Nikon also introduced video first; however, their video seems to have sat still while Canon added 24/25/30fps at 1080p & 50/60fps at 720p. I hope Nikon develops a camera that can compete with this, but the d300s makes me wonder if they're even capable...

Well, calm down.. we are only on the first anniversary of the first ever video enabled DSLR (the D90, released on 5 September 2008). It is way too soon to judge who will come out on top in this game. Two years ago Canon looked to be asleep at the wheel, we are just seeing their answer to the D300 and D3 now. The 7D looks great, but it is introducing technology Nikon has had for a while: colour metering, integrated wireless flash, high-quality AF tracking etc. And it comes two years after the D300.

Rob Galbraith:

“Static autofocus was excellent, using Spot AF, various AF points, AI Servo (we almost never use One Shot) and a small batch of different lenses. With the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II, EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS (also introduced today), EF 70-200mm f/4L IS, EF 200mm f/2L IS and EF 800mm f/5.6L IS, photos were simply in focus.”

Hey guys, I was talking about Canon's video mode, that Nikon sucks etc. But I have to say, for me Canon 7D is bullshit anyway because of it's crazy f****g megapixels. I studied it's full-size samples and this is lamentably. Canon goes to compact camera's quality with big DOF. :) So I want to whip as Nikon as Canon.

Yeah, the 7D must make Nikon at least a little bit nervous...

I hope Nikon releases something great in the not too distant future.

I'm amazed by the amount of people who still ask this question... If you're truly curious as to why this is being done, do a little research. Most video forums contain a DSLR section that will outline the advantages of shooting with a DSLR over a camcorder. My guess is that you don't actually care. My guess is that you've run out of things to complain about but lack a replacement hobby.

being completely unemotional, and a Nikon user for decades, i have to state that canon pushed nikon into a corner and nikon needs some big hits to get out of it. how are they intending to do this successfully without any skills in software development obviously lacking. i am wondering how nikon will meet the challenge - i am not the only one waiting for a d400, no need for a d300s video. Have a d90 and am currently happy, but would like to have a more rugged, weatherproof body with the possibility to shoot MF glass (Contax, Zeiss primes).

Yea cus you know nikon has great costumer service (rollseyes)... BTW TS Rob had a beta version while some of the new testers have a final production and state the af is just fine. Besides Ill think about this next time I shoot the d300 at 6fps at 12 bit and only get 2 keepers... all with 51 AF points ROFL.

Yes, just like your service center took care of the 1DmkIII's auto focus :)

Oh and your workers can't be happy when they spend the entire work day standing because canon won't let them use chairs!

Hey "5DmkII" capitalizes Nikon but not canon.....cool :)

I don't understand why they (manufacturers) keep putting video feature in DSLR'S, always issues. At least make the DSLR's with and without the video option side by side and see what sells, then take it from there.
