 is 1.2 crop.

    • DNHJR

The crop mode is probably how the camera can get 14fps. If I remember right, the D2x had a crop mode so it could get 8fps. Normally it had 5fps.

    • http://www.fotosoep.com Mike

      Canon users!

If its’ true, with the 24mm f/1.4, it will lure disgruntled 1Dsiii canon users to the Nikon fold. And it’ll please those converts already in possession of a Nikon.

An I guess it’ll increase the frame rate, maybe 15 or 16 fps, the buffer will fill up less quick, etc.

  • NikoDoby

So maybe it’s going to be just the D3S and one or two new lenses? Get ready for all the disappointment and complaints to come rolling into this place on Tuesday, or not.

    • http://nikonrumors.com/ [NR] admin

I am afraid you may be right, for the lenses and for the complaints

      • NikoDoby

Don’t worry admin, not matter what Nikon announces I’m still happy and I’ve got your back! :)

      • SBGrad

If we really get a 100-500 there will be no complaints from ME! Cost might cause me to flip out, though.

  • JC

An FX sensor with a 1.2x or 1.3x crop mode? Doesn’t make sense..

    • Astrophotographer

It could be tied to the patent application a while back for auto-leveling of tilted photos. If it has a crop mode this is can be done. No more crooked horizons.

      • Anon

Of course not… You don’t have to pre-crop to level the horizon…

    • Snicker

1.2x og 1.3x will be an additional crop mode to 1.5x and 5:4. Useful for 1D mkIII users

      • MB

        1.2x = 20mm x 30mm
        1.3x = 18mm x 27mm
Why do this on 12Mpix FX sensor?

  • Vendetta

We will only see the new Projector Camera from Nikon and the first in the world. Nothing else

  • sjms

16-35/4 VR talk about a waste of technology. of all the lenses that do not need VR this would be the one. at 16mm FF you would have little to no benefit. here is where Canon was thinking. the 24-105/4 at 14 really fairly redundent in use but as you move up the scale it becomes quite the usable product

    • Anonymous

I hate when VR is in place of a wider aperture….

I am certain we will see some FF primes…

      • rhodium

I sure hope we see some fast wide angle primes… Nikon is really losing out on this end.

  • Jack

Hey Admin, there aren’t too many rumors of a D700x type camera, are there? I wonder if that’s an indication that a camera of that type will not be here for quite some time.

    • Jack

I should clarify – I meant more solid rumors rather than simply the assumption that Nikon will eventually release a camera like that due to the D3X and what Nikon has done in the past.

  • NikoDoby

I don’t think there will be an S or X version of the D700. A total replacement seems more likely now in my opinion. A D800 within a years time maybe? :^(

    • WoutK89

With you on this one :-)

  • Clark

Question (I apologize if this has been already discussed)

On an asssumpsion that D3s is going to be released:
Is the D3 going to be discontinued right away after the D3s release?
Can we expect a price drop on the D3?

    • http://nikonrumors.com/ [NR] admin

I think yes, D3 will not be produced and if you can find it, the price should drop but not significantly. Just look what happened to the D300 after the D300s was announced.

  • Astrophotographer

ISO 12800! I did a little math on lux and photons. For daylight illumination (5500k) and 18% grey, you get this formula:

    photons/um^2 = ~60000/iso.

So for the D3′s 8.4 um pixel that’s 71 um^2. So 12800 iso equals about 330 photons per pixel – before the RGB filter. So at best an average of 110 photon / pixel being recorded for 18% grey. That’s a very efficient, low noise sensor. Or has Nikon come up with a way to capture all photons?

At minimum noise is the square root of signal so noise must be at least 10 photons or ~10%. Read and thermal noise will add more. And, my understanding is the top iso should produce at least 10:1 s/n at 18% grey. So has Nikon produced a near perfect sensor?

    • AstroAnswer

Don’t forget that many camera manufacturers, especially Japanese ones, lie as to the actual ISO. Check dxomark website for the exact details, but Nikon higher ISO’s are exaggerated by 30% or so, ie., ISO 1600 is actually ISO 1000.

    • soap

Thank you – I always appreciate your posts.

  • jon

16-35 4.0 VR, hmmm? maybe to be folowed by a 35-135 4.0 VR? That would be a good kit.

  • http://www.truphotos.com gnohz

Enjoy reading the rumours and posts. Keep them coming! :)

  • grumps

The lenses are a perfect announcement. As for the D3s, I’m not interested, and would have hoped like many for a D700x, which is unrealistic!
The D700x will undermine the release of the D3s and certainly make the D3x pretty redundant so soon! It may still come, it’s just too soon, at least not until Q2/Q3 next year and I would expect a D4 perhaps Q3/Q4 next… (never the times we would want!)

  • Ubiquitous

Regarding the 24mm f/1.4: I’ll believe it when I see it. I’ve been waiting of that lens so long that I gave up any hope.

    • grumps

      Yes a F/1.2 would be great, I’d be happy with a f2.8 :)

      • matt2001

Wait you mean a 24mm f/0.8? I have been waiting so long for 24mm f/1.4 as well! Maybe if we’re all optimistic it will just happen oh that would be so very nice… Okay yeah right nevermind you’re right, I’ll believe it when I see it :P

  • http://www.truphotos.com gnohz

Just wondering, are there any rumours of a D400 (or equivalent)? Most probably not, since the D300s was just released…but just hoping.

    • WoutK89

Ask again in 7 months time I assume

  • DERiK

I m tried of old same megapixel is 12 again. i was hope they Nikon Co. will give to us need new update 18 MP to up MP please! but not give. but yes of one nikon D3x but i like nikon D300 or 400 need update 18MP to UP MP. no no no 12 to 17 MP

12 to 15 MP, It was 3 year ago!

    • DNHJR

Why? So you can have more noise. The MP race is a gimick to sell more cameras. Only time you really maybe need anything over 12MP is if your doing billboard size stuff. Do you do that? You have been brain washed into thinking you need higher MP when you should be out taking pictures and stop worrying about higher MP.

      Have a great day.

      • grumps

I find it funny that people would buy into NOT having higher megapixels! This isn’t to say the math is incorrect, but the technology in photocells are improving whereby having more doesn’t introduce necessarily more noise, or the noise they expect to see.
How can I put this nicely, for those that 12MP is enough, that’s great, your cameras are already available and ARE great! (Are they not?)

It’s very similar to the analogy to computer CPUs saying the GHz race, and that it will cap out! Clearly not!
Well I’m just saying, 35mm cameras will certainly hit into 30MP and perhaps more too, but will come a point noise levels and picture IQ will please everyone (a lot of ppl) and as afoordable price point too! Of course there are early adopters, but aren’t a lot of the cars we’re driving today already racecars and affordable compared to 10-30 years ago! (sorry for the wait :p)
        ok- gentle MP rant over!

        • soap

“but the technology in photocells are improving whereby having more doesn’t introduce necessarily more noise, or the noise they expect to see.”
Any technology which enables more megapixels at a noise level of N also, by its very nature, also allows a noise level of <N at current megapixel levels.

What we have seen, though, is not greatly improved sensors – but more complex noise reduction software on board and slightly improved sensors.

The D700 is sharper than the 5DmkII @ 6400, despite having fewer pixels. What is the point of extra pixels if all they see is blur?

        • mike

Funny that you should mention processors, seeing as how long it’s been since I’ve seen a 4 GHz processor … Not since the P4′s, I think … Maybe non-Bayer sensors will be the same for camera sensors as multiple cores were for processors.

      • Derik

few week ago, I was done with homework! I was understand now. 12 MP and plus Nikon EXPEED Image Processing will help lowest noise and more sharp pics

Now my old Nikon D200, i was test with high ISO h 1.0 is noise equal NIKON D3s high ISO 12,800 or high ?

then I want to know all dude Nikon answer on comment to me.

        I’m DEAF person! smile.

  • zzddrr

yep. Nikon will clearly say to f…k off customer.

I’ll give you 12MP and if you don’t behave I will even throw more plastic crap at you. (D3000, 5000, etc.). Best, you can get jello but you went too far

  • Clemi

I will no longer bee lieve to any rumors. Thom Hogan is said to have announced that the new cameras would come before oct 15th, nothing has come yet. We all have read the so called Nikon-time-tables with a D700x to come on the 15th, now we hear a guy from Nikon-Germany say that the successor of the D700 will not come after (about) one more year .
On friday I have purchased a D300s with the 14-24mm and the 24-70mm now. I will cancel the Nikonrumors.com from my favorites and stay happy.

    • WoutK89

How sad you must have been to have bought those awful camera and lenses, I hope you will live

    • http://nikonrumors.com/ [NR] admin

      you will be missed

      • http://www.DominicKamp.de Macindows

Nikonrumors.com is still on the upper left corner of my Opera speed dial! What’s your name actually, admin? Can I call you admin? :-D

        • http://nikonrumors.com/ [NR] admin

          NR Admin :)

    • another anonymous

I think it’s very good purchase Clemi, I’m more than year happy user of D300 with 24-70 and 70-200 and want that 14-24 yet. Only for indoor i would be more happy with 24mm f1.4 but maybe once somehow somewhere any dreams come true ;)

  • C Benson

Well all I can say Canon won, Nikon lost. Just looking at the different cameras that Canon has, they are beating Nikon over the head with their technology. For example better sensor, better ISO and so on.

For those who think video is important, you are wrong. Just look at the entire Canon DSLR line on Dpreview.com and compare with Nikon. Do you see a difference? If you think video is going to be the norm, I’m sorry. Canon is beating Nikon every step of the away. I don’t understand NIkon logic when it comes to video. If Nikon wants to put video on their lower end DSLR cameras thats fine because I fell the lower end models, would benefit those who is just starting out in DSLR world . But leave the med. – to higher end DSLR’s alone so that the professional photographers could benefit better technology in the camera.

    • Hilarious

“For those who think video is important, you are wrong. ”
How can people be wrong, if that’s what they want? what a massively small minded individual you are

    • T140Rider

IMHO, Nikon has always been far more conservative than Canon. As has been said here, the D700 wipes the floow with the 5DII at high iso’s. This was proven a few weeks ago when taking non flash pictures in a church crypt. The higher resolution made for nowt in the final result.
I’ve owned a Nikon since I bought a Nikkormat FT3 in the late 70′s. Before that I had a Canon AE1 which crapped out on me in the Artic with a sticking shutter one month after I bought it. Canon refused to fix it under warranty.
I blew the shutter on my F801 which ws fixed no question under warranty.
Yes, this has clouded my view.
I own three Digital bodies. D2X, D200 & D700. I’ve see a distinct improvement in the quality of the images produced by each of them. All I want is that this continues. As with compters, Ghz isn’t everything (I write Operating System Software for a living). Megapixels is the same. All I ask is for is the quality of the end result.
Go off to Canon by all means. There are Canon people selling their kit and moving to Nikon.
It is human nature to whinge & complain so by all means carry on but please us Nikon fans alone. Most of are happy with what we use.

  • cenkog

Any news about dust protection system for D3s?

  • cenkog

Same MP, same “lack of dust protection system” etc… :(

  • 芽依

lets hope they bring primes , i’m about to retire my trusty 24mm f2.0

  • Robert Krasser

I would be quite disappointed if this D3s rumor is true! Why? I will try tell you in a few lines. The D3s will be a D3 plus video. No new functions – just the video. Video is nice, I have it in my D90 ít is fun but the true is that it is something for “holiday” . This movie function will not be enouh for professional photojaournalism. Why dont Nikon focuses on small interventions functions everybody would like to see.

Since years I am waiting for a proffessional Nikon camera for Photojournalists. I went to the “Visa” festival for Photojournalism every year. The festival is sponsored by Canon, and 80% of Photojournalists are using Canon. It is simly better for them.
    What I am waiting for:
eg. Nikon D3P (Photojournalists or Press)
    - Build in GPS (it is nice that nikon gave us GP-1 but the truth is that it is unconviniant
    - Build in WIFI (yes upload via W-lan and download)
    - full IPTC / EXIF (Metadata) editing in Camera or upload with Camera control, this is a thing Nikon can do with a software update, WHY dont they do it????
    – better waterproof,
    - I would take good things from Canon (wheel instad of whipe)
    - battery with solar panels.
    - I think 12mp is enough, of course 18mp will be better but not for additional 2000€
    Lenses:
    - 20mm, 24mm or 28mm 1.4 prime lens
    - 50mm 1.2 prime lens
I think Nikon has a lot of good and expensive telephoto lenses and zooms.

    Software:
any archiving software with search function full IPTC compatible.

So this are my wishes and I can fully understand you guys waiting desperatly for the new D3s but in my opinion this will be just another D3+video. No new inventions, cool functions, something panorama function.
So hoping for a revolution on 14th or 15th

    • STJ

No offence, but it seems you simply like Canon better. They have the lenses you want and the control wheel. Personally I do not like the Canon control wheel.

Also I see the D3 just as much as a sports camera where 14fps is a true upgrade. They also talk about an improved sensor – that might be more interesting than we think… With regards to build in GPS and Wifi I agree that should not be very difficult, not expensive.

      • Robert Krasser

the thing is that I dont like canon at all! canon do have much more disadvantages. the worst for me with Canon is that you have to swich the Camera on at the back. What a stupid thing! On the other hand why is Nikon all the time getting “non innovative” news. In Perpignan I was talking with a guy from Nikon Scandinavia. He told me that we schuld wait untill next year when there is the football WC in south africa nikon will announce a bunch of cameras and lenses before. But to tell you the truth “I am tired of waiting”. The nikon cameras are good the image quality perfect, but why why why they dont get the last pinch for the “state of the art” camera of the century.

        • Ray

whats wrong with nikon’s weather sealing? I never had any trouble with my d2x.

wait, whats wrong with the d3 for journalism?

          • Robert Krasser

actually nothing is wrong using a D3 in photojournalism. the weather sealing is fine but canons is better. just new inventions are missing which can be solved very very qiuck eg. the IPTC treatment in camera. most photograpers do not have time and access to nikon transfer in a foreign countrey. So it would be nice if you can edit/uploade the IPTC to the camera not just one or two copyright information to the camera. AND THE PHOTO IS ALREADY TAGED WHEN PRESSING THE RELEASE!
Another thing is the Wireless transmitter. Eye-fi cards are very tiny so it schould not be a problem to add it on a camera, same applys to GPS. Also: how long does it take to switch to B/W? ages! You cant make a shortcut. so there are a few big but a lot ot small things to impoove but Nikon dont hear us for ages. Adding sutch things to one camera and most Photojournalists will swich to Nikon. As I told befor nowadays most Photojounalists (80%) using Canon gear, and there is a reason whhy it is like that.

    • gold

You have some interesting issues with WiFi and IPTC. GPS built in would be very cool too. If you’re really intersted in GPS I’d point you to the Dawntech Pro Logger. Have you tried doing GPS with Canon? It’s the biggest PITA you can imagine. In this aspect Nikon with it’s 10 Pin Connector is like heaven!

      • Robert Krasser

Yes, I agree. I do have the GP-1 and it is working fine I persume the Dawntec is the same but less expensive. I am not complaining, just the future must be – build it into the Camera Nikon. I know Canon thing is unusable. But I am sure (I already heard the rumor) that there will be a new version of Canon 7D with build in GPS. So Canon will be on top again and Nikon is loosing mrket share. So the direction is clear but why dond they just do it? Same applies to WIFI

  • Lewis H

    We need a D700x (or D800) with a 24 mp FX sensor
We do not need any 12 mp FX sensor
We do not need any 1.2 or 1.3x crop mode
We do not need any D3s with the movie feature

  • Florian

    Nikon Germany website is down…

    • Alex

Same thing on Nikon’s moon website, I think the probes NASA sent on the moon last week as something to do with the D3s, maybe the dust free testing…..

      • Mikael

        They’re trying out the D3s sensor-cleaning function!

  • Vahid

and I wish to see this list next week:
    70-200 f4 VR
    24-120 f4 VR
    SB-700
    SB-850
    …….

    :D

  • Ray

I ordered a d700 the minute i heard “there will be no d700 replacement” because i know whatever d3/d3replacement comes out i cant afford :) best camera is the one you can get to shoot with :)

    • Alex

I agree with you, I will also get a D700 but I will wait 2-3 weeks, the price may go down to $2299.

      • Ray

i was going to wait, but here is how you do it for about $2300…

abes of maine, right now its 2439.00
        BING cash back 2.50% = 60 dollars back = 2379.00
        loyalty10 = $10 off any purchase promo code = 2329.00
free sandisk 8gb extremeIII cf card = 30 or 35 dollar value? so i essentially purchased my d700 at 2300.00

no tax free shipping coming monday :) woohoo.

        • Ray

          whoops made some mistakes
after loyalty 10 should be 2369, and sandisk value 30 do about 2339.00

  • NoName

Maybe they will announce a D90s. No facts to back this up but it would be nice if they could bump it up to reflect the slight advances from the D3000 & D5000.

    • WoutK89

      What advantage does a D3000 have over a D90?

      • soap

Don’t confuse the issue with facts!
        ;)

  • Mike

What is the best SLR on the market?

    1-Sony Alpha 900?
    2-Canon 700D
    3-Lumix
    4-Pentax
    5-Nikon D90

and the rest is just expensive shi*

what do you think? What is the best deal right now?

    • Ray

      ..canon 5d MKI.

    • Mikael

There’s no best deal on a camera at any time. It all depends on what your intended purpose is. Many would never utilize the features found in a D90 that the D40 doesn’t have. And since the D40 is a lot cheaper, it’s a much better deal.

Some need to crank it at 8FPS, then the D2h would be a lot cheaper than say a D700 w/MB-D10, but given the high-iso capabilities of the D700, it might still be a lot better deal than the D2h.

If anything, you’ll need to divide it into different categories.
      Best/best deal landscape camera
      Best/best deal photojournalist/sports camera
      Best/best deal family DSLR.
      Etc etc

  • WoutK89

Probably, they only do so, if they think the quality is good enough to be incorporated as a default choice, HI and LOW settings are only there, so you can choose yourself if the quality is decent enough for your style of Photography

One thing that continues to amaze me, generally, not just on this site, is that people keep saying “we” do/don’t need this or that feature or “we” know that to be any good a camera must have a “x” megapixel sensor or Nikon must produce this or that lens.. What they mean is that “I” think this or that and as “I” am always right, everybody must think the same. This is usually supported by some very dubious “facts”

To all such people, you will no doubt be surprised to be told that most of us don’t think the same as you. Your opinion is just that, it is not a fact, so could you please just express it as an opinion not as something handed down to a prophet on tablets of stone.

    • rhodium

Ah, but I think WE can agree that WE don’t need such people whining on this site :)

    • LEO

well, I would say people right now. compare stuff with other companies.
      Nikon-Sony-Kodak

If you do the same, you will get why people think what next Nikon should bring.

if Nikon doesn’t deliver to its expectations, next camera will be just OLD over priced cra*, and people will not buy it.

Right now. lenses are better investment.

      • Alex

You are right, I will use on the D700 lenses that are 20 years old, and they will make pictures as good as the new lenses.
You can get the same picture quality from a FM2 or a F100.
DSLR still have to improve the picture quality, but I think in 2-3 years they will all make perfect pictures, then you will be able to keep the same camera for 10 years or more.

Matching the dynamic range of the finest film, the noise (grain) of the finest film, and the colour reproduction abilities of the finest film MIGHT be achieved in the next 2-3 years (arguably we’re there with noise, close with dynamic range, but lagging in color gamut) but matching the dynamic range of the human eye – that will take quite a bit longer.

    • Ennan

      well said Chris P!

  • peter

    I’d really rather have a 24 or 28 f2 than a 1.4
It will cost half the price…

As for the 16-35 VR bring it on! the f4 will cost half a f2.8 version, and give you 3 stops of VR. I am reminded of a photo that a tour guide took for me in a cave in mexico. 18mm iso 1600 f3.5 1″ VR on. D40. even if I had a D700 and 2.8 zoom. that would give me 3 stops over the D40. 1/8″ handheld by a tour guide is asking an awful lot!
I certainly find VR to come in handy at shorter focal lengths

  • tchar

I have D700 and recently aquired a 28-200 3,5-5,6 G Nikon lens. I am very happy the way this kit works although i got the 24-70 and 70-200 professional nikon lenses. I think that nikon has to start producing a lens like the 28-200 with very good performance. I would have paid even 1300 to 1500 euros for a good lens in this range. DX format have great lenses in this range.

    • Bob Howland

I very much agree with you about the desirability of a high quality superzoom. I shoot Canon, who has their 28-300, but that lens is much too heavy for every day use. Plus it has a push-pull zoom action which I really dislike. A 28-200 f/2.8-4.5 IS/VR sounds about right.

  • Gary

    A few more observations:

    1) it’s amazing how many want an updated D700 w/ video; I hope Nikon is listening. The D700 is a fantastic camera, but judging from what many post, a lot of people want one w/ video.

    2) The wild card is whether another camera will be announced; rumors have been all over the place. If there is another unit released, like a rangefinder hybrid, then I will say that Nikon has done a great job in stopping any pre release rumors. They will definitely be able to surprise people.

Clarification: there is a very low chance that we will see all of the lenses mentioned in this post. Also the D3s specs is an “all in one” list of rumors, some of them may not be valid.

wow, some nasty errors on Nikon Germany website:

Since they have the two patents 85/1.4 & DX85/3.5S what keeps them from releasing a mix of the two, the AF-S 85mm/1.4? FX or DX? “To be, or not to be: that is the question”

Nobody has mentioned this that I’ve seen, but I’d be surprised if the new d3 version didn’t come with the buffer upgrade out of the box.

  • Josh

Who cares about the new lenses. Nikon hasn’t even managed to maintain stock of the AF-S 35mm 1.8f DX it released back in March!

Hi Admin, I don’t know if this helps, but from a quick look at the error page you posted. It seems that they updated their databases’ product information but didn’t fill out all fields properly (according to the error: “product name” was missing).

It’s likely that a new product was inserted into the database, but either inserted incorrectly, or maybe dropped the product name in the mistaken belief that the software would just not show it to the public.

thanks – it makes sense that they tried to add a new press release, it is working now

If that 16-35 is real, I’ll be first in line!

I’m just wishing for a 300mm f4.0 AF-S now with VR. it seems many of the high profile stores are OOS on the current version.

According to a very reliable source, this year there will be no Nikon D700s or Nikon D700x.
What Nikon plans to do is to launch totally new D800 to replace the existing D700.
There are several features available in Nikon D800:

    1) Video mode 1080p video recording (full HD)
    2) High resolution 24.5 MP.
    3) High frame rate: 7 fps without battery grip (similar to D300s)
    4) 51-area Nikon Multi-CAM 3500FX (same technology as D3X)

Basically Nikon D800 will compete head to head against Canon’s EOS 5D MkII.
Most likely Nikon will launch the brand new D800 before Christmas end of this year.
