Haha you guys are too much.
No service program = complaints about no service.
Offer a service program = complaints they don't do more/complaints about not needed.

What would you like? Nikon to offer free D3's to everyone?

no because then people would complain -- why not D3X's instead.

too much ....

To me, this is a very good sigh. It shows that Nikon is making an effort to improve their support for those who make a living with these tools. Sure, it seems silly to some at first glance, but if you read between the lines, what you get is the ability to send your camera in for cleaning/tuning/adjustment and (important) a chance for a Nikon tech to look at your camera and take note of what has worn. Knowing Nikon, I bet they go beyond what they say they'll do and take care of little things like a small rubber part that is coming lose. Big companies are usually better off under promising and over delivering. Given the oil-on-the-sensor issue that some D3 users have had, this is welcome news.

I'll keep cleaning my own sensor and updating firmware, thank you. But it is nice to see Nikon improving support.

Wow you really don't get it do you Jason? Being a pro does not mean you are super human and can do everything. Where do you draw the line with "knowing your tools"???... does it stop at camera settings? sensor cleanings or the ability to build your own camera? your post is arrogant and ignorant really...

no such thing of "pros" or "professionals" because they're just working photographers. i doubt working photographers will give a damn if nikon offers free cleaning and checkup because they won't have time to do that.

Could be they are trying to distinguish the D3X from an imminent 700X. This free perc might be seen as something that separates it from the identical 700X.

Pros should know their tools.

Ridiculous a pro can't clean a sensor in 2009. Almost irresponsible.

Or because they are professional photographers for whom a level of service is important from their camera manufacturer, and who rely on their kit to make a living, and where preventative maintenance, and continued calibration is a necessity to deliver commercial images.

Contrast this to Canon who don't offer this service to their customers unless they opt for a high level of PAID pro support.

it's because 99% of D3 and D3X owners are gearheads, they are too scared to screw up their cameras by simple sensor cleaning, firmware updating, and quit looking at pictures at 100% magnification to count pixels.

I've witnessed the "Sensor Cleanings" Nikon and Canon perform here in Canada... I think I'd almost prefer my dog licked the sensor clean.

Firmware updates? You own a D3/D3X and can't update some firmware!? (assuming they mean they'll do it.)

Pixel Mapping included as "routine"?

Pretty silly stuff.

seems to me that d90 price has gone up in germany by about 30euros since d5000 was announced. it was easy to get it for round 735 two weeks ago, now its easy to get at around 765.
