I am not sure I understand this DxO page. What does “Projected roadmap of future DxO Optics Correction Modules” mean? Another reader has emailed me with the same tip. Here is the link:

I would certainly want to buy it – if pennies allow. Have to find some sponsors for my cryptography course.

Looks like it might well be announced at the same time as the D400. I thought this might be the case when the 10-24 launched with the D5000. The 80-400 will be an FX lens of course, but its going to be a lot more special on the DX format as a compact 120-600 equivalent!

My guess is that it will cost about the same as a D400 to boot!

As for the launch date, there is a story to that lens. The designer died young, before the lens launched I believe. That is why the lens has a few quirks, the designer was not able to clear the changes after field testing so it shipped as is. So I would not be surprised if it comes out on the 10th anniversary.

Not too sure about the ‘list’ of lenses to come out. Nikon has been pretty aggressive of late. The 80-400 is certainly a higher priority for a revamp than the 70-200, I don’t think it likely two pro-zooms would come out back to back.

So if there is a whole slew of lenses I would suggest a stable of fast AFS primes is the most likely explanation. And I think we can expect that for every FX prime of 50mm or less that there is a DX variant with 2/3 the focal length and slightly lower f rating.

Nikon D700 AF VR Zoom NIKKOR 80-400mm f/4.5-5.6D ED Elite
It could be the old lens version, but I doubt it.

If this is ture, then this lens will sell like crazy. This would be the smartest thing Nikon could do so poeple would not go for the Sigma zooms. I’ll order it asap.

Just buried my good old Sigma 80-400. Still wondering what to get as a replacement.

Yersterday I was reading the swedish magazine called kamera och bild (Camera and Picture) and there was a small notice about the new nikon 10-24.

The interesting part was that during the event some nikon employee mentioned that there were several other ( a “Long list” as he said) lenses just waiting to be released!!!
they just need some final tweaking.

That’s why I find this rumor very possible to be true

maybe NikonRumors already heard this one, but I thought I’d say it anyway.. incase you missed.

I own the current 80-400 and overall it is a pretty darn nice lens. But I will consider buying the replacement if they improve the focus speed (AF-S _should_ do this, but we’ve seen that this is not always the case – 50mm f/1.4). The current tripod foot is so bad that I replaced it with a RRS collar and foot. Nikon should be ashamed to be making such a crappy foot. I’d vote that they make it match the removable foot on the 70-200. My RRS collar lets me use the same foot on either, and that means I only need one foot in my bag. Improve the sharpness at 400mm and you’d got a winner. VRII and nano coating would be icing on the cake for me.

BTW, I really like the confidence rating applied to rumors.

With a fast AF-S and a good VR, I’d be interested “again”, cause I’ve almost decided on eiter a Sigma or a 300 f/4 with a 1,7 converter (the fixed 300 f/4 is 200€ less). Can’t wait for more clues.. .

If this does get released the tripod collar and the focus speed will be the most closely scrutinized features of this lens.

It’s certainly plausible given the fact that Sigma has already replaced their competitor for the 80-400.
If it’s true I expect initial prize to be around that of a D300 body.

Considering the gap up to the next level above this, I would be willing to pay more for it if it has AF-S, ED glass (still, I know the current one does), VR II, and Nano, along with a better tripod foot (hopefully with built in Arca-Swiss mount).
