ok, I just discovered that steve-o, cloud9, Jeffster, Beezlebug, Bob, seadriver, cameraguy and few other names are the same person. One single person is responsible for 99% of the negative comments here. There is no reason for one person to disturb a whole community, especially since he/she does not even like the site. From that point on, I am considering those posts as spam.

I got the feedback I needed. This whole disturbance was caused by one person using multiple names. All comments are now closed - there is no reason to continue this madness just to make one person happy. Thanks for your feedback and support.

Hi
I see lots of comments.. it would be impossible to read them all consequently in the right way.. however let me tell you what I would do.

1) continue posting RUMORS as RUMORS (that is "magazine xxx has spotted a new lens OR on a yyyy forum someone talked about a zzz lens/body.. I'm sure you know what I mean)

2) open a SEPARATE section for links that might be interesting in the future (here you might let fall the Thom section, that is "Nice to know that Thom Hogan is working on a new mysterious book: let's hope to read it soon" OR also those latest 2nd hand rumors just to keep track of them). Of course this has less priority than #1. People must be aware that you post them not to lose them by the time, not because you're speculating on something.

3) forget all the rest. By the way, let me at least thank you for the great effort you do to keep all us informed of what's going on out there.

Ok, I'll say this slowly... the word "rumor" is in the name of the website. I'm an adult capable of critical thinking. It's not as though there is intentional deceit. Like, oh, remember the original website for whitehouse.com? Now that was misleading. Sadly, no longer the soft porn it used to be.

Your polls are not sufficient to describe the problem with your "intepretation" of Thom Hogans surprise book. It's not about whether you need to "verify" the rumors you publish here or not. But most rumors are based on someone saying "I spoke to a Nikon rep. the other day", or someone producing fake camera ads, or someone with inside connections actually leaking credible information that appears like rumors until verified.

But with the "book incident" YOU actually created the rumor yourself, based on a razor blade thin assumption that someone would actually write and publish a BOOK over a rumored camera/lens/whatever. That's different, and has, IMO, no place here. But you decide.

G'day Admin. Keep up the great work (and i understand that what you are doing does take work). You are doing a great job. I see your site as one for rumours, speculation, discussion points and stuff of interest to the world wide Nikon user community. I check it almost everyday. Personally, I see it as entertainment as well - something to read while I munch my lunch at my desk at work. If i want science (in order to understand and predict what is most likely to happen next), I will read science. I see no changes that are necessary on your site.

I am struck by how the many people who accuse you of wasting their time are actually wasting their own time by posting comments that are critical, but not at all helpful. I haven't read the entirety of most of them. I don't see the need to linger on every word of every post in an obsessional sort of way. I am grown up enough to make a choice about what I read. .

As for all those critical, bitter posters out there, I suggest you all relax a little and get outside more. Otherwise, you could set up your own blogs where other like-minded folks can chime in and you can all get bent out of shape together.

As others have said to you, Admin., it's your site. You do what you like. But please note that you have my support and clearly have the support of many others.

Once again: Good work Admin. and thanks you to you.

I must say I had a chuckle reading this saga.

NR, I enjoy the site just as it is. Cheers

I think that Thom did raise some valid points, certainly worthy of thought. However nobody has asked the question of whether this site is a business or a hobby for the admin. If it is a pure business for the admin and the goal is to make as much money as possible, then the selective filtering idea may be a good one: let every user set a cookie determining what level of rumor they get. For example 1=news with press release,2=rumor with multiple independent sources,3=plausible rumor, only two sources,4=less plausible rumor, single source stuff etc. And have a separate option to include or exclude reviews/humor etc.

However, it sounds to me like he's running it as a hobby that happens to generate a little cash - and there's nothing at all wrong with that. Who are we to say how he should express himself on the Web? This site is free after all, I am sure the admin will happily give annoyed readers a full refund... If readers don't like this site then they should go elsewhere - and if there's nowhere else they can start their own site!

I for one continue to enjoy this site and don't mind wading through a bit of rubbish. I come from a media background and can tell you instantly that the site is flawed in many ways. But the whole point of the Web is that anyone can express themselves how they see fit. Yes, that results in hideously irritating ephemera like Twitter, and contributes to the decline of the English language etc. The saving grace is that occasionally something honest and interesting like this site comes along.
