Pity that there is no Commander mode on flash for wireless lighting. Bearing in mind that this camera sits between the D60 and the D90 the recommended price is high, but if the wireless flash function had been added Canon would have been blown out of the water.

t1i is 1080p at 20p, which isn't a realistic framerate standard, even 24 is off a tad (24 is for film and unless your tv can run at 24 you can see juttering during pan shots, 25 and 50 is native rates for european tv, and 30/60 is for u.s. tv's), so 1080 at 20 frames is kind of pointless to me, 720 at 24p is still nice though :)
I read on dpreview that it is 5 minutes top recording, I hope that is simply a misread...

I said $150 because the first figure for MSRP I saw for the d5000 was $750 and I paid $900 for my d90. If you pre-order, you're stuck paying MSRP. The d90 has been around long enough that it's in stock and ready for purchase, and it's not selling at MSRP. You can order a d90 body from J&R through Amazon today for $889+$0 s/h, and the MSRP on the d5000 is now $730. Obviously the d5000 is already driving the price of the d90 down. Once they are both reasonably available, I suspect you'll see the d90 will continue to be priced even if not above the d5000.

If you need a camera today, you can buy a d90. You can't shoot with a d5000 today. That's a big selling point for the d90 at the moment. That'll give it a premium for at least the next two months.

MSRP to MSRP is not apples to apples in this case. If the cameras were released today at those MSRPs, you'd have a good argument that Nikon was doing something very stupid. Fact is the d90 was announced almost a year ago and these cameras are not exactly contemporary.

My comparison was apples to apples, which is the price right now. I'll admit I was mistaken and both cameras are priced lower now. The spread is $160 now. Still far below what you're saying.

Given a choice between the d50 and d40, I'd pick the d50. Maybe I'm not every consumer, but the screw drive is a huge amount of value, since there's a whole back catalogue of lenses that won't AF on the 40/60/5000.

Apples to Apples isn't MSRP. Few people pay MSRP so it's meaningless. The only time I mention MSRP is when people are arguing that it's too high. MSRP is generally pretty consistent from gen to gen, factoring in inflation. Other than that, MSRP is not what the majority of consumers pay. It never was, and the internet has seen that trend increase, especially with sites like Amazon.

1. There is no relationship between the 10-24mm lens and the D5000 body other than the fact that they were released on the same day. The kit version of the D5000 comes with the usual 18-55mm VR. Note that Nikon used to release a new kit lens for each new body. (D70=18-70, D80=18-135, D90=18-105, D200=18-200, D700=24-120, Early D40 =18-55 (non VR), Later D40 and D60=18-55 VR), but the last few low-end models are all using the 18-55 VR.

2. The D5000 estimated selling price in the U.S. is $730 (body only). When the D60 body only was still available, the last selling price was $630. So this is only $100 more and it has video, higher resolution, swinging LCD, etc. I don't understand what all the complaining is about.

3. Although I expected the 10-24mm to be the same price as the 12-24, I don't understand why Nikon bothered to release this lens to get 2 more mm of view (but a half a stop slower speed at the far end). There are so many other lenses that were needed first. What were they thinking?

4. There's another lens coming that's been planned for some time. Some months back, I posted the sequence of model #s used in the U.S. and noted that a few were missing. This was one of them (2181). 2180 was the 50mm 1.4G AF-S. 2183 is the 35mm DX. 2182 will be the next lens.

For the interested, canadian MSRP for D5000 kits (from nikon.ca):
D5000 kit with DX 18~55 VR: 1,059.95 CAD
D5000 kit with DX 18~105 VR: 1,249.95 CAD
No word on body only.
Price pretty much bang on the USD-CAD exchange rate.

This is a disappointing announcement. It's clearly going to cannibalize many D90 sales, and Nikon has to realize that. The disappointment for me is that I need to purchase two low-end models -- one for personal use and one for work, and I expected a D40 replacement at PMA. When it didn't happen, I held out until now based on the rumor about this model. Now I'm going to have to look to Canon, Sony or Olympus for a low-end model with live view and more than 6 mp.

Micah: compare apples to apples dude. The msrp on the d90 is $999. D5000 is $729. That's $270, not $150. As I said, features are very close on these two cameras yet the d5k is more than 25% less. Nikon has just taken away most of the D90's market, it will languish and be discontinued just like the D50. Remember that camera? It had all the same advantages over the D40 the D90 has and it became virttually worthless overnight when the D40 was released.

The only thing I really find encouraging from this body is the screen rotation technology which will hopefully expand into future FX models. Especially the ability to rotate it inwards and protect it! They now need to get the pixels up to 920,000 from 230,000.

I also wonder about the airflow control and whether it seems to make a difference or not.

But with no in-body focus, .78 mag and 720p @ 24fps to me makes this camera another one that will fall into line with the other releases and not make too big a splash.

Agree! This camera has actually a bit of a shame... I was expecting something useful for pro and semi-pro snappers. Been nothing since the D700.

Canon's 1080p @ 20 fps is utterly useless. It's a marketing gimmick and nothing more. It's shameful, really. Plus Canon's T1i has an inferior AF. It does have the D5000 beat on LCD resolution though. I understand the 2.5" screen to give a little extra room for the swivel mechanism, but I haven't seen such a low resolution screen since... my beloved D200.

Did you pay $900 for it? You got higher resolution, two exposure control dials, an AF motor, a slightly faster frame rate, a bigger battery, better view finder, a vertical grip option--need I go on? You got this for $150 premium over a camera that you can't have in hand for another month at least.

I have a d90. It's a great camera. I take it out of the house more often than the D300. Compact, fast, great IQ. It will take great pictures right now if you use it right.

Did you want a d60? That's what the new camera replaces. The d90 is superior to this camera in almost every way. Sure your d90 won't be worth what you paid in a couple months. That's just the nature of the market for dslr bodies.

You got this for $150 premium over a camera that you can’t have in hand for another month at least.

I have a d90. It’s a great camera. I take it out of the house more often than the D300. Compact, fast, great IQ. It will take great pictures right now if you use it right.

Did you want a d60? That’s what the new camera replaces. The d90 is superior to this camera in almost every way. Sure your d90 won’t be worth what you paid in a couple months. That’s just the nature of the market for dslr bodies.

MSRP on a d90 body is 999.95

Do you pay MSRP? I rarely do. These will be selling for $600 body only by xmas if Nikon can keep up with demand.

$899 seems awfully expensive for a lens aimed a consumer level photographers. it is the same price as the 12-24; so why would anyone pick this lens over that one?
