Nikon D300s movie recording issue (not confirmed)

I received this tip anonymously - I have no idea if the described issue is real or not (my D300s is still on order). Please take this with a grain of salt until we get some real reports from the field:

D300s movie recording issue
Apparently D300s has few issues with movie recording. below is a Q&A written by Nikon to distributors.

Q1: During movie shooting, recording stopped before the count down display reached “00m 00s.” Does this indicate damage or a defect?
A1:We will need to inspect your camera. Please contact an authorized Nikon service representative.

Q2:Why does this issue occur?
A2:Movies may not be recorded when external microphone is used and free space on the memory card is running low.

Q3:Is there anything that can be done to prevent this from occurring?
A3:Yes.
Nikon service representatives will make adjustments to your camera.

Q4:What adjustments have been made?
A4:The length of movie-recording time displayed before shooting has been adjusted.

Q5:What changes can be expected when adjustments are made?
A5:With same free space on a memory card, the length of movie-recording time may decrease after the adjustments.

Q6:Under what conditions does this issue occur?
A6:We have confirmed that it may occur when movies are recorded at a frame size of 320 X 216 with external microphone.

Can someone confirm if such warning was sent from Nikon to distributors?

    First!

Very interesting that Nikon would want to “inspect” the camera, as it would seem to me that this could be resolved with a firmware upgrade. If it were an issue in all movie modes, I would be more inclined to believe it was more than just firmware. It’s also possible that with the small sizes of 320×168 video files that the extra space taken up by whatever is causing the bloat is more noticeable.

      My bad… 320×216… don’t know where 168 came from.

  • http://nikond300slab.wordpress.com Lawrence Oei

My Nikon D300s did fine with that settings! No problem.

  • http://www.iamron.com Ron Adair

Well, it seems I’ll never run into this particular bug. 320×168? Is anyone really using that mode? What, are they recording for a 1996 vintage Nokia screen?

    • WoutK89

320×216 anyone? :-P how come there are already two people talking 320×168 hehe

      • http://fotograf-stuttgart.com Fotograf Stuttgart

you obviously wasnt on youtube for a long time :-D

        • WoutK89

ok, so youtube uses that dimension? But the article doesnt say anything about that setting, only the 320×216.

My bad. I was referencing the last comment, hence the mistake twice. Anyway, shoot the D300s in HD is the message. Like this vid, just posted:

  • LOL

hmm.. i dont know bout you guys, but i have a bug where it allowed me to choose 84×84 monochrome video, it felt just like i was playing “snakes” on the nokia 3310 :D

  • DNHJR

LOL! Like I’ve said before, video is best left to the HD camcorders and DSLRs for the Still’s.

    • Ronan

I’ll be sure to tell the videomakers currently comming out with movies for the big screen with video DSLR’s!

  • Human

So Canon introduced EOS 7D with video 1920 x 1080 (h.264) and choice of 30, 25 or 24 fps. That, what we ask Nikon already long time. But Nikon is deaf. And this EOS 7D will have almost the same price as Nikon D300s. So, Nikon sucks.

  • Tim Catchall

Sounds like nonsense – who is shooting 320×216??? The Vitali and Bosch videos were stunning.

  • NikoDoby

Well the new canon 7D supposedly has the same AF problems as the 1DmkIII so it evens out. (Not joking, info comes from Rob Galbraith himself, again)

      Rob Galbraith:

“Static autofocus was excellent, using Spot AF, various AF points, AI Servo (we almost never use One Shot) and a small batch of different lenses. With the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II, EF-S 15-85mm f/3.5-5.6 IS (also introduced today), EF 70-200mm f/4L IS, EF 200mm f/2L IS and EF 800mm f/5.6L IS, photos were simply in focus.”

  • Secret Source

My sources say Canon fans will get a surpise in a rumor forum, the top status you can reach will be a Nikon D4.

    • NikoDoby

JBL is this you? Ha Ha

  • 5D Mark II

Nikon suck big times! Come over to canon… We will treat you alot better :)

    • NikoDoby

Yes, just like your service center took care of the 1DmkIII’s auto focus :)

Oh and your workers can’t be happy when they spend the entire work day standing because canon won’t let them use chairs!

Hey “5DmkII” capitalizes Nikon but not canon…..cool :)

      • Jay

Yea cus you know nikon has great costumer service (rollseyes)… BTW TS Rob had a beta version while some of the new testers have a final production and state the af is just fine. Besides Ill think about this next time I shoot the d300 at 6fps at 12 bit and only get 2 keepers… all with 51 AF points ROFL.

        • Ronan

Yes they do, never had a single problem.

          A++ service with a smile.

    • Anonymous

Like mirror falling off the 5D and Canon wouldn’t claim responsibility until 2 years later. No thanks

    • Anonymous

Most Canon users are pathetic individuals, I’ll go with Pentax, or Sony first.

  • Shia

I don’t understand why they (manufacturers) keep putting video feature in DSLR’S, always issues. At least make the DSLR’s with and without the video option side by side and see what sells, then take it from there.

    • Ronan

If they are doing it, its for a reason. Its the current market trend/want.

    • Anonymous

I’m amazed by the amount of people who still ask this question… If you’re truly curious as to why this is being done, do a little research. Most video forums contain a DSLR section that will outline the advantages of shooting with a DSLR over a camcorder. My guess is that you don’t actually care. My guess is that you’ve run out of things to complain about but lack a replacement hobby.

  • 5D Mark II

are you nuts? welcome to the 2009, they will not make any dslr without videos for marketing purpose

    • NikoDoby

Sony’s DSLRs don’t have any video. Check to see how well they sell.

      • Ronan

I haven’t seen a Sony user in a long time. Especially not a pro.

Out of the most i see (in order), Canon, Nikon, Pentax, Olympus.

  • getanalogue

being completely unemotional, and a Nikon user for decades, i have to state that canon pushed nikon into a corner and nikon needs some big hits to get out of it. how are they intending to do this successfully without any skills in software development obviously lacking. i am wondering how nikon will meet the challenge – i am not the only one waiting for a d400, no need for a d300s video. Have a d90 and am currently happy, but would like to have a more rugged, weatherproof body with the possibility to shoot MF glass (Contax, Zeiss primes).

    • Anonymous

Yeah, the 7D must make Nikon at least a little bit nervous…

I hope Nikon releases something great in the not too distant future.

    • Tim Catchall

Well, calm down.. we are only on the first anniversary of the first ever video enabled DSLR (the D90, released on 5 September 2008). It is way too soon to judge who will come out on top in this game. Two years ago Canon looked to be asleep at the wheel, we are just seeing their answer to the D300 and D3 now. The 7D looks great, but it is introducing technology Nikon has had for a while: colour metering, integrated wireless flash, high-quality AF tracking etc. And it comes two years after the D300.

      • Anonymous

Nikon also introduced video first; however, their video seems to have sat still while Canon added 24/25/30fps at 1080p & 50/60fps at 720p. I hope Nikon develops a camera that can compete with this, but the d300s makes me wonder if they’re even capable…

  • Human

Hey guys, I was talking about Canon’s video mode, that Nikon sucks etc. But I have to say, for me Canon 7D is bullshit anyway because of it’s crazy f****g megapixels. I studied it’s full-size samples and this is lamentably. Canon goes to compact camera’s quality with big DOF. :) So I want to whip as Nikon as Canon.

  • 3space

    Please give us a D4 with 1080p @ 30,24 fps and 720 @ 60,50 fps… And a better codec…
