In fact that is what I was writing, As I said, a 50MP camera would be limited to ISO 800 and be pretty much a studio and very bright light camera.

All Nikon cameras achieve a specific noise performance critera at maximum ISO. So the noise on a D3 at max ISO is essentially the same as a D90 or a D50 or a D300 at their max ISO – give or take the fact that only whole stops are used.

You can always fix noise in software – at the cost of some resolution, but only if you actually need to.

Just think of Nissan, you don’t pronounce it Nigh-san.

Also, this will bring us to the situation on why PnS image usually suck, too much mp on such a small sensor.

Canon was very lucky that they managed to walk on that fine line when creating their 5D Mark II with that amount of megapixel, look what happened to their 50D? They tried to increase the MP and they screwed up BADLY.

I get rather tired of the folk who think that because they spent $2500 on a camera that Nikon should not dare to better it in the DX format. There are advantages to both formats in different applications.

If there is a use for a 24MP FX body there will be a use for a 24MP DX body. We can’t have a 50MP FX sensor until after the 24MP DX. Getting to 50MP is critical because that is the threshold point for fashion magazine photography. OK so a 50MP F-mount camera is probably going to have 800 ISO and be limited to the studio and bright sunny days. Well guess what? Those are the conditions in which 95% of ‘blad photographers work 95% of the time anyway.

The limiting factor at the moment is almost certainly the processor speed. More pixels requires more speed. But that will come. There are processors on the market today that can handle the throughput, just not in low power configurations you need for a usable camera.

Depending on what Nikon does, they could come up with a model to compete against the 5DmkII…which seems to be killing it in sales, largely due to the video feature.

I don’t think that Nikon P&S users will appreciate the OLED screen, but I bet we’ll also see that technology in the next gen of Nikon’s higher-end DSLRs. I’m surprised it didn’t appear there first.
